IntroductionThis section contains important information regarding MultiTemp IV ThermostaticCirculator and this operating instructions.

Read this before usingMultiTemp IV ThermostaticCirculator

All users must read Chapter 2 Safety instructions, on page 13 before installing, using ormaintaining the system.

Do not operate MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator in any other way than describedin the user documentation. If you do, you may be exposed to hazards that can lead topersonal injury, you may cause damage to the equipment, and no warranty will apply.

Intended use of MultiTemp IVThermostatic Circulator

MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is a thermostatic circulator for electrophoresisequipment. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator supplies both coolant for high voltagetechniques and provides temperature control at higher temperature (e.g. 60 °C) whenperforming DNA sequencing.

MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is not suitable for operation in a potentially explosiveatmosphere or for handling flammable liquids.

WARNINGDo not operate MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator in any otherway than described in MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator oper-ating instructions.

General precautions

WARNINGPerform a risk assessment for any risks due to the process or pro-cess environment. Evaluate the effects the use of MultiTemp IVThermostatic Circulator and processes have on the classificationof the hazardous area. The process might cause the area to in-crease or the zone classification to change. Implement the risk re-duction measures needed, including use of personal protectionequipment.

WARNINGThe customer must ensure that all installation, maintenance,operation and inspection is carried out by qualified personnel whoare adequately trained, understand and adhere to local regulationsand the operating instructions, and have a thorough knowledgeof MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator and the entire process.

CAUTION

Do not handle or drain the system unless you are sure the fluid isat a safe temperature (20°C to 55°C).

Installing and moving

WARNINGAll energy isolation devices should be located in a readily accessiblelocation.

WARNINGThe unit does not have handles. Take into account the unit's weight,66 pounds (30 kilograms), when unpacking and transporting. Werecommend two people lift the unit from the bottom.

WARNINGThe unit is not designed to be floor mounted.

WARNINGMake sure that the system is placed on a stable flat bench withadequate space for ventilation.

WARNINGAccess to power switch and power cord. The power switch mustalways be easy to access. The power cord must always be easy todisconnect.

CAUTION

Ensure that all tubing, hoses and cables are placed so that the riskfor tripping accidents is minimized.

CAUTION

MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is designed for indoor useonly.

Power supply

WARNINGProtective ground. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator must al-ways be connected to a grounded power outlet.

WARNINGDisconnect power. Always disconnect power from the instrumentbefore replacing any component on the instrument, unless statedotherwise in the user documentation.

System operation

WARNINGSafe distance. Always maintain a safe distance fromMultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator during drainage or other ac-tivities that may involve splashing.

WARNINGOperating limits. Never exceed the operating limits stated in thisoperating instruction and on the system label. If MultiTemp IVThermostatic Circulator is operated outside these limits, theequipment may be damaged and bodily injury or death may occur.

WARNINGLeakage of refrigerant may cause oxygen deficiency in an enclosedarea. Refer to information on the instrument´s rating label and themost current MSDS for the refrigerant. Make sure that sufficientroom ventilation is available.

WARNINGBefore using any fluid refer to the manufacturer’s MSDS and ECsafety data sheets for handling precautions. Ensure that thereservoir overflow located on the rear of the MultiTemp IVThermostatic Circulator is connected to a suitable drain.

NOTICE

The MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator's refrigeration system issealed and does not require lockout/tagout. Remove any isolationdevices before starting the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator.

NOTICE

All electrical energy sources for the MultiTemp IV ThermostaticCirculator are provided by the user.

Maintenance

WARNINGThere must not be any residues of harmful substances left duringmaintenance. Make sure that the MultiTemp IV ThermostaticCirculator is properly cleaned before maintenance. Cleaning shouldbe documented in the Decontamination report.

This symbol indicates the product contains hazardous materials inexcess of the limits established by the Chinese standardSJ/T11363-2006 Requirements for Concentration Limits for CertainHazardous Substances in Electronic Information Products. The numberin the symbol is the Environment-friendly Use Period (EFUP), whichindicates the period during which the toxic or hazardous substancesor elements contained in electronic information products will not leakor mutate under normal operating conditions so that the use of suchelectronic information products will not result in any severeenvironmental pollution, any bodily injury or damage to any assets.The unit of the period is “Year”.

