    Winter Olympic medallist Lydia Lassila (pictured) has unveiled a new library collection at Diggers Rest Community Centre.

    Lassila read to primary school pupils as part of yesterdays launch of the Melton library outpost service.

    Diggers Rest Primary School principal Rachelle Hedger said the outpost was a welcome addition .

    We know the importance of reading to our students and to the community as a whole, so were very excited for this to begin.

    e collection includes more than 300 books, magazines, DVDs and audio books for children and adults.

    Residents can access the outpost every Tuesday from 9.30-11.30am and ursday from 2.30-4.30pm.

    Library sta will be on hand to answer queries. Items in the collection will change on a monthly basis.

    Melton mayor Bob Turner said the service was about providing better access for more Melton residents who may not have otherwise accessed the library. \ PM

    Long-awaited plans to improve tra c woes in Bacchus Marsh will go on show this week.

    VicRoads will display maps and models of works proposed for Halletts Way at two public information sessions.

    e revised plans, including upgrades to Woolpack and Hopetoun Park roads and an exit ramp from the Western Freeway to Bacchus Marsh Road, were announced by Roads Minister Terry Mulder in March

    following years of controversy and debate. Previous plans for a truck bypass were rejected by Planning Minister Matthew Guy in 2012 a er a vocal campaign by the Avenue of Honour Preservation Group.

    e plans would have required removal of eight elm trees on the Avenue of Honour.

    VicRoads project director Trevor Boyd said he hoped the community would support the new plans, given the breadth of

    works and bene ts they will deliver. e package of works will improve tra c ow

    and road safety in Bacchus Marsh while maintaining the integrity of the Avenue of Honour .

    e session is an opportunity for community members to speak one-on-one with project sta

    involved in planning the works. Honour for All, a group pushing

    for a second Avenue of Honour, has welcomed the works, but said more changes

    were needed . e Halletts Way ramps will assist with the tra c situation at the Gisborne Road exit, but it wont have much e ect on the centre of town, spokesman Malcolm Trask said. e group also wants more north-south crossings in the town.

    Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the revised plans looked promising .

    e meetings are at the Lerderderg library from 3-5pm on Friday and 11am-1pm on Saturday. \

    it left Moorabool teens with absolutely nowhere to turn.

    The program matched 16 children with mentors in areas including the Moorabool, Pyrenees and Hepburn shires. It was funded by Highlands LLEN, which was no longer able to provide the $80,000 needed annually to keep the program afloat.

    Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the document provided a context to quickly explain the communitys needs and expectations, and put growth challenges in sharp focus. Moorabool is popular as a place to live, work and invest, so we need to make the state and federal governments aware of our needs and build strong partnerships to ensure these projects can be delivered, Cr Tatchell said.

    The councils position on wind farms, coal mining, agriculture and the Moorabool River are also detailed in the document.

    Dr Strangio said the council should also be pushing for improvements to local hospitals. Maternity numbers have essentially tripled in the past six years. Were up to 1100 births per year and this will only continue to increase so it makes sense that funding should, too.

    Moorabools top seven priority projects for which the council will seek government funding have been met with residents approval.

    Moorabool council has fine-tuned and formalised its advocacy document in the lead-up to Novembers state election.

    The Moorabool shire councils Key Priority Projects document lists the Halletts Way project, an eastern transport and freight bypass for Bacchus Marsh and sewerage for small towns among its vital needs.

    Bacchus Marsh resident Damien Strangio said the traffic solution projects should be strongly promoted by the council.

    The Western District Barbell Club is celebrating a rich haul of gold, silver and bronze.

    The club, which recently sent five of its members to the International Powerlifting Federations world championships in Johannesburg, has much to celebrate after its competitors brought home nine medals, three world records and one world champion.

    Tamara Navarro, Kerri-Anne Cauchi and Stephen Pritchard, Andrew Tang and John Paul Cauchi made the cut for South Africa after achieving A-grade, or elite II, standard at national level.

    John Paul was named junior world 66-kilo- gram champion after scoring three gold medals and breaking the deadlift open-age record.

    Pritchard, 42, broke two masters world records, while Kerri-Anne scored one silver and two bronze medals and a world ranking of three in the 52-kilogram sub-junior category.

    Navarro won a silver in the 57-kilogram junior squat event. Tang was disqualified after missing all three deadlifts. The five lifters were part of a team of 30 Australians.

    Powerlifting requires three attempts at hoisting weights in three lifts: squat, bench press and deadlift. The Western District Barbell Club, which trains at CrossFit Rise Up in Sunshine, has been running for the past year.

    As Mayor, I have many important responsibilities, not least of which is to advocate to all levels of government for the development of infrastructure and improved services for our community.

    Last week, I did just that. I attended the National General Assembly of Local Government conference and met with senior Federal Government representatives where we discussed key issues affecting our municipality including unemployment and

    universal kindergarten funding. Advocacy is a key role of local government, and Melton City Council will continue to represent the needs of our community in the areas of health, transport and education at a State and Federal level.

    While on the subject of community wellbeing, this week Ill have the pleasure of launching Councils Municipal Early Years Plan, a strategy that oversees the wellbeing of our youngest constituents. The plan focuses importance of partnerships and collaboration in achieving the best results for local families. This is a key document in determining how Council will plan and deliver services, programs and facilities for children now and well into the future.

    Speaking of our youngest constituents, Council is about to launch yet another innovative and unique initiative targeting kids, the Healthy Children Growing Together project. Funded by Medicare Local, this project will raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and healthy eating in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This is an extremely worthwhile project, so I encourage anyone whos interested to visit our website
