    tradition

    By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun

For 14-year-old Mt. Laurel resi-dent Matthew Thomas, golf wasalways in his blood.

His grandfather Fred playsgolf. His father Kevin also playsgolf. So it shouldn’t have been asurprise when Matthew pickedup a set of clubs and began play-ing at the age of 9.

Today, Matthew not only playsthe sport regularly, but he has be-come one of the better golfers hisage on the South Jersey Junior

Tour. He has won a pair of tour-naments individually, and on July25, he teamed up with his dad towin the tour’s Parent-Child Clas-sic Championship at Old YorkCountry Club. The duo shot a 67to win the tournament by threestrokes. Their score was the bestacross all three of the tour’s divi-sions.

It’s been a summer of changefor Burlington County’s commu-nity college.

In June, Burlington CountyCollege transformed into RowanCollege at Burlington Countyafter signing a partnership withRowan University. With the part-nership, all Rowan College atBurlington County students will

be accepted to Rowan Universityonce they complete their associ-ate’s degree and certain program-specific requirements. In addi-tion, the university is offering se-lect courses at RCBC and is pro-viding five, $2,000 scholarshipsannually.

With the change in name willcome a newly designated maincampus, and school officials an-nounced Mt. Laurel has been cho-

sen to be the school’s new epicen-ter.

Rowan College at BurlingtonCounty announced on July 27 itwill soon close its 40-year-oldPemberton campus and make Mt.Laurel the school’s main campus. The move was announced aboutsix weeks after the partnershipbetween RCBC and Rowan Uni-versity was announced. PaulDrayton, president of Rowan Col-lege at Burlington County, said

the campus change is the nextmajor step in the school’s trans-formation.

A number of factors played inthe decision to make Mt. Laurelthe main campus. The biggest fac-tor was the number of studentsand staff who reside in andaround the township. With shiftsin population and demand overrecent years, Drayton said morestudents are now attending class-

es on the Mt. Laurel campus thanall of the college’s other campus-es combined.

“The majority of our studentsattend class in Mt. Laurel,” Dray-ton said. “Over the last decade orso, the numbers have shifted dra-matically.”

“The decision was made thatthe students are here and the fac-ulty wants to be here,” Draytoncontinued. “Many of our studentsand faculty live close to the Mt.

Laurel area.”Another big factor was the cost

of maintaining the aging Pember-ton campus. The college per-formed a study revealing Pember-ton was in need of infrastructureimprovements costing approxi-mately $50 million.

When the partnership withRowan was discussed, Draytonsaid the university was very in-terested in making Mt. Laurel themain campus for students.

“This is where Rowan wantedto teach their courses and class-es,” he said. “This is where ourother on-site partners are locatedas well.”

Making Mt. Laurel RCBC’smain campus will involve makinga number of improvements to theexisting buildings. When thechange was discussed, it was dis-covered the college would nothave to make major additions tocombine the two campuses.

    “The consultants came back

and said we have the capacity toconsolidate in Mt. Laurel,” Dray-ton said.

    Incumbent board members Maureen

Sojka and Ronald Frey will run for re-elec-tion against newcomers Michele-Ann Frey

and Melissa DeClementi. Sojka serves asthe board’s president and is running forher third term after originally being elect-ed in 2009. Frey is a long-time member of the board. He served from 1987 to 1996 andagain from 2003 through today. Joanne

Pelly, whose term expires at the end of thisyear, did not file to run for re-election.

In the Lenape Regional High School Dis-trict, John Jeffers will run for re-electionunopposed for a Mt. Laurel seat on theboard.

The school board elections will takeplace Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The following information was providedby the Mt. Laurel Police Department.

Several unlocked vehicleson Waverly Avenue were en-tered during the overnighthours of July 26 into July 27.Loose change and wallets weretaken.

A guest of a hotel on Route 73 reportedthat someone stole $1,500 worth of jewelry

from their hotel room on the after-

    noon of July 26.

A guest of a hotel on FellowshipRoad reported that someone stolea watch valued at $250 from their

hotel room on the afternoon of July 26.

On July 28 at 4:35 p.m., Mt. Laurel Policeresponded to Cedar Lane for the report of subjects selling items door to door. During

    New Jersey State Police are

    spending $1.5 million to outfit

    1,000 troopers over the next

nine months with body cameras. It’s a

hefty price to pay for technology, but a

very small one when considering the

    good it will do.

Body cameras for police have be-come increasingly popular throughout

    the country following police shootings

that made national headlines in places

    such as Ferguson, Mo.

Troopers will wear the body cam-

eras on either their shirt or their hat,

and will be required to turn them on

    during traffic stops, protests, investiga-

    tions and while making arrests.

Acting state Attorney General JohnHoffman said the cameras “will act as

    an objective witness in police-involved

    shootings and other use-of-force inci-

    dents.”