In order to maintain the declared EFUP, the product shall be operatednormally according to the instructions and environmental conditionsas defined in the product manual, and periodic maintenance schedulesspecified in Product Maintenance Procedures shall be followed strictly.

Settings- Application Settings

Application Settings is used to view/adjust the controller's five Setpoints and RealTem-perature Adjustments (RTA) enable/disable the alarms, change the fluid type, set thepump speed, configure the interfaces (optional), set the clock, turn the timer on or off,and turn auto restart and energy savings on or off. Refer to Section5.3.1 Viewing/AdjustingApplication Settings, on page 55.

Settings - Display Options

Display Options is used to view/adjust the controller's displayed Language, the Temper-ature Units, The Temperature Resolution, the Display Contrast and the Display Delay.Refer to Section 5.3.2 Viewing/Adjusting Display Options, on page 64.

4.1 Site requirements

IntroductionThis section outlines the site requirements for MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator.

WARNINGMultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator does not have handles. Takeinto account the unit's weight, 66 pounds (30 kilograms), whenunpacking and transporting. It is recommended that two peoplelift the unit from the bottom.

NOTICE

Never place MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator in a locationwhere excessive heat, moisture, inadequate ventilation, or corrosivematerials are present.

NOTICE

MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator should be left in an uprightposition at room temperature (~25°C) for 24 hours before starting.This will ensure the lubrication oil has drained back into the com-pressor.

Space requirementsThe unit is designed for continuous operation and for indoor use. Also, it is not designedto be floor-mounted.

Allow space on the laboratory bench for access to the rear and sides of theinstrument.

• Temperatures below 10ºC and above 40ºC

The MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator requires clean air for proper operation. Airenters from the rear of the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator and exits through thesides and front.

The MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator's design allows blocking of any two sides (exceptrear) without affecting rated load. The ambient temperature is reduced by 3°C if twosides are blocked.

4.2 Electrical requirements

IntroductionThis section outlines the electrical requirements for MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator.

WARNINGAccess to power switch and power cord. The power switch mustalways be easy to access. The power cord must always be easy todisconnect.

WARNINGProtective ground. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator must al-ways be connected to a grounded power outlet.

WARNINGDo not use MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator if it is not workingproperly, or if it has suffered any damage, for example:

• damage to the power cord or its plug

• damage caused by dropping the equipment

• damage caused by splashing liquid onto it

The construction of the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator provides protection againstthe risk of electrical shock by grounding appropriate metal parts. The protection will notfunction unless the power cord is connected to a properly grounded outlet.

The MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator unit is intended for use on a dedicated outlet.All units are equipped with a C14 main power inlet and a 20 A circuit protector.

If the circuit protector trips, allow the unit to cool before resetting the circuitprotector. Restart the unit. Contact us if it activates again.

Note:

Refer to the nameplate on the rear, upper-left-hand corner of the unit for specific elec-trical requirements. Voltage deviations of ± 10% are permissible.

The wall outlet must be rated as suitable for the total power consumption of the unit.

Never connect the process fluid lines to your facility water supplyor any pressurized liquid source.

CAUTION

Ensure the tubing you select meets your maximum temperatureand pressure requirements.

WARNINGFlammable liquids. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is notapproved to handle flammable fluids.

WARNINGHandling and disposal of liquids other than water should be donein accordance with the fluid manufacturers specification and/orthe MSDS for the fluid used.

WARNINGThe user is always responsible for the fluid used. Never use corro-sive or flammable fluids with this unit.

WARNINGEnsure, when selecting the heat transfer fluid, that no toxic gasescan be generated. Inflammable gases can build up over the fluidduring usage.

CAUTION

Always adjust the unit's software to the fluid used.

