The Story of an American Icon – The Mud Cat® Horizontal Auger Dredge

In 1962, Norbert Degelman and Harold Morgan built the first portable auger cutterhead dredge in a one car garage in a suburb of Fridley, Minnesota to solve the state’s lakeshore siltation problem. National Car Rental liked the idea and, in 1970, bought the manufacturing rights and later built over 500 Mud Cat auger dredges, many of which are still in operation today. This started the global environmental dredge industry.

In 1987, the Mud Cat brand was acquired by Ellicott, the largest dredge builder in the Americas, and popularity for the portable auger dredge continued to grow through the introduction of new dredge models and innovative technologies. Today, there are over 1,000 Mud Cat dredges operating around the globe from mine ponds in Mozambique to waste water ponds of Australia. Following in the innovative footsteps of its founders, Mud Cat is leading the small dredge industry with advances in automation, propulsion, and cutting technology.

Mud Cat, a Division of Ellicott Dredge Technologies (EDT), operates a state-of-the-art 75,000 ft. ISO 9001:2015 certified factory and 8,000 square ft. office in New Richmond, Wisconsin (45 minutes East of Minneapolis / St. Paul International Airport). Mud Cat continues its tradition of designing and manufacturing the best auger dredges in the industry that are constructed of the highest-grade materials including the hulls and superstructure which are exclusively sourced from North American steel mills and welded by American Welding Society certified welders.

Mud Cat is recognized around the world as an iconic American brand synonymous with the word “dredge.” Billions of cubic meters of sand, sludge, mud and hazardous waste have been dredged with Mud Cat dredges – with many of the dredges still operating after 50 years of steady service. It’s no surprise Mud Cat continues to live up to its motto, “The only way to stop a Mud Cat…is to turn off the key.”

The MC 225D, originally called the MC 815, is the longest lasting auger dredge in the industry. The MC 225D is a one-truck transportable dredge that has completed more industrial, agricultural, mining, and stormwater pond projects around the world than any other auger dredge system and is utilized by leading environmental contractors around the globe. The easy-to-use controls are stationed in a comfortable climate-controlled operator’s cabin. The dredge comes in two cutterhead configurations. The 815 Cutter is higher torque designed for consolidated materials and the 727 Cutter is a high shroud design for maximum solids intake. The 230 HP (172kW) engine powers a 2,000 gpm (453m3/hr.) hi-chrome slurry pump with up to 120 ft. (36.6m) head.

The MC 275D is the flagship of the Mud Cat diesel dredge product line designed to surpass the competition on every vital performance spec. This dredge includes state-of-the-art climate-controlled cab with dual 12-inch IQAN displays (for instrumentation and back-up camera display), joystick controls, jump seat (for deck hand) and LED lights. The system is one-truck transportable and comes standard with a powerful cable drive system as well as a robust dual marine prop drive system for transport down waterways and self-propelled dredging. The MC 275D boasts a powerful 300 HP (224 kW) diesel engine that powers a hi-chrome 3,000 gpm (681m3/hr.) slurry pump and aggressive 30,500 in-lbs torque cutterhead. The dredge cuts an even bottom profile down to a maximum depth of 25 ft. (7.6m).

D-Series Patented Technology

STANDARD PUMP DEFENDER® SYSTEM The patented Pump Defender, which comes standard on the MC 115D and MC 275D, is an advanced version of a horizontal auger cutterhead debris screen that is designed to allow uninterrupted flow to the slurry pump while the cutterhead cleans it after every revolution.

The Pump Defender has successfully operated in heavily polluted waterways in Southeast Asia and has reduced downtime by up to 90%. This improves operating efficiency, reduces diesel and labor costs, and allows the operation to stay ahead of schedule. A U.S. customer was so impressed with the Pump Defender technology that they returned their leased dredge to Mud Cat’s competitor and purchased a dredge with the Pump Defender system.

OPTIONAL PATENTED WEEDMASTER® CUTTERHEAD The optional patented WeedMaster cutterhead converts the Mud Cat MC 115D and MC 275D from hydraulic dredges into hydraulic weed harvesters making them the most versatile dredges in their respective classes. The WeedMaster simply bolts on in place of the standard dredge cutterhead allowing the dredge to cut reeds, cattails, hyacinths, sargassum, milfoil, and many other vegetation types and pump them to a remote discharge area. The WeedMaster cutterhead shreds the vegetation into 3-5 in. (76-127mm) pieces that quickly dry up as compost on shore. This technology is exclusive to EDT dredging products and has multiple patents. The main advantages are as follows: 1. Can operate deeper than mechanical harvesters; 2. Can transport vegetation to shore without a barge; 3. Can continuously cut and pump without having to stop to unload; 4. Requires no support barge or excavators for re-handling vegetation; and 5. Reduces the total carbon footprint by only requiring one diesel engine for the entire process.

