Calendar cash a pet subject

Moorabool residents will bene�t from a major increase in home and community care this year.

A boost in funding from the health department will allow the council to extend employment of a Djerriwarrh Health Services occupational therapist from two to three days a week. �e increase will help reduce the waiting list for clients.

Council living-at-home assessment o�cers will also sit one day a week with an occupational therapist at Ballan District Health and Care to determine eligibility for home and community care in the shire’s western end.

Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford said if community needs increased, the council would look to extend these “sittings” to two days a week.

Last year, Moorabool Shire’s Home and Community Care (HACC) service delivery increased by more than 900 hours and, with the introduction of new programs, was recognised and rewarded by the federal Department of Health.

�e HACC program provides community-based care services to eligible frail-aged, and younger people with disabilities and their carers, enabling them to live independently in their home and community.

Mr Croxford said the latest li� in funding would mean clients would no longer have to wait for up to 12 months for the home visit-assessment service.

“We will continue to strive to provide excellent services by highly quali�ed sta� to those who require our support,” Mr Croxford said.

“We will be working alongside the

local health services and promoting our strong partnerships approach to allied health interventions, and we will be introducing new programs that address changes in clients’ needs,” he said.

Mr Croxford said there would also be a dietitian on sta� one day a week, and that there were plans to employ a physiotherapist one day a week to assist with nutritional requirements and mobility issues.

More hours of vital services would also include an increase in community-based meal programs in Korweinguboora, Yendon, Glen Park, Mt Wallace and Elaine.

“�ere has been wonderful work done by the sta� in this department, ensuring some of our most vulnerable residents are receiving the support and dedicated care they require,” Mr Croxford said.

“And, along with Meals on Wheels, respite and property maintenance, it’s exciting to be able to add these extra health services to the services council already o�ers,” he said.

For the past �ve years, Moorabool shire’s aged and disability services has supported 650 to 750 clients a week, covering all areas in the shire.

Victoria Police is calling on drivers to take more care in 2015 a�er almost 700 people were injured or killed on Brimbank and Melton roads last year.

Figures obtained from the Brimbank and Melton highway patrols reveal six fatal collisions on Brimbank roads in 2014 – up from �ve the year before. �ere were 134 serious-injury collisions where the injured person was admitted to hospital (149 in 2013), and 335 collisions resulting in injury (360).

Ms Van Drunen was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the end of 2011 and started chemotherapy in 2012. She also underwent a hysterectomy.

�e mother of one said the hardest thing now was knowing her son would never have a sibling.

Ms Van Drunen said having cancer was di�cult to talk about when she was �rst diagnosed but she now feels good, is enjoying life and wants to inform others.

“I still tell people [that they need] to know the symptoms and know that pap smears are for cervical cancer, not ovarian cancer,” she said.

At her ‘A�ernoon Teal’, Ms Van Drunen will tell guests about the symptoms to look out for and how to show support for someone battling ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer has the lowest survival rate of all women’s cancers. Of 1400 Australian women diagnosed every year, 1000 die from the disease. �ere is no early detection test.

�e lead-up to Christmas is the busiest time of the year for family violence services, with Women’s Health West (WHW) receiving the same number of police referrals in December as it did for the entire year in 2006-07.

WHW received 657 police referrals for the western metropolitan area in December last year and 715 in November.

According to WHW 24-hour crisis response co-ordinator Louisa, the service received 708 police referrals for the entire 2006-7 year.

“It’s positive in that people are reporting it more. It’s becoming everyone’s business instead of staying hushed up,” she said.

“�e festive season is a time when families can be quite stressed �nancially and emotionally.

“While alcohol or drugs don’t help, they’re not the cause. It’s ultimately about power and control.”

Council of Single Mothers and �eir Children spokeswoman Kerry Davies said Christmas could be troubling for single parents.

“For parents who are separated and share custody of children, it can lead to much contention over who has them and when,” she said. “Domestic violence doesn’t always end when people separate.”

Ms Davies said although stress was o�en a factor, it was no excuse.

“People who are stressed and deal with it by being violent at home know the di�erence,” she said.

“�ey don’t go to work and do it to their boss.”

Despite a return to cooler temperatures this week, authorities are warning residents to be extra vigilant to the threat of �res this summer.

Bacchus Marsh CFA 4th lieutenant Dale Salathiel said his team had responded to about 13 bush�res by the end of the �rst week of 2015.

