REFLECTION: MULANAY MOVIE

Ria Espinosa (Ms. Jacklyn Jose) is a newly licensed doctor who ought to join the doctor to the barrios organization to help the places where there is a need for medical assistances. There she met Norma (Ms. Gina Alajar) a midwife located in the Barrio of Mulanay in Quezon. Norma became her buddy as she stayed on the said place. Ria is an important character in the story because she is the main avenue for the development of the barrio. So as Norma, midwife of the barrio. Norma being also a member of the Barrio, knows what to be developed and what the barrio needs, thus being able to help Ria in identifying interventions for the Barrio.Pre- Entry phase was shown in the movie when it was Rias first time arriving in Mulanay and she was observing the environment and there was voice over in the background saying the things she observed. Entry Phase was shown when she was introduced to Norma and the other people that lived with them in the Health center. It was also shown when Norma introduced Ria to the people of the barrio as the resident doctor. And as the time passes by, she came to realize that health is not the only problem of the barrio. Many other concerns should be considered. The light supply, water system, environmental threats, cleanliness and orderliness of the barrios properties. She then enlisted all those possibilities that made the barrio severely in need of health assistance. Analyzed all the causes why mostly the people on the barrio have had the same illness. It took her time to fit in in the said barrio. She was treated differently because the people were not used of having a doctor in their barrio. Ria was most of the time compared to the Albularyo and some people would say that they should have gone to the Albularyo instead of her. Although, it took some time, the people of the Barrio opened up to her and took her services openly; and treat her as a co-barrio fellowmen.Organization building and capability-building phase was when, Ria was wanting to have the cooperation of the whole barrio, Norma and Ria decided to call for a meeting that concerns the betterment of the barrio. She needs their help and cooperation. She advised to set all things in order. And convinced the fellowmen to build a deep-well for she found out that the cause of most diseases in the barrio were due to the water system. Many asked her about where should the funds go from. And Strengthening and sustenance phase was when Ria decided to go to Manila to ask the people she knows for funds. Then with her found funding and new equipment, she decided to go back to Mulanay. From there, new revelations came and moved her and so as new challenges tested her dedication. Lastly, Phase out is when she leaves the barrio.One thing that I realized from this movie is that you got to have a lot of dedication in what you do in order to truly help others, especially if you are a public health worker. It is not easy for a barrio like Mulanay to influence and change their habits or way of living. They could doubt what you say and compare you to someone who is most likely inexperienced but they trust anyways. It is also not easy to do things or renovations for a barrio that is out of their budget. Not to mention, the lack of manpower they allot for health services. You also need to change their beliefs when regards to health. Teamwork is another. If you dont have the cooperation of the whole barrio, youre efforts will be nothing. It is also a standard that the interventions you do for a community or for a patient are acceptable to them also. Being a public health servant is hard. Actually, all of the people working in the medical or health field are having a hard time, but if you have the passion and you maintain the desire to help people or those in need, you will also enjoy what you do. That is why, I admired Ria in the movie because she has all the connections and she has the freedom to not go back to Mulanay after the first visit if she wanted. But she continues to care for the people of the barrio and strives for the development of the barrio.The movie is related to Community Development concept because it showed all the main characteristics of community development. And it aims for the ability to learn and for the growth of the people of the barrio which was shown in the movie as its main concern.
