• ONU: VISIONS DIVERGENTES SUR LA CRISE EN SYRIE

Par Cara Anna The Associated Press

• PUTIN'S PLAN: WHAT WILL RUSSIA BOMB IN SYRIA?

Posted by: Aron Lund

• With Russia increasing its involvement in Syria, what are the likely first targets for any potential military action?

Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to order his military into Syria may simply have been the gut reaction of a hard-power ruler who, for lack of tools other than a hammer, can imagine no problem other than a nail. But dispatching the Russian Air Force in support of the embattled Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad may also have been a

true political masterstroke, in which case its political impact is likely to make a far bigger crater than any of the bombs that Putin is preparing

to drop on Syria.

The first indications of a Russian military deployment in Syria leaked out in late August. It gradually became clear that

something big was happening at the Basil al-Assad International Airport near Latakia in government-controlled western Syria. Not only

was Assad's army getting new weapons, it was also getting new comrades-in-arms.

According to satellite imagery reviewed by the Washington Post and The Aviationist, a specialist...

• ERDOĞAN'S DELICATE VISIT TO BRUSSELS

Posted by: Marc Pierini

On October 4–6, the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, will be in Brussels for a long-planned visit to Belgium. The trip occurs in the

midst of a major international crisis, as Russia is getting in on the act in Syria and asylum seekers continue to surge toward Europe. The visit also comes at a very troubled time in Turkey, where on November 1 a

parliamentary election will be held amid a spiral of violence and a sharp deterioration of the rule of law.

This makes for a rather difficult agenda when President Erdoğan meets European Council President Donald Tusk, European Commission

President Jean-Claude Juncker, and European Parliament President Martin Schulz in Brussels.

• ASSAD'S POSITION STRENGTHENS IN SYRIA WITH

RENEWED RUSSIAN AND IRANIAN SUPPORT

Russia's importance to Turkey's economy — particularly its energy sector — perhaps shadowed the comments Erdogan made on his

return. When asked about a solution to Syria's brutal civil war, the Turkish president gestured to a long-mooted, potential "process" of

political transition. He spoke directly for the first time of the possible role that could be played by the embattled Syrian President Bashar al-

Assad.

[How Turkey's Erdogan and Russia's Putin were made for each other.]

"The process could possibly be without Assad, or the transitional process could be with him," Erdogan told reporters after Eid prayers

in Istanbul.