“Most of the �res we attended to have been large-scale and there have been a lot of �res,” Mr Salathiel said.

“We don’t know what’s around the corner.” He advised residents to keep an eye out on

“Practice loading the children and pets into the car in a mock-evacuation to ensure you are ready well before you need to leave.”

Peter Faux tapped his way into the magical world of dance at just 12 years of age.

“I started with tap and jazz then picked up classical,” Faux said.

�is year, the 65-year-old will celebrate a milestone – the 30th anniversary of his Peter Faux Dance Ensemble in Melton.

Faux and four colleagues teach classes in classical, contemporary, folk, hip-hop, jazz, tap and acrobatic dancing.

Even though the well-respected teacher misses performing, he says teaching provides ample satisfaction.

He believes the secrets to success are discipline and hard work.

A building company will go back to the drawing board in its bid to develop a Kurunjang site, a�er an unfavourable ruling by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Keilor Park-based Nostra Homes applied for a permit to build four single-storey dwellings on land in Rivette Street about two years ago.

Melton council refused the application because it was “inconsistent with numerous elements of Clause 55 of the Melton Planning

“�e client, in this case, was trying to maximise his return [as is his right as the land owner] by applying for a permit to build four homes on the subject site,” Nostra Homes marketing manager Mario De Petro said.

“�e permit, had it been granted, would have provided further options for a�ordability and diversity of product within the area.

“In this case, VCAT and the council did not agree with the original application so we have to go back to the drawing board with our client to come up with a better solution … we respect the referee’s decision.”

A new network aimed at connecting businesses will be launched in Melton this week.

�e ConnecT Network Melton and Bacchus Marsh will o�cially be launched on �ursday by local business Customised Training.

�e network was designed to bring together businesses in Melton and Bacchus Marsh to create a forum for discussion and connection.

Operations manager Pauline Caruana, who put forward the initiative, said there was a need for a network in the area.

“�ere was no local forum for businesses,” Ms Caruana said.

“We thought [of it] as a way of giving back to the community, and by being a training organisation and the facilitator we can really create something that can be of value to small and medium businesses in the area.”

Ms Caruana said small businesses needed support from each other and had a lot to share and learn.

“We hope we can facilitate networking between businesses and really help each other be successful,” she said.

“And we hope to be able to share what we’ve learnt by starting o� as a very small business and growing bigger over the years.”

�e network o�ers di�erent memberships, which include access to a monthly meeting, listings on an online business directory, a review of the business’s website, promotional opportunities and a monthly e-newsletter.

�e o�cial launch and �rst meeting will be held at Melton library at 5.15pm on January 15 and is free.

It was a Kris Kringle of a di�erent kind at Moorabool council at Christmas, with sta� opting to donate to council services instead of the traditional gi�-swapping.

In lieu of an o�ce KK, sta� helped raise more than $480 for the council’s Aged and Disability Services Bacchus Marsh food bus, a service run by volunteers to provide meals for people in need.

�e council’s community services directorate also donated food, which volunteers distributed at a Christmas lunch at the Quamby Room in Bacchus Marsh.

Mayor Paul Tatchell said he applauded the e�orts to give back to the community.

“�e decision to donate money and food in lieu of a Kris Kringle has resulted in more food going to those in need,” Cr Tatchell said.

“And, unfortunately, the number of people using this service continues to grow.”

�e food bus �rst drove into town in December 2013 with only two clients.

Now an average of between 30 and 40 people use the service every night.

In 2014, the food bus served about 2000 meals, 1300 cups of co�ee and 650 cups of Milo, the Milo being given mostly to children.

�e council has also supported the service with the installation of a three-phase power access and by opening the Quamby Room for people to have showers and eat in the dining area.

Bacchus Marsh doctor Ravin Sadhai is gearing up to support Febfast 2015 and encouraging others to jump on board.

Dr Sadhai says he will give up alcohol for 28 days to help raise funds for youth addiction.

FebFast challenges participants to refrain from their favourite vices, such as alcohol, sugar, social media, junk food or smoking, for the month of February.

Dr Sadhai took part in the challenge with his friends last year in a team they dubbed the “Feb Four”.

“To see how you can go without stu� is important to improve your lifestyle,” Dr Sadhai said. “I thought I’d try it and lead by example.”

Dr Sadhai said Febfast was also a good way to kickstart the new year towards better health.

He admitted the commitment was “fairly

di�cult” in the beginning, especially at social gatherings, but it got easier.

