    A Proud Community Growing Together

Melton City Council Community NewsMOVING AHEAD

Being a Councillor in one of the fastest growing areas in Australia presents a number of great opportunities and challenges.

As a Council, we work tirelessly to plan for and deliver the necessary infrastructure, facilities and services needed to support our residents now and into the future.

An important part of this is planning for leisure and recreation facilities, including aquatic facilities.

I am thrilled to be able to share with residents that Council recently endorsed the Melton City Council Aquatic Plan 2014-2034. This was one of my election promises and to see the plan adopted by Council is extremely rewarding.

will investigate options to purchase a site for the development of a district or regional level Aquatic and Leisure Centre in the Plumpton area and a project to design and construct the new facility will be included in the 2017/2018 Capital Works Program for funding consideration.

The plan also recommends that Melton Waves Leisure Centre be redeveloped with Council to consider this project for funding

Also, subject to growth in population, Council will plan for a third smaller aquatic centre to be established in the Rockbank North area post 2025.

This is an absolutely fantastic outcome and I would like to thank Councillors at the Council Meeting on 23 September for their unanimous support on this very important strategic document.

I always welcome comments or feedback from residents who wish to contact me regarding any Council related matters. I can be contacted via email at [email protected] or on 0412 584 058.

The City of Meltons community spirit is one of our communitys greatest strengths. And, a time when this quality is always at its best is during our annual Community Safety Month

    celebrations held throughout October.

Council, along with project partners Woodgrove Shopping Centre, CFA, Victoria Police, SES, Bunnings, Police Historical Society and the Lions Club, will be hosting its annual A Good Month for Safety family event at Woodgrove Shopping Centre on Saturday 4 October.

Activities will run from 11am to 3pm in the High Street car park emergency service teams, free road and community safety resources and giveaways, a free sausage sizzle and free activities for families including an animal farm, jumping castles, face painting, magician and the live Snoopy and Friends Show.

Further activities during Community Safety Month include a free classes, and a community road safety forum. For more details on these events visit Councils website www.melton.vic.gov.au

I believe that personal and community safety should be high on everyones priority list. The events that Council is running during be more aware of the safety issues that surround them, and empower them to take charge and create a safe community for all.

On behalf of Council, I would like to thank everyone involved in the planning and preparation of Community Safety Month, in particular our project partners for their tireless efforts, I look forward to what should be a fun and successful event.

I am available to meet with residents most Saturday mornings from 9am, by appointment. Please contact Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200 to book a time, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or via email at [email protected]

Paul Kelly knows all about the struggles of keeping a small business afloat while chain- store companies move in.

The Bacchus Marsh resident has been operating Satellite City Furniture & Bedding in Melton for 23 years and has witnessed a decrease in shoppers.

But Mr Kelly said shopping locally offered all sorts of benefits to the community.

By shopping at a small business, youll be helping a family and keeping employment local, he said. Well get everything people are after if they come to us.

Mr Kelly has furnished thousands of homes in the past two decades, sponsored local sports clubs, provided free delivery and assembled furniture for the elderly.

But his efforts can be overshadowed by stores stocking cheaper and lesser-quality products.

Earlier this month, Melton council launched its Venture Melton campaign to highlight the advantages of supporting local businesses.

The campaign showcases business opportunities in Melton by providing information on the citys infrastructure, employment profile, economy and lifestyle.

Council economic development and advocacy acting manager Tennille Bradley said the council was focused on attracting businesses to the municipality and supporting existing businesses.

The Venture Melton program allows council to highlight the comparative advantages of doing business here, Ms Bradley said.

Small Business Day is on Saturday, October 4.

The city of Melton is set to become greener, with the council adopting a Greening the West strategy to oversee the establishment of greener spaces.

The project involves 19 partners including councils, VicRoads, Parks Victoria, Western Water, Melbourne Water and the Environment Department and will focus on improving the health and wellbeing of residents, the environment and economy.

Melton councils acting leisure and facilities manager, Glenn Mulcahy, said Greening the West would provide support when the council applied for grants for green projects.

Council has allocated substantial funding in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 financial years to the improvement of streets and reserves, he said.

Greening the West aims to enhance the environment in the region through the planting of more trees in streets and reserves.

Mr Mulcahy said there was research linking community health to access to quality green space.

A survey done in Melton two years ago showed 86 per cent of residents said they were willing to lend a hand by looking after trees planted in front of their properties.

The Water and Carbon Group has been appointed by the partners to undertake the consultation and development of the plan. There is no cost to the council.

A measly $115 stripped Alan Manly of his life savings, his time and his emotional well-being.

About 20 years ago, Mr Manly, originally from Bacchus Marsh, became involved with a fraudster, and a $115 invoice from the man for photocopying ended up in long-running legal action.

Ten years and many court cases later, Mr Manly finally walked away from the man who had tied down him and his family.

End of the nightmare His book, When there are too many lawyers,

there is no justice, tells the story of his life, which, he said, was virtually a smoking ruin.

Writing the book was a fulfilling, cathartic journey, Mr Manly said. After nine drafts and each draft I read three times I finally stopped crying.

After paying more than $100,000 to lawyers, Mr Manly finally decided to represent himself in court. The now-Sydney resident was lucky enough to survive with his marriage intact, but he discourages others from following the path

he took. Would I recommend it? I wouldnt recommend representing yourself, he said.