    Some local police departments, such

    as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and

    even Rowan University, have already

adopted body cameras for their police

forces. And more could be coming, as

the state plans to use $2.5 million in

forfeiture funds to help other local de-

    partments buy cameras.

Police body cameras are a wonderful

idea, and any state money that can be

used to help local departments outfit

their officers with them is a good

thing. The safety and security of the people

of New Jersey are of the utmost im-

portance, above all other concerns of

living in our state. Any initiative that

improves that safety and security –

while at the same time serving as an

objective judge for citizens and offi-

cers – is something that should be ex-

    plored and implemented.

isting buildings will involve re-purposing space to use it more ef-ficiently. One example Draytongave was re-purposing some of the school’s computer labs to usefor office or classroom space.Much of the re-purposing work is

expected to begin late this year.

Drayton said the school isworking on other improvementsto enhance the atmosphere of thecampus.

“We also have a plan to betterconnect the existing buildings togive it more of a college-like feel,”he said.

One building the college willconstruct is a new student center.Drayton said planning for thenew building will begin in thenear future and will include a li-

brary, dining facility, student suc-cess center and more. The shift from Pemberton to

Mt. Laurel will be a gradualprocess. Drayton expects the tran-sition to take about 12 to 18

    months. However, he hopes the

change will bring a fresh look tothe Mt. Laurel campus and allowit to serve as a model for othercommunity colleges around theregion.

“The entire package is reallydesigned to really look like what amodern community collegeshould look like,” he said.

The school is having a celebra-tion of the new changes on Tues-day, Aug. 18 at the Mt. Laurel cam-pus in the Enterprise Center. The

school is celebrating its recentchanges and will unveil its newlogo. Doors open for the celebra-tion at 3 p.m. and guests canRSVP at www.bcc.edu/logo-event-rsvp.

Matthew said he didn’t thinkhe and his dad would win enter-ing the day. His goal was to enjoythe time he was spending withKevin and play as best he could.

“I really enjoy playing with mydad,” Matthew said. “I play withhim most of the time at practicerounds. It was just a really funtournament.”

Kevin said Matthew played out-standing on July 25 and was thebiggest reason they won the tour-nament.

“It meant a tremendousamount,” Kevin said about win-ning the tournament. “To play around with your son is alwaysspecial, but to win a tournamentmeans a lot.”

Kevin and Matthew frequentlyplay at Ramblewood Country

Club. Kevin has coached Matthewsince his son first picked up golf clubs at the age of 9 and he hasbeen able to watch him grow.

“I started taking him down to alocal chip and putt,” Kevin said.

“I told him he had to improve andget better to play the biggercourse.”

Matthew is not all that differ-ent from his father. Kevin alsopicked up golf around the sameage as his son and used to shootpractice rounds with his dad.

“My dad played and I got thegolf bug when I was small,”Kevin said.

When Matthew was younger, golf wasn’t his favorite sport. While he started playing golf when he was 9, he didn’t beginplaying competitively until heturned 13.

“I played baseball then,”Matthew said. “That’s what Iwanted to do mostly. Then I kindof switched over.”

Matthew credited his dad forhelping him become a bettergolfer. As Matthew improved hisskills, he moved up from the chipand putt course to full-size holes.

“He taught me everything withmy swing,” Matthew said. “Iloved playing golf. I just wanted tostart playing it more.”

At 13, Matthew decided hewanted to focus on golf instead of baseball and began to play on theSouth Jersey Junior Tour. Themove was crucial to Matthew’s

improvement as a golfer.“It was perfect for him,” Kevin

said. “It’s competitive, but not aton of pressure.”

and caring staff who go above and beyond

for residents, she quickly decided to turn her 30-day respite stay into her permanent

Matthew was so successful inthe future division, he moved upto the tour’s high school divisionin the summer of 2014.

The move to a higher divisionwas a bit of an adjustment forMatthew. He admitted there weresome nerves when he began play-ing against kids three to fouryears older than he was.

“I was nervous at first, becauseI didn’t know what to expect,” hesaid. “But I’m used to it now.”

Matthew believes he has bene-fitted from playing tougher com-petition. Not only has he been

forced to up his game in tourna-ments, but Matthew said he has

learned a lot about the game justtalking to the older players on thetour. He believes he is fully pre-pared to try out for Lenape HighSchool’s golf team next spring.

“I don’t think it’ll be a whole lotdifferent,” he said. “I hope thatit’s kind of the same thing.”

While Matthew looks forwardto playing on the high schoollevel, he still relishes the times hegets to play with his father Kevinand grandfather Fred, who nowlives in Pittsburgh. WhenMatthew and Kevin are able to gettogether with Fred, the three al-ways try to find time to play around and continue what is now athree generation-long family tra-dition.

Golfing runs through three Thomas generations