Dredge Selection

E-SERIES ELECTRIC DREDGES For over 30 years Mud Cat has been the global leader for remote-controlled electric dredges. Mud Cat E-Series (electric) dredges are the preferred system by consulting engineers around the globe for removing accumulated solids from storage basins and lagoons. The E-Series auger dredge comes in five standard models: the MC 20E, MC 40E, MC 40E Deep Digging, MC 50E, and MC 100E, and can be customized for a specific application. The system can also be equipped with a PLC (programmable logic controller) to provide complete automation at industrial or wastewater facilities. The E-Series dredge is constructed of the highest-grade materials and will outlast the competition. All E-Series dredges come standard with variable frequency drives (VFD) for managing flow. The systems also have direct hydraulic drive for the slurry pump to prevent shaft failures which are common with competitor’s dredges. The horizontal cutterhead with standard liner protection wheels allows the dredge to cut an even bottom profile without damaging concrete or polyethylene lagoon liners. This allows the dredge to remove the maximum amount of material during each pass without leaving ridges of material behind which is a common issue with hanging pump dredges.

The MC 20E electric auger dredge is used for lower flow applications that require a complete lagoon cleanout to achieve

an even bottom profile, but not maximum flow due to a restrictive dewatering process or limited dewatering footprint.

The MC 40E electric auger dredge is the most popular E-Series dredge used for medium flow projects that are pumping into filter presses, geo-tubes, and centrifuges. Like the MC 20E, the MC 40E is easy to transport and fits inside a 40 ft. ocean container.

The MC 40E Deep Digging electric dredge takes the reliability and performance of the MC 40E and extends the depth to 30 ft. (9.1m) making it the deepest digging remote-controlled dredge with horizontal cutterhead in the industry.

The MC 50E electric auger dredge increases productivity and dredging depth allowing for greater versatility with a marginal increase in price over the popular MC 40E. Like the MC 20E and MC 40E the MC 50E is one truck transportable and fits into a 40 ft. ocean container with the cutterhead removed.

The MC 100E electric auger dredge is the powerhouse of the E-Series product line. The system is used for high production applications where a manned diesel dredge is not practical. The MC 100E meets the same productivity as diesel dredges twice its size and cleans lagoons and ponds out to a depth of 17 ft. (5.2m). There is no other electric auger dredge in the industry that meets the performance of the MC 100E.

E-Series Automation Technology

RADIO REMOTE SENSE™ TECHNOLOGY The Mud Cat product line allows for remote control of the dredging operation via a portable handheld transmitter called Radio Remote Sense (RRS). RRS technology controls the following functions: power on/off, travel direction and speed, slurry pump on/off and speed, auger on/off, and dredging depth. The handheld transmitter may be operated to a distance of 1,200 ft. (366m) line of sight from the dredging unit. Current operating functions of the system will be indicated via a dredge mounted five-color light tree.

BOTTOM SENSE™ TECHNOLOGY The Mud Cat Bottom Sense technology is designed to protect a pond’s subsurface or liner. This feature allows the dredge to automatically raise the auger when the bottom is contacted and lower the auger when the bottom is not present, thereby maximizing production rates while preserving the subsurface integrity by following the bottom contours of the pond.

AUTO SENSE™ TECHNOLOGY Auto Sense technology, which is standard automation technology feature on Mud Cat E-Series dredges, that allows for automated forward and reverse control. The Mud Cat dredge can be set to

automatic dredging until it hits the forward target. When it hits the forward target, it will automatically reverse to the rear target (starting point) and the operator can initiate the next cut. The targets provide a start and stop point that prevents the dredge from automatically walking up the bank of the pond when not properly monitored in automatic travel mode. This feature prevents expensive liner damage. This is a value added feature that is not offered by the competition.

SOLIDS SENSE™ TECHNOLOGY If your downstream operation needs a consistent slurry density for maximum productivity, Mud Cat’s Solids Sense technology is your answer. Adding Solids Sense technology to your dredging process will allow the system to automatically adjust the dredging functions to maintain a constant delivery of desired solids density. Solids Sense technology utilizes a density meter to monitor the slurry and react to composition changes faster than an operator, thereby increasing system efficiency and maintaining the desired slurry characteristic.

LATERAL SENSE™ TECHNOLOGY When your project requires automated lateral movement, Later Sense technology is the perfect complement to Auto Sense technology. In combination with a rail and cable system this feature allows for the automatic lateral shifting of the dredge after

each linear pass. The utilization of Auto Sense and Lateral Sense technologies allows the dredge to harvest an entire sediment pond automatically without requiring an operator’s assistance.

AUTOMATED REMOTE-CONTROL DREDGING Add as many options as you like, and Mud Cat will integrate them into a fully automated remote-controlled dredging system. This is achieved through the addition of a shore mounted control station. This, NEMA 4X, control panel allows the user to operate all onboard functions of the dredge while receiving continuous feedback from the unit’s sensors and instrumentations. The shore panel features wireless communication to the on-board PLC which eliminates the problems associated with hard wired systems. Mud Cat can customize the shore panel control station to your specific project requirements.
