About the MatchupThe Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team (4-0) will play host to Valley City State on Tuesday night at Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM and Valley City State will meet for a 98th time, with the Dragons holding a 61-36 series lead. MSUM won 80-65 last year at Alex Nemzek Hall.

MSU Moorhead DragonsThe Dragons improved their record to 4-0 with a 70-57 win over neighboring rival Concordia-Moorhead on Nov. 20. Senior Anthony Tucker led the Dragons with 24 points, while senior forward Alex Novak added 14 and sophomore guard Jordan Riewer added 11.

Tucker leads the Dragons at 22.0 points per game, while Novak is at 13.5. Novak leads at 7.5 rebounds, while Tucker leads with 20 assists. Tucker is shooting 60 percent from the field and from three-point range (12-of-20) while Novak is shooting 66.7 percent from the field. Riewer leads with six steals, while Novak leads with four blocks.

Valley City State VikingsValley City State is 5-2 on the season. The Vikings split a pair of games last weekend in Dickinson, N.D., falling to Rocky Mountain College, 83-78 but beat Dickinson State, 79-65.

Sekani Milligen leads VCSU at 19.1 points per game, followed by A.J. McDonald at 13.7 and Gus Kueber at 13.

Jeff Kaminsky is in his eighth season as the VCSU head coach with a record of 117-96 at the school.

COACHING BIO

Chad Walthall is in his third season as the head men’s basketball coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead. The veteran coach, known for his ability to rebuild collegiate programs, took over the Dragon program in May 2010, and has proven to be up to the task of bringing the MSUM program back to prominence.

Walthall guided MSUM to a 21-10 mark and led the Dragons to their first NCAA Tournament since 1965. It also marked the Dragons’ first NCAA Tournament bid since moving to NCAA Division II from NAIA. Not only did MSUM advance to the NCAA Tournament, but they also earned a first-round win, an 82-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State.

In Walthall’s first season, he proved he was more than capable of rebuilding the Dragon basketball program. The Dragons were selected 11th in the preseason coach’s poll for the 2010-2011 season. Walthall led the team to a sixth-place finish and earned a bid in the NSIC postseason tournament just one year after finishing 12th in league play.

Prior to arriving at MSUM, Walthall was an assistant coach at Iowa of the Big Ten from 2007-10. While on the Hawkeye coaching staff, he assisted in recruiting Iowa’s 2010 recruiting class which was ranked 20th in the nation and third in the Big Ten, by Van Coleman. Walthall also served as interim Head Coach for the Hawkeyes for four games, while Head Coach Todd Lickliter (2007 NABC Coach of Year) was sidelined due to health reasons.

Walthall’s head coaching experience has a history of rebuilding basketball programs. In 2000 he was hired as Head Basketball Coach at Loras College. He served seven seasons (2000-07) becoming the third winningest coach in school history. He also served as Director of Athletics from 2004-07.

Walthall was named 2006-07 Iowa Intercollegiate Conference (IIAC) Coach of the Year while leading the Duhawks to a 15-1 conference record and the IIAC title. It was the first IIAC title for Loras since the 1950-51 season and its most conference wins in school history. Along with achieving regular season success, Walthall led Loras to its first IIAC tournament title and first NCAA tournament berth in school history. His seven-year mark at Loras was 116-69.

Walthall led Loras to winning seasons in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in each of his seven seasons. In his last three years, Loras won 77 percent (37-11) of its league games, more than any other basketball program in the IIAC. In his final two seasons, Loras posted a 22-3 home record, including 11-game winning streaks in both 2005-06 and 2006-07.

COACHING RESUME• Chad Walthall was named Head Coach in May of 2010, becoming the 13th Men’s Basketball Coach in the 46 year history of the program. 2012-13 is his 25th year in coaching and the 23rd at the collegiate level.• Walthall spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa prior to arriving at MSUM.• Spent seven season as head coach for Loras College.• Served as assistant coach at Eastern Michigan for two years and St. Olaf for four.• Graduate Assistant at St. Cloud State for two years.
