Mulberry Market Community Sponsorship Package FY 2013-2014 Dear Potential Community Partner, Thank you for having an interest in the local food movement and improving access to quality, locally- grown and raised food. The Mulberry Market has served as a central platform for health and nutrition education while providing an outlet for local farmers to sell their delicious products for almost two years now. Over that time, we have grown exponentially -farmers have begun to increase their production and the local community has seen positive externalities, including relationships that have been bridged from individuals to local restaurants and inspiring personal wellness. I estimate through weekly vendor reporting that our 2012 market sales totaled just over $170,000, If you are taking time to read this letter then I probably do not need to sell you on the benefits of a thriving community market where you can find everything from milk to beef to seasonal produce. Over the past few months we have been talking to many people who are looking for an outlet to support the work we are doing. Combining this interest with a sustainability plan for the Mulberry Market, we have put together a sponsorship package that provides a great value to local businesses and to ultimately support the market’s efforts to create community wellness and provide reciprocal economic benefits to downtown Macon. Community Health Works’ involvement in the market is simple; we have a mission of improving health outcomes in our service area and to utilize the market as a platform to educate and promote healthy habits in the community. Through weekly educational programming to services such as the double value Electronic Benefit Transfer program (EBT) for supplemental nutrition assistance beneficiaries, we are able to provide increased access to healthy foods and nutrition education, as well as opportunities to use the market as a community platform to support and promote local businesses and organizations. Over the next two years we have been awarded funds from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to grow the existing market, create an online buying market in north Macon, and create a sustainability plan for the market beyond the life of this grant. We recognize that for our market to be successful, we need local individual and business support. In this package you will find a wide range of support levels and we hope that one will fit you or your company’s needs. Thank you for your consideration and generosity. We look forward to growing with you on Wednesday afternoons. Sincerely, Chris Kiker Manager, Mulberry Market Director of Project Management, Community Health Works

Mulberry Market Community Sponsorship Package

FY 2013-2014

Dear Potential Community Partner,

Thank you for having an interest in the local food movement and improving access to quality, locally-

grown and raised food. The Mulberry Market has served as a central platform for health and nutrition

education while providing an outlet for local farmers to sell their delicious products for almost two years

now. Over that time, we have grown exponentially -farmers have begun to increase their production

and the local community has seen positive externalities, including relationships that have been bridged

from individuals to local restaurants and inspiring personal wellness. I estimate through weekly vendor

reporting that our 2012 market sales totaled just over $170,000,

If you are taking time to read this letter then I probably do not need to sell you on the benefits of a

thriving community market where you can find everything from milk to beef to seasonal produce. Over

the past few months we have been talking to many people who are looking for an outlet to support the

work we are doing. Combining this interest with a sustainability plan for the Mulberry Market, we have

put together a sponsorship package that provides a great value to local businesses and to ultimately

support the market’s efforts to create community wellness and provide reciprocal economic benefits to

downtown Macon.

Community Health Works’ involvement in the market is simple; we have a mission of improving health

outcomes in our service area and to utilize the market as a platform to educate and promote healthy

habits in the community. Through weekly educational programming to services such as the double value

Electronic Benefit Transfer program (EBT) for supplemental nutrition assistance beneficiaries, we are

able to provide increased access to healthy foods and nutrition education, as well as opportunities to

use the market as a community platform to support and promote local businesses and organizations.

Over the next two years we have been awarded funds from the United States Department of Agriculture

(USDA) to grow the existing market, create an online buying market in north Macon, and create a

sustainability plan for the market beyond the life of this grant.

We recognize that for our market to be successful, we need local individual and business support. In this

package you will find a wide range of support levels and we hope that one will fit you or your company’s

needs. Thank you for your consideration and generosity. We look forward to growing with you on

Wednesday afternoons.

Sincerely, Chris Kiker Manager, Mulberry Market Director of Project Management, Community Health Works

Market History

In the spring of 2009, The City Market on the Green began as a weekly initiative of the City of Macon to encourage economic

development and create a sense of community in downtown Macon, Georgia. The project received the attention of several local small

producers who were unable to expand their production due to a lack of storefront for their product. Because of this shift, there was a

huge need from local producers for a market in a high populated area. Due to a traffic study performed by the City of Macon that

showed opportunity for new growth, The City Market on the Green was moved from Saturday mornings to Wednesday afternoons and

the location was changed from Popular Street to Mulberry Street. In an effort to get more community participation, the new Mulberry

Street Market was created in April of 2011 with partnership from the City of Macon, Macon Roots, and Community Health Works.

Out of a need for stronger management and organization, Community Health Works (CHW) was asked to take over the market in

September 2011. The Mulberry Market is a producer only market operated each Wednesday from 4-7 pm giving access to fresh

produce (seasonal offerings), meats, dairy, etc. provided by local farmers. CHW increased the market’s capacity to accept credit, debit

and EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards. Due to Macon’s large low income population, CHW saw a need to partner with

Wholesome Wave Georgia in June 2011 to provide a dollar-for-dollar match for EBT recipients to allow for the access and

affordability of fresh, healthy food.

Why Partner?

In successful urban communities across the country, you will always find a local farmers market that provides citizens the opportunity

to purchase fresh and healthy food straight from farmers. A community market like this supports existing businesses, creates a positive

environment, and opens dialog about the importance of quality and healthy food. Your sponsorship not only gives you a great value on

advertising and promoting your products and services, but it ensures an organized atmosphere that will allow our local farmers market

to grow to meet the nutritional needs of our community.
