15 kills, the Dragons defeated St. Cloud State in three straight sets. MSUM took the sets from the Huskies 25-20, 25-20, and 30-28. In addition to Gruber’s big night, senior Sam Sullivan posted a season-high 25 assists in the victory. The Dragons trailed 10-9 in the first set before the Dragons made four runs of three consecutive points to take control of the set and win 25-20. The Huskies led again in the second set 4-1 before the Dragons scored four straight to take the lead and went on to take the set 25-20. The third set was tightly contested and went well beyond 25 while both teams traded points back-and-forth. Gruber put away the final two points of the set on kills to take the set 30-28.

Next, on Saturday the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, Minnesota Duluth visited Moorhead and beat the Dragons in four sets. The Dragons came out strong and took the first set 25-17 before UMD regrouped and won the next three sets 25-13, 25-19, and 25-19. Junior Kaitlin VanWinkle led the way fro the Dragons with 13 kills while hitting .345 on 29 attack attempts. Junior Casie Baer contributed 22 assists in the match. MSUM utilized a six-point stretch in the first set to lead 15-9 and held onto the lead in the first set 25-17. The Bulldogs came out looking for revenge in the second set, taking a 13-2 lead early before taking the set 25-13. UMD used that momentum to take the next two sets as well and the match in four sets.

VanWinkle Closing in on Another Milestone2014 has been VanWinkle’s best season as a Dragon so far and she is closing in on another milestone to add to her already impressive career. VanWinkle, who is already ninth in block assists in Dragon history, is two solo blocks away from being added to the top-10 in Dragon history in her second category. She currently has 57; number 10 on the list for the Dragons is Lisa Jorgenson (1985-86) who had 59. Third place in solo blocks is not out-of-reach for VanWinkle. She needs 25 more to tie for third place at 83. Right now, she is averaging 19 solo blocks a season and has 21 in 2014. With five matches left in the year and all of 2015 left, another year like ‘14 and VanWinkle will reach that mark.

Senior Shine in Win over HuskiesMSUM has only two seniors this year, Maggie Gruber and Sam Sullivan. Those two led the Dragons in the victory over St. Cloud State on Friday night. Gruber led all players with 15 kills in the match, including scoring the last two points of the third set to clinch the victory for the Dragons. Gruber hit .259 in the match on 27 attack attempts. Sullivan posted a season-high 25 assists and added two service aces, both highs for the team.

Last Week’s MSUM HighlightsKaitlin VanWinkle (MB, 5-11, Jr., Farmington, Minn./ Lakeville South HS) led the Dragons in kills for the week with 23 over two matches. VanWinkle averaged 3.28 kills per set during the week, and hit .250 in 60 attack attempts over the week. She also posted seven total blocks in the two matches. COACHING STAFFAssistant Coaches: ....................Katy Peterson................................................Natalie Thomas Strength/Conditioning Coach: Travis Anderson

The winningest coach in Minnesota State University Moorhead history, Tammy Blake is in her 20th season as the Dragon head volleyball coach in 2014.

In 19 previous seasons, Blake is 332-252, and has led the Dragons to winning records 12 times. She enters the 2014 as the longest-tenured coach in the NSIC.

During her run, MSU Moorhead advanced to the NCAA Division II Re-gional tournament play in 2000, 2004 and 2005 and claimed a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion-ship in 2000. She is the only coach to marshal the Dragons to the NCAA Division II post-season playoffs. Blake became the first and lone MSUM head coach to reach the 300-win plateau in 2011.

In 2012, MSUM earned two wins over nationally-ranked foes (Eckerd and Rol-lins) on its way to a 17-12 mark. Playing in arguably the toughest Division II conference in the nation (NSIC), the Dragons finished with a 9-11 mark in conference play. MSUM opened the year 9-1 and finished the season with a five-match winning streak.

Senior Katy Ness had an outstanding senior season in 2012, earning Dak-tronics First-Team All-American honors. Ness was the Northern Sun Conference Libero of the Year after leading the con-ference this season with 6.31 digs per set, ranking sixth in NCAA Division II. Ness finished her career Dragon career with 2,164 digs.

The crowning jewel of her stay at MSUM was a remarkable 28-4 finish in 2000 that included a school record 17-match win streak, the return of the NSIC title to MSU Moorhead and a first ever appearance at the NCAA Division II North Central Regional Championships. It also earned Blake Regional Coach of the Year honors.

Blake was appointed the fifth head volleyball coach in Dragon history in 1995 replacing Becky Schulze. She joined MSUM after four years as head coach at Vermillion High School in Vermil-lion, S.D. Her 1992-93 edition placed 11th on the final South Dakota High School poll.

She faced a major challenge in her first season at MSUM, including the upgrade from the NAIA to the powerful NCAA Division II, but Blake and the rebuilt Dragons posted a second place finish in the NSIC, the first of three straight league runner-up finishes. Blake directed a Division II-leading defense in 2011 while averaging 19.88 digs per game.

A 1989 graduate of the University of South Dakota, Blake was installed as the Coyotes’ starting setter midway through her freshman year. A four-time letterwinner, she led the North Central Conference in serve aces as a junior and was elected captain as a senior.

Blake graduated from USD with a major in Physical Education/Health. Following her career at South Dakota, she spent two seasons at South Dakota State University as an assistant coach in volleyball and softball and earned a Master’s Degree.

A native of Sgt. Bluff, Iowa, Blake graduated from Sgt. Bluff-Luton High School in 1984. A four-sport letterwinner, she was a three-year regular in volleyball at outside hitter. A two-time Iowa All-State and a three-time All-War Eagle Conference selection, Blake was voted Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior.