“I certainly don’t drink excessively, but I like a beer or two,” he said.

“I think it’s important to have these challenges and to challenge yourself in terms of trying to improve your lifestyle.”

Dr Sadhai and his Feb Four teammates, Kate, Peter and Andrea, raised $1000 last year.

“I think it’s an excellent thing to do and I highly recommend it to people from all walks of life,” he said. “Give it a go and be prepared to challenge yourself.”

Melton is one of the state’s most a�ordable destinations for investors, tenants and �rst home-buyers, according to a new report.

�e report by CoreLogic RP Data analysed the “Best of the Best for 2014” and found Melton suburbs were an ideal location for people seeking a�ordability.

Company spokesman Robert Larocca encouraged people who wanted a higher return for their property to invest and rent out properties in Melton South, where the

“If you’re trying to rent out a property, the most important thing is to have a really good property manager,” Mr Larocca said.

Senior property manager Jo Elma, of Ray White Melton, said she had noticed an in�ux

median sale price is $235,000 and rent is $260 – a 5.8 per cent yield.

“An investor looking for good rental yield would be more likely to �nd that in Melton than in the inner east,” Mr Larocca said.

According to the report, Melton South was ranked second in terms of “most a�ordable median weekly advertised rent”, just behind Lang Lang, 73 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

“[Melton] is undergoing change; it’s an area that’s been popular, more so with those buying newer properties,” Mr Larocca said.

Melton and Moorabool �re�ghters are asking locals to get behind them and help paint the town red next month.

As part of national Red Balloon Day, on February 28, Australians are being asked to show their support for �re�ghters by �ying red balloons from their mailboxes or fences as a simple way of saying “thank you, �reys”.

Melton �re brigade leading �re�ghter Shane Bailey says he’s hoping many people will get on board and pledge their support.

“Supporting the cause will allow for the purchase of additional equipment that brigades can then use to combat �res,” Mr Bailey said.

“�e thanks the community gives will be much appreciated.”

It’s CFA volunteers who appreciate the “thank you” e�orts the most, according to Bacchus Marsh �re brigade 4th lieutenant Dale Salathiel.

“A lot of people don’t realise we’re 100 per cent volunteers,” Mr Salathiel said.

He said �re�ghters o�en worked until the early hours of the morning only to face getting up at 6.30am to get to their “regular” jobs.

Ballan Farmers’ Market has become a favourite among locals since coming to town three years ago, and organisers are hoping it will only get bigger.

An average of 500 visitors, from Ballan and beyond, �ock to the market on the second Saturday of every month to snap up fresh produce and enjoy local bands.

�at number passed 800 in December and market treasurer Carol Sa�er hopes the growth trend will continue.

“We’re focusing on a wider catchment area of customers,” she said.

�e continued growth means the market is now self-sustaining, allowing organisers to introduce a “give back to the community strategy”.

Since last September, the market has donated more than $1000 to local organisations including Ballan District Health and Care and the Ballan Men’s Group.

“�is is in response to how the community has supported the market . . . it’s the community who made the gold coin donations which helped us get to where we are,” Ms Sa�er said.

“We feel this is the way to work with a community that has worked with us.”

Ms Sa�er said community spirit was always a vital part of market days.

“�e community spirit of Ballan comes through very, very strongly at the market,” she said.

“And we consider stallholders part of our community and part of our family, too.”

�e Ballan Farmers’ Market is held on the second Saturday of the month from 9am to 1pm at Mill Cottage, 96 Inglis Street, Ballan.

�e Western Spirit under-18s had a thrilling win against South East Bayside Breakers in Sunday’s Victorian Bushrangers 50-overs state cricket championship.

�e match went down to the �nal over, with the Spirit needing one wicket and the Breakers just seven runs for the win.

A runout on the �rst ball of the over clinched it for the Spirit, who had got o� to a bad start with the bat, stumbling to 4-27.

Opener Jarryd Clements anchored the innings, making 50 as the team struggled to post a score.

E�ective lower-order batting from No. 9 Jack Mattsson took the Spirit to 9-166, Mattsson making 39 before being run out.

In reply, the Breakers lost an early wicket before seemingly taking control at 2-76.

Tight bowling by the Spirit attack reaped 4-12 to give the team a chance.

Within sight of victory, the Breakers started to lose wickets and at the end fell just short, all out for 160.

�e Central Highlanders under-18 boys state team lost its opening match by 18 runs.

