Winter beings in December, and ends in March. Winters usually are cooler and wet. It is rainy and snowy. We may also see, freezing rain, sleet, and hail. Some parts of Oregon, and the USA, and the world get huge amounts of snow during the winter. Winter is when earth’s North Pole is tilted farther away from the sun than at any other time of the year. While we in the United States have winter, Australia, South Africa and the southern parts of South America will have summer. Because the weather continues to cool for about another month after the shortest days, the coldest weather actually arrives after the winter solstice. For most of the Northern Hemisphere, January and February are typically the coldest months.

Spring begins in the month of March, and ends in June. This is when the sun sits directly above the equator on its apparent trip northward. Of course this sun isn’t moving; Earth is. As Earth revolves around the sun, the top half, called the Northern Hemisphere, becomes tilted more toward the sun as winter turns to spring. Meanwhile the bottom half, the Southern Hemisphere, becomes tilted more away from the sun. So it is autumn for people in Australia and the southern parts of Africa and South America. Spring in Oregon, is usually very mild and very rainy. There have been times when we have seen snow in the spring. This is the time of year, when you see lots of umbrellas and rain boots. This is also when the animals come out from hibernation (hiding during the winter) and the flowers and trees start budding and blooming.

The leaves begin to change color, and fall to the ground. In fall, we celebrate Halloween, and Thanksgiving. This is the time of year, when you see lots of umbrellas and rain boots. The weather begins to change toward the winter weather, and starts to get rainy. We see animals preparing for the cold winter months by some birds flying south (where it is warmer – because they are having their summer during our winter) and other animals begin storing food, and going into hibernation or hiding.
