Mech-Tool Engineering Ltd [MTE] is a technology-led company with a global name for the protection of people and equipment from fi re, blast and radiant heat hazards in onshore and off shore oil & gas, renewable energy and petrochemical industries. MTE devote a unique wealth of specialist skills and over 45 years experience to design, build and deliver individual and dependable solutions.

In the course of helping some of the world’s biggest names in the oil and gas sector to achieve highly accurate designs and cost projections, MTE has developed its own computer based tools and systems. These elite tools are the culmination of in-depth experience and knowledge built up over 45 years. They have been independently validated and tested for their reliability in solving thermal, mechanical and structural problems.

So effi cient and cost-eff ective have they proved themselves to be in the design of fi re, blast and heat related structures, MTE decided to form a distinct Design Consultancy business unit in July 2012. Clients can now call on its specialist help either as a stand-alone service or as part of a full turnkey project alongside other MTE business streams - Fire and Blast Solutions and Modular Solutions.

This design consultancy concept was welcomed by the high hazard industries. Its launch was quickly followed by four commissions from a global off shore oil & gas construction company, and the team led by Technical Director and Chartered Engineer Alan Mather expanded with the addition of two more structural design engineers.

The team uses their proprietary tools combined with design expertise and knowledge to provide the very best in accurate calculations to analyse what can sometimes be complex structures - often including stressed skin design - to withstand a unique set of fi re and blast conditions.

They are speed, accuracy and credibility, a combination which leads to cost savings. For example, in a project where the weight of 5000m2 of stainless steel fi re and blast rated walls was an issue, MTE reduced the wall weightsby 20% compared to comparative systems and this would be 67% against fl at plate bulkhead.

MTE can off er up to H120 and jet fi re rating approval without the need for passive fi re protection, leading to further cost savings. Running the Design Consultancy from the MTE Darlington base gives customers the advantageof competitive rates, leading to still further savings. That’s how design counts.