Originally the group D match between the Northern Falcons and Highlanders was scheduled to be played at Princes Park, Carlton, but the game was moved to Donvale a�er rain in the lead-up.

�e Falcons won the toss and decided to bowl.

Two early wickets, including state player Matthew Underwood, seemed to have justi�ed the call.

But the Highlanders’ other state representative, Blake �omson, set about righting the ship, setting some sort of total, and his 87 helped push the score to 8-166.

With 23, Romsey’s Rowan Scott was the only other batsman to get going.

Leg-Spinner Nick Strangio, who plays for Bacchus Marsh, struck early to have the Falcons 2-36, but the Highlanders struggled to keep the pressure on, let alone take wickets.

�e Falcons �nished on 5-181.�e Highlanders’ second-round match

was due to be played on Monday against Outer East Eagles, while the Spirit was due to play the Northern Rivers.

Round three today pits the Spirit against Mallee Murray Bulls, while the Highlanders take on South East Sharks.

�e results may not be there, but the positives are �owing for Melton in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s Craig Shield competition.

A�er the �rst four rounds of the under-15 comp, formerly known as the Hatch Shield, the Lions are winless a�er three matches, having had the bye in round one.

Coach Bill Clarke says the side has been competitive in the �eld but struggled when it’s time to bat.

�e Lions made 84 in their �rst match against Sunshine and went within a wicket of bowling them out for a win.

Against Werribee, the Lions made 7-109, which Werribee reached for the loss of six wickets. In a shortened match against Williamstown, the Lions made 7-52 while needing 63 for a win.

“Our bowling and �elding is up with any of the sides in the competition, but we don’t have the same batting strength,” Clarke said.

“We’re a young and inexperienced side, so it’s a learning curve and we are showing good signs.

“Many of our players have never played turf cricket before and are learning the concept as we go along.”

He said all the players had performed with the ball when given a chance.

“�ey’ve bowled really well and shared the wickets around,” he said.

“Tyler Cox, Brandon Foley, Jarod Spry, Ricky Frew and Aaron Clarke have all chipped away. �ey’ve been very consistent.”

Clarke said lack of batting experience wasn’t helped with the size of his players.

“Only three of our players played last year,” he said.

“Our boys aren’t as big as some of the other

clubs and have struggled to hit the ball to the boundary. �e grounds are bigger than what they’ve played on before.

“But we’ve been competitive considering our [lack of] experience.”

�e competition doesn’t get any easier for the Lions, who face the top two teams – Yarraville and Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows – in the last three rounds.

Both teams are unbeaten, with the game between them called o� on Sunday due to a damp wicket.

“As long as we’re competitive against Yarraville and Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows I’ll be happy,” Clarke said. “Both teams are a lot bigger and stronger.

“We’re in with a good chance against Altona. I think it will be a really close match and hopefully we can bat well and get a win.”

Country Week cricket tests Gisborne’s best juniorsIt was mixed fortunes for the Gisborne sides in the Central Highlands Junior Country Week �nals on Friday.

�e Gisborne Green teams in the under-13 and under-15 competitions were both expected to play Ballarat Gold in the �nals.

�e under-13 match went ahead, with Gisborne Green falling short of the title.

�e under-15 �nal was called o� due to the weather, with Gisborne Green taking home the title due to a better percentage in the round robin stage.

Speaking during the week, under-13 coach Gavin MacKay said the boys had really

enjoyed the competition. “It’s been a fantastic experience and a lot of fun, and we’ve had a couple of wins,” MacKay said.

“Last year the boys played in the second of the Gisborne teams, Gisborne White.

“�ey’ve learnt a little more with their cricket this year.

“Last year they were 12-year-olds and found themselves intimated,” MacKay said. “�is year they feel like they’re the big boys.

“�e running between the wickets and the applying of pressure has been a lot better.”

MacKay said there hadn’t been a standout in the side with all the boys playing their

roles well. “�ey have exceeded expectations and I thought at the very start they were a chance to make the �nal.

“�e lads have put in a great performance with the bat and the ball. �ree of them had to retire a�er making 40s.”

Unfortunately for Gisborne Green, they fell short in the �nal.

A�er sending Ballarat Gold in, the Greens restricted them to 5-151 o� the allocated 40 overs.

�e wickets were shared between the players, with �ve bowlers picking up a ‘pole’ each.

In reply, Green could manage only 7-118, Flynn Lakely top-scoring with 40 not out and having to retire.

