2.Themainspowerswitch.Thisisasmallrecessedswitch.Ifthesystemisoffandthepowercordisconnected,presstheswitchonceusingyourfingernailtobootthesystem.Ifthesystemison,presstheswitchoncetoshutdownthesystem.

3.Minijackinputforinfraredremotesensor.[Tobeimplemented]

Enablingtrackinforma3onontheMU1display
ToshowthesongthatcurrentlyplaysontheMU1display,youneedtoenabletheMU1soTwaretocommunicatewiththeRoonLabssoTware.Thisisfacilitatedbya‘RoonExtension’.SinceRoonExtensionscanonlybeenabledbytheaccountowneroftheRoonsoTware,youneedtoperformthisstepyourself.Pleaseconnectatablet,smartphone,PCorMactothesamenetworkastheMU1andinstallthe‘Roon’(not‘RoonServer’)remotecontrolsoTware:hQps://roonlabs.com/downloads.html.Next,pleasefollowthefollowingsteps:
• SwitchontheMU1forthefirst7me.
• StartRoononthetabletorPC/MacsoTware,waitun7ltheMU1popsupasadeviceandselectit.

VolumecontroloftheLS1DSPandtheFPGAvolumecontrolofselecteddigitaloutputsshouldnowworkviaboththeRoonappandtheMU1maincontrol.Addi7onallyyouwillseeinforma7onaboutthecurrentlyplayingtrackinthedisplayandaprogressbaroftherunningtrack.
VolumeseWngs
Weputinasafetylimitonthevolumecontrol.WheneveryouturntheMU1maincontrolortheRoonappvolumefaderquicklytothemaximumposi7on,thevolumewilljumpbacktothelowestlevel(thefaderwillstayatthemaxposi7onthough).Thiswillprotectyourequipmentwhenthecontrolsaresettomaxbyaccident.Ifthishappenstoyou,becarefultopausethemusicfirstbeforetouchingthefader,sinceitcans7llbecomeloudwhentouchingthefader.
Asanalterna7ve,werecommendtosetacomfortlimitfortheRoonfaderinthedevicesetupsoyoucannotaccidentallysetthevolumeveryloudbyslidingthevolumebartoofartotheright.Incaseyoudoliketoplaylouderthanthelimit,youcans7llpressthe+or–buQonsintheRooninterfacetoincreaseordecreasethevolumeoftheLS1playbacksystem.Tosetthecomfortlimit,pleasebrowsetotheAudiotaboftheRoonse`ngs,tapthe‘cog-wheel’configura7onlogoontherightoftheGAMU1deviceandselect‘DeviceSetup’,asshowninthepicturebelow.

Hereyouselect“Setvolumelimits”andsetitto‘64’whichcorrespondstoanacceptablecomfortlevelformostmusic.IfyourtastemainlycoverssoTlyrecordedtracks,youmaydecidetosetahigherlevel.

WhileyouareintheDeviceSetuppage,pleasesetthe“DSDplaybackstrategy”to“Na7ve”ifitisnotalready.TheMU1FPGAprocessorhasasuperiorqualityDSDdownsamplerandwerecommendtousethisfeaturetoplayDSDfilestotheLS1systemorotherPCMDAC’s.Youmayalsoopenthe“advanced”partofthiswindowandcheckwhetherthemaxsamplerate(DSD)issetto“uptoDSD256”andthemaxsamplerate(PCM)issetto“upto384kHz”.

IntheLibrarypageoftheSe`ngsmenuRoonoffersseveralop7onsforthe‘BackgroundAudioAnalysisSpeed’.Werecommendtosetthisto“ThroQled”andnottooneofthe“Fast”op7ons.ThismakessuremostoftheprocessingpoweroftheCPUisdedicatedtoaudioplayback.Youmayalsosetitto“Off”,Roonwillthencalculatethewaveformofanewfileontheflywhenitisplayed.

UpdatesofRoonso]ware
RoonLabsoffersfrequentupdatestoboththeRoonCoreappintheMU1andtheRoonRemoteappinyourtabletorsmartphone.Updatesonyourphone/tabletareusuallyinstalledautoma7cally.IfaRoonCoreupdateisavailabletheRoonRemoteappwillinformyouaboutthat.YouarepermiQedtostartaRoonCoreupdateprocessintheMU1fromtheRoonRemotephone/tabletapp,butwearenotliablefortheimpactofproblemsthatmayoccur.Ofcoursewewillinthatcaseoffersupporttohelpyousolvetheproblem,wherepossible.

Whenyouaddafolderwithlotsofalbums,Roonwillanalysethefiles,downloadartworketc.Itwillalsodoananalysisoftheaudiodatatostorewaveformsthatareshownintheuserinterfaceandtostoretheaverageloudnessofthetrackforloudnessnormaliza7onuse.Duringtheini7alsetup,Roon’slaborcancausethesystemtobelessresponsive.Althoughitshouldbepossible,werecommendtonotusethesystemformusicplaybackwhileRoonrunsthisanalysisforthefirst7meonalargesetofalbums.Ifyouletitrunovernight,itisusuallyfinishedthenextday.
Whenyouaddafewalbumsonly,playbackisnothamperedandthiswillnotaffecttheplayback.Neverthelesswerecommendtousethe“ThroQled”modefortheanalysistokeeptheCPUloadlow.ThiscanbeselectedintheRoonse`ngs,seechapter“Backgroundanalysisspeed”.ConsulttheRoonmanualformoreinforma7on.