Mine wasnt a story of principle. I was trapped by a person who wouldnt get

out of my life, even though I wanted to get rid of him.

Mr Manly dropped out of Bacchus Marsh High School, now known as Bacchus Marsh College, in year 9 before working as a postman, television repairman, computer engineer, sales and marketing assistant. He now works in the education sector.

An initiative that led to mental health clinicians joining forces with police to respond to mental health call-outs is to get a funding boost.

The Mid-West Police and Clinician Emergency Response (PACER) initiative a partnership of Western Health, Brimbank and Melton police, Macedon Ranges and North Western Melbourne Medicare Local, NorthWestern Mental Health, Melbourne Health and Ambulance Victoria will share in $2.729 million of state government funding. The program, launched last month, allows police to call on the PACER unit when responding to any situation where someone is experiencing a mental health crisis. It will also link patients to relevant support services.

State Health Minister Mary Wooldridge said the extra funding would deliver a more targeted and timely response to patients needing urgent medical health support and reduce pressure on police, ambulances and emergency departments.

These initiatives will ensure that people with a mental illness receive the most appropriate and least restrictive care in a timely manner, she said.

Western Health is one of 12 mental health services to get the funding, which is part of a $15.1 million state government promise to roll out a mental health and police response program across Victoria over the next four years.

Bacchus Marsh Primary School pupils proved last week that young people can make a difference in the community.

Since the start of the year, grade 3 pupils have been putting together a special artwork to be shared with the towns residents.

It was an important project for the students because their aim was to prove young people can make a difference in the community, teacher Vanessa Buccheri said.

The pupils brainstormed ideas and worked with students from other years to decide on the best community project.

They created an online survey and 160 parents voted for their favourite idea.

Those ideas included creating a community garden or public mural, sharing activities with senior citizens, and raising money for an animal shelter.

The final choice was to paint a mural. The work began in term two when pupils wrote to

V/line about their project and began collecting donations to get it started. And after months of planning and work, the mural was officially unveiled at Bacchus Marsh railway station last week.

It takes pride of place on a signal box, where it is seen by commuters at the station and by passengers passing through.

The mural is one of a kind, Ms Buccheri said. Its bright, eye-catching and an asset to the station.

V/Line regional manager Peter Gibson said the students deserved a pat on the back for their hard work. Its wonderful to see young people showing an appreciation for their station.

The students each received a certificate of appreciation from V/Line for their efforts, while a plaque nearby acknowledges the school and its pupils.

Self-confessed craftaholics Terri McLeod and Kat Back have been overwhelmed by the support locals have given their little Melton store, Im A Craftaholic.

The duo have been dabbling in arts and crafts for as long as they can remember, but it was only six months ago they decided to set up shop to sell their gems.

Ms McLeod and Ms Back will be holding workshops at one of the nations most-loved travelling craft shows, The Stitches and Craft Show, at Caulfield racecourse in late October.

Were trying to capture the kids imagination at these workshops and we want parents to realise how easy it is for kids to be creative, Ms McLeod said. Children need a creative outlet and parents need to encourage their children to explore what they can do.

Ms McLeod says she wants people to give a stitch this Christmas by making stuffed toys.

Were asking people to donate the first toy they make to the Kmart wishing tree, she said.

We want something we can all unite in because we deal with ladies all over Australia.

    For more information, visit www.imacraftaholic.com

The Stitches and Craft Show is 10am-4.30pm, from Thursday, October 23 to Sunday, October 26 at Caulfield racecourse, gate 22/Station Street, Caulfield East.

Tickets cost from $9. For more details, visit www.craftevents.com.au

If a house without pretensions, able to take the dings and knocks of family life, strikes all the right notes, this one is a cracker. And surrounding land of about 8895 square metres for the kids to kick up the dirt riding mini-bikes with no harm done is another huge drawcard thats if it doesnt wind up being subdivided, subject to council approval.

The homestead-style house has a thoroughly homey soul right now, but has loads of potential for a fresh look. It has the good bones of exposed bricks, multi-paned windows, dado walls and a layout that works well for a family.

Beyond a bullnosed verandah, the entry hall with floorboards has, to the left, bifold doors to the main bedroom. A dado

rail bisecting two-tone paintwork in latte and grey adds character, and theres a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with walk-in shower and timber vanity unit. Three more bedrooms are down a slate-tiled hallway, each with robes and one decked out in pretty pink. They wrap around a childrens lounge with back verandah access. The main bathroom with a corner spa and timber vanity unit is nearby, as are a separate toilet and laundry with closet.

To the right of entry, an archway ushers in the step-down lounge room with a fireplace flanked by bay windows, and a brick bar. This room flows into the rumpus room with a split-system, beyond which is the kitchen the room with the most soul. Next to a meals area, it has blackwood cabinetry

including leadlight overheads, a brick splashback, concealed microwave nook, a pot rack above a breakfast bar, Technika dishwasher, stainless-steel underbench oven and a 900mm gas cooktop under a copper rangehood.

With entry under a double carport at the front and another door from the back verandah, an attached three-room space (with split-system) works as a home business pad or even a teen retreat.

Out back, theres a gable-roofed pergola housing a barbecue, and a large, fenced yard. Beyond is a huge land area with a large shed with concrete floor, power and a mezzanine storage loft.