Gisborne White �nished the under-13 competition in ��h place.

In the under-15s, Gisborne Green defended the title it won last year.

To take the title, Green won its three matches in the round robin phase to �nish on a better percentage than Ballarat Gold.

Gisborne White �nished sixth in the under-16 competition.

Bacchus Marsh remains in the �nals hunt of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup with a win over Gisborne on Saturday.

Sitting sixth on the ladder, Bacchus Marsh is now equal on points with Gisborne, which entered the round in fourth place and slipped to ��h with a loss.

Batting �rst, Bacchus Marsh opener Peter Lalor cracked a quick�re 54.

When he was dismissed with the score on 77, the wickets tumbled far too quickly for the Marsh’s liking, its innings �nishing at 9-146.

But it got o� to a perfect start with the ball, dismissing Gisborne captain-coach Daniel Trevillian for a duck.

Similar to its own innings, wickets fell rapidly, with Gisborne needing eight runs with two wickets in hand to win.

Bacchus Marsh managed to get both wickets without a run scored, to win by seven runs.

In B-grade, Bacchus Marsh produced a shock with its massive win over Diggers Rest Bulla.

Batting �rst, Bacchus Marsh made the most of benign conditions, reaching 7-210.

Ian Spiteri top-scored with 70 and opener Jack Lalor made 64.

Diggers Rest Bulla could manage only 111, with Robert Somers and Jack Powell taking four wickets apiece.

�e loss drops Diggers Rest Bulla outside the top four, while Bacchus Marsh is nine points clear of the bottom-placed Sunbury United.

St Anthonys also su�ered a loss: to East Sunbury for the second time this season.

Bacchus Marsh on a rollCricketMelton didn’t make it on to the pitch in its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association match on Saturday after competition organisers kept a number of wickets closed due to last week’s downpours. In the north-west group, which includes Melton, only one match went ahead. The teams that didn’t play, including Melton and its opponent Brunswick, split the points. This week Melton faces Preston in a two-dayer.

SoccerFormer Kurunjang Secondary College student Mathew Leckie was a lead hand for Australia in its 4-1 win over Kuwait at the start of the Asian Cup at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Friday. Leckie plies his trade for FC Ingolstadt 04 in the German second division but came home to help the Socceroos press for Asian football’s biggest trophy. Keilor Park and Melbourne Knights youth player Matthew Spiranovic, former St Albans Saints and Melbourne Knights player Ivan Franjic and Green Gully Cavaliers-produced Aziz Behich were other locals selected for the Socceroos.

CricketThe North West Metropolitan Cricket Association remains unbeaten in the under-18 Phil Arnold Shield and under-16 Jim Beitzel Shield after the �rst three rounds. In the under-16 competition, the Western Region Junior Cricket Association sits eighth on the ladder after three rounds, including one win. Two rounds remain in the competition before �nals.

New Panthers coach aims for big marks �e lure of being able to coach in his home town was a major factor for Mark Pederson taking on the Melton South football coaching job.

A�er months of searching, the Ballarat Football League club appointed Pederson to the role in late October.

He was set to continue his role with VFL club Coburg before the Panthers got in touch.

“It was a very late appointment and I had just been reappointed at Coburg,” Pederson said.

“I live in Melton and, being at VFL level, it’s very full on.

“I was sick of travelling and was approached by Melton South. It was hard to leave Coburg as it’s every coach’s dream to coach at that level.”

Pederson, a premiership coach with Romsey in the Riddell District Football League, says he’s excited by the challenge ahead.

“�ey seemed very enthusiastic and I know

a lot of people at Melton south; it was my brother’s club.

“�ey �nished second-bottom and I love a challenge. I feel like I can do something.

“�e challenge inspires me and the players I have met … a lot of young kids who want to learn about the game and improve.”

He said the club would build around its younger players.

“We are forming a new, exciting culture at this club,” he said.

“�e under-18 team �nished on top of the ladder and they’re exciting young players.

“If I can introduce some exciting senior players, we will get the right mix and anything is possible.

“I want players at the club for the right reasons and I’m happy with who we have here,” Pederson told Star Weekly.

Joining Pederson in the coaches’ box is former AFL player Darren Stanley and Panthers favorite son Shane Geddes.

“Any player coming into the club will get coaching equal to or better than anything in the BFL and RDFL,” Pederson said.

He said the club would announce some signings once they became o�cial.

