FUNDAMENTALS:- Languages are for using –for social communication, expression, and as a cognitive tool.- Learning and language learning are lifelong. Multilingualism/multiliteracy, cognition and metacognition are interwoven and develop together….

Why are multilinguals good language learners? Metalinguistic awareness in multilinguals. PhD (2001). Multilinguals are faster at learning another language the more languages they know, and perform better on implicit and explicit tests of cognition about grammar.

Strategic processing in grammar learning: Do multilinguals use more strategies? ? (Kemp, 2007)The more languages the 144 participants knew, a) the greater the number of grammar learning strategies they used, b) the more frequently they used them, and c) the greater the number of participants who added their own grammar learning strategies.

What is multilingualism? (Kemp, 2009) Defining multilingualism. In Aronin, L. & Hufeisen, B. (Eds.) The Exploration of Multilingualism: Development of research on L3, multilingualism and multiple language acquisition. Amsterdam: John Benjamins: 11-26

Advising 100 master’s students on their dissertations (qualitative and quantitative), including multilingual learners and:-translanguaging-online language learning-multilingual identity-willingness to communicate-teaching multilingual teachers-testing proficiency-translanguaging in the classroom-implicit and explicit processing of language.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS: How do multilinguals learn and process their languages? How does cognition about language develop in multilinguals? How can we test cognition and language in multilinguals? What strategies do multilinguals use when they learn new languages? What advice do multilinguals give other language learners?

How do developing bilingual school students in China use wikis to develop their English writing? Collaborative wiki writing gives language learners opportunities for personalised participatory peer-feedback (Kemp, Li, Li, Ma, Ren, Tian, Wang, Xie, You, Zhang, Zhu, & Zhuang 2019).