PleasemarkthatwhenplayingalbumsinDSDformat,theendandstartofthefilesarenotreproduced100%gaplessbydesign,whichmeansthatasoTglitchcanbeheardatthestartofanewtrack.ThisglitchisinthemasterfilesandcannotbesolvedintheMU1orRoonsoTware.Also,ashortmomentaTerplaybackofaDSDfilehasstopped,Roonwillswitchtoa‘silent’PCMstreamandthisalsocausesasoTglitch.

Firstofall,openthehelppageoftheMU1menu(seechapter“Control”)andnotethehostnameandIP-address.
Windowsusers:
Note:NotallWindowscomputerscanusethehostnameforfindinganinternaldiskinthenetwork.Thisisbecause“mDNS”isnotna3velysupportedbyWindows.However,onmanyWindowscomputerssoUwarehasbeeninstalledthataddedsupportforthisprotocolandthereforeweadvicetofirsttrytousethehostnameandifthisdoesn’twork,usetheIPaddress.

TheMU1willremembertheselectedsourcewhenshu`ngdownthesystem.WhenyoupoweruptheMU1itwilltrytoselectthismemorisedsource.IfitwasasourceontheLS1(AnalogorDigital)thissourcewillbeselectedassoonasyourLS1isdetected.NotethatifyouoperatetheMU1beforetheLS1isdetected,theMU1willautoma7callyfall-backtothe‘Roon’sourceselec7on.
WhenthereisnoLS1connected,thesourceselec7onmenuwilllookliketheimagebelow.MarkthatinthispicturetheMU1doesnotdetectasignalonthedigitalXLRinputand“NoSignal”isshowntopleT.Whenthereisasignalthereceivedsamplerateisindicatedhere.
Note:WhenyouselectanLS1orDigitalInsource,theMU1willautoma3callypauseRoon.Markthatinthiscaseitiss3llpossibletostartRoonplaybackintheRoonApp.Thisisnotanintendedusecase,sopleasemindthefollowing:ifyouselectedanLS1input,RoonplaybackwillbecomeaudibleonDigitalout1and2.IncaseyouconnectedaDACtooneoftheseoutputsyouwillhearmusicbutthetrackinforma3onisnotshownonthedisplay.IfyouselectedaDigitalInsource,RoonwillnotplayproperlysincetheFPGAboarddoesnotrequestaudiodatafromtheinternalPCinthismode.AsaresultRoongetsconfusedandjumpstothenexttrackintheplaylistatirregularpace.TherewillbenodamagedonetothesystembutwerecommendtoonlystartRoonplaybackintheAppwhenRoonisselectedasasource.

Volumecontrolondigitalout1and2:Inthismenuyoucanselectwhichdigitaloutputshouldhavedigitalvolumecontrol.VolumecontrolintheMU1offersagreatuserexperiencewhencombinedwithRoon’sremotecontrolcapabili7es.Thisvolumecontrolisperformedatveryhighresolu7onintheMU1’sFPGA.Youmightwanttocompareitsqualitytothena7vevolumecontrolofyourDAC.
VolumecontroloftheLS1outputisalwaysdoneintheLS1andcannotbeswitchedoff.
Hint:whenusingtheMU1asadigitalsourcefora‘digital’loudspeakerthathasonboarddigitalprocessingsuchascrossoverfilters,itisrecommendedtodisabletheMU1volumecontrolsothatthespeakerwillreceivetheaudioatfullwordlength.

DoPonAES:“DoP”isbrieffor“DSDoverPCM”.Itisastandardfortranspor7ngDSD64audiooveranAES3orspdifPCMdigitalaudioconnec7on.SomeDACssupportthisformatandtheMU1isabletoforwardDSD64materialunalteredtotheseDACs.MarkthatvolumecontrolisimpossibleonDSDsignals,hencetheDoPop7onisdisabledwhenvolumecontrolondigitalout1or2isturnedon.Toavoidconfusion,volumecontrolonPCMsourcesisdisabledaswellwhenDoPisenabled.SincetheGrimmLS1doesnotsupportDoP,theDoPop7onwillbedisabledwhenanLS1isconnected.IfDoPisturnedoff,DSDmaterialwillbedecimatedtoPCMbytheFPGAwithveryhighresolu7on.

LED:ThebrightnessoftheLEDonthefrontoftheMU1canbeturneddownwiththisop7on.Thisinfluencesthebrightnessbothinopera7onandinstand-bymode.
Turnthemainknobclockwisetoincreasethebrightnessandan7-clockwisetodecreasethebrightness.PleasenotethattheLEDcannotbeturnedoffcompletelytofacilitateshowingwhethertheMU1isinopera7on/stand-byorpoweroff.
