Scope of BestPaths Demo2 : Multi-vendor interoperability for VSC-based HVDC systems

The development of HVDC systems will be : gradual, growing by connecting step by step equipments from different

manufacturers

The interoperability of these equipments is a key issue for DC grids

DEMO 2 : OVERVIEW

+ ?

Targets

Explore interoperability conditions for multivendor HVDC systems toward DCgrids based on recent VSC converters.

Interoperability assessment performed on a wide variety of situations(combinations of DC topologies, AC connections, control modes, etc.) and fordifferent conditions (normal operation, fault conditions, special sequences).

Recommendations for standardization bodies and stakeholders of future DCG

Demo 2 partners :

TSOs to define the operational requirements of HVDC systems

Manufacturers to bring there best industrial solutions

Academic to contribute to interoperability studies

In very precise (and tricky!) IP conditions and rules

All partners to bring progress and build the conclusions

DEMO 2 : EXPECTED RESULTS & IMPACT

5

Expected results

To define the driving conditions of safe interoperability of multivendorequipments on a HVDC grid

To develop a two-stage Interoperability assessment process :

EMT simulation using manufacturers models for converters (EMTP-RV)

Real-time simulations with actual control replicas provided by vendors (Hypersim)

…That could be used in a real HVDC grid development process

Recommendations for standardization bodies and stakeholders of future DC Grids

DEMO 2 : ACTIVITIES

HVDC Grids simulations

Definition of the combinations of Grid topologies DC, AC and operation conditions (normal operation, fault conditions, special sequences).

Off-line simulations with manufacturers AC/DC converters models ; Specifications for AC/DC converter control system replicas : WP 4

On-line (Hardware in the loop) simulations with AC/DC converters control system replicas provided by the manufactures: WP9

For both offline and real-time simulations

Only for offline simulations

As an option (offline simulation)