As well as looking to develop the club, Pederson wants to develop the players to be the best they can.

“I certainly want to help them achieve the dream of playing at the highest level they want to,” he said.

“If we have young players who can play TAC or VFL, I will be pushing them in that direction.”

It’s a big couple of years coming up for Melton Hockey Club.

On the back of the club’s women’s team making the �nals for the �rst time last season, the club is focusing on growing its junior program and improving its men’s division.

New president Ron Shadbolt says club members are excited by the challenges ahead, including the opening of a new centre early next year.

“�e new facility means a lot to our club,” Shadbolt told Star Weekly.

“A lot of people haven’t realised we are behind the old Mowbray school.

“�e new owners have let us stay there otherwise we would have closed down. But we’re still out of sight and, to a degree, out of mind.”

with David Gorton, says the club is searching for new players.

“A lot of them in Melton play elsewhere. Figures tell us at least 60 players in Melton turn out for other clubs,” he said.

“Our junior program has healthy numbers and we’re planning to run a competition in Melton that means they don’t have to travel to play.

“�is is the �rst time we’ll have done that. It will be a �ve-a-side internal competition.

“Hockey Victoria will also be running skills programs in Melton and Caroline Springs schools to get more children interested.”

Of the senior side of things, Shadbolt says the club is keen to build on the success of last season.

“We have a new men’s coach and we want to see it developed. �ere’s a lot of untapped talent and we want to go up into the higher league,” he said.

“With the women, we were one or two

players short of being in the mix for promotion. We made �nals for the �rst time and weren’t that far from being in the promotion mix.

“We’ve had a real explosion of numbers on the women’s side in the last few years, going from 12 women to 55.”

�e men’s side will have a familiar face in charge this year: Glenn Lawrence.

“We decided we needed a change, with Scott McLaren having been in charge for nearly six years,” Shadbolt said.

“He had been enthusiastic and hard working but, like us, realised we needed a change. He will still be involved with the club.

“Glenn [Lawrence] has been a club member at least 10 years. He’s coached us before and has played 500 games of hockey so he has a lot of knowledge and experience.

“We’re still young and quite inexperienced, so he will be an asset.”

Crosstown rivals Melton and Melton South won’t have to wait long to face o� in 2015, with the teams to do battle in the opening round of the Ballarat Football League.

Action starts on April 18 for all clubs, except reigning premier North Ballarat City, which has the bye.

�e Bloods and Panthers will play under lights in round one at Melton Recreation Reserve in one of two clashes between the clubs, the other being in round 13’s rivalry round.

Both clubs will play a second night match when they travel to Clarke Oval to play Sunbury in rounds �ve and four.

Darley will host Sunbury in round one, while Bacchus Marsh plays Sebastopol at Marty Busch Reserve.

�e Cobras’ �rst home game is in round two when they face Devils in the clubs’ traditional Anzac Day match.

�e two clubs will play each other again in rivalry round.

�e football grand �nal rematch between North Ballarat City and Ballarat will be in round three, while the A-grade netball grand �nal rematch between Melton and Sunbury is in round �ve.

�e senior grand �nals will be held on the same weekend as last year – September 19-20 – while the league will play Bendigo in the AFL Victoria country championships on May 23.

BFNL operations manager Aaron Nunn said the league was happy with the overall �xturing.

“We’ve been able to work a number of special features into next season’s draw, which includes a number of marquee games for all clubs that will hopefully draw more spectator attention and a number of initiatives to assist with the maintenance of facilities and upkeep of local grounds,” he said.

“�is year’s draw has been particularly di�cult to put together given the number of variables we need to work with.

“While not all requests could be granted, which is the case every year, we’re extremely happy that we’ve been able to work in a majority of club requests for the season ahead.”

Melton derbya �rst-round blast for BFL

�e Eynesbury Eagles’ top two sides remain on track to �nish on top of their ladders in the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association a�er hard-fought wins on Saturday.

In A-grade, the Eagles struggled to chase down Altona Sports’ modest 75.

�e Eagles appeared to be coasting at 5-49, but then the wickets started to fall.

�ey found themselves needing nine runs with one wicket remaining.

No.10 Ray Davis and No.11 Mark Pino got them across the line, the team registering their own humble 9-78.

In B-grade, the Eagles were six wickets down when they reached the Altona Roosters’ 120.

�e Eagles are two points clear of St Johns on the B-grade ladder and eight points clear of Manor Lakes in A-grade.