NOTICE

Water/ laboratory grade ethylene glycol mixtures require top-offswith pure water, otherwise the percentage of laboratory gradeethylene glycol will increase resulting in high viscosity and poorperformance.

Do not use bath fluids that:

• are very highly viscous (much higher than 30 mPas at the respective working tem-perature)

• have corrosive characteristics or

• tend to break down at high temperatures

For fluid selection consider application requirements, operating temperature range,material compatibility, safety concerns, and environmental issues. Refer to Chapter 8Reference information, on page 85 for suitable fluids.

5.1 Set up MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator unit

IntroductionThis section describes the steps that should be performed to set up MultiTemp IVThermostatic Circulator.

Before the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is taken into operation, make sure thatall procedures in the Chapter 4 Installation, on page 32 have been performed:

NOTICE

MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator should be left in an uprightposition at room temperature (~25°C) for 24 hours before starting.This will ensure the lubrication oil has drained back into the com-pressor.

NOTICE

Before starting the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator, doublecheck all electrical and plumbing connections.

Start upDo not run MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator until fluid is added to the unit. Haveextra fluid on hand. If MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator does not start refer to SectionChapter 7 Troubleshooting, on page 80.

If this temperature on the Start/Status Displays does not accurately reflectthe actual temperature in the reservoir, an RTA can be applied. The RTA canbe set ±10°C (±18°F).

As an example, if the unit's temperature is stabilized and displaying 20°Cbut a calibrated reference thermometer reads 20.5°C, the RTA should be setto -0.5°C. After you enter a RTA value allow unit to stabilize before verifyingthe temperature in the bath. NOTE If display accuracy is required, we recom-mend repeating this procedure at various setpoint temperatures and on aregular basis.

IntroductionThis section describes the steps to view system messages, system run time, systemconfiguration, reset password and PID Tuning.

The PID regulates heating and cooling to maintain set temperature. Cool PIDis only usedwhen energy savingmode is enabled. Normally the PID parametersdoes not need to be changed and can be left at factory settings. If PID param-eters have been changed they can be reset to factory defaults.

Using any other means to shut the unit down can reduce the lifeof the compressor.

RestartingWhen quickly restarting, the compressor may take up to 10 minutes before itstarts to operate. The MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator cycling should belimited to 8 times/hour.

6.1 User maintenance schedule

IntroductionThe maintenance recommendations are different depending on normal or frequent useof MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator. Note that the recommendation may not applyto your specific use of the system. The system owner is solely responsible for establishingapplicable routines for periodic maintenance.

Maintenance

NOTICE

Clean the unit's surface with a soft cloth and warm water only.

The table below describes maintenance actions required for each component.

For proper operation, the unit needs to pull air through a con-denser. A build up of dust or debris on the fins of the condenserwill lead to a loss of cooling capacity.

Blow compressed air on the condenser to clean it.

Check the fluid level, concentration and pH on a regular basis.Change the fluid if it is discolored..

Fluid Maintenance

As required, clean the sight tube using a small soft brush.Sight Tube

The unit's external hoses and clamps should be inspected andtightened on at least a semiannual basis.

Testing the Safety FeaturesThe safety feature for high temperature protection must be checked at regular intervals.The frequency depends on the unit’s designated application and the heat transfer fluidused.

High temperature protection

• Using a flat-head screw driver, set a cut-off temperature that is lower than the desiredsetpoint temperature.

• Switch on the circulator and ensure the unit shuts down at the set cut-off tempera-ture.

• If the unit does not shut down have the unit checked by a qualified technician.

• The pump motor overloaded. The pump's internalovertemperature overcurrent device will shut off thepump causing the flow to stop. This can be causedby low fluid, debris in system, operating unit in a highambient temperature condition or excessively con-fined space. Allow time for the motor to cool down.

• Make sure supply voltage matches the unit's name-plate rating ±10%

Unit will not circulate process fluid

• Verify the setpoint

• Make sure the condenser is free of dust and debris

• Check the fluid concentration

• Ensure unit installation complies with the site require-ments in Site Requirements.

• If the temperature continues to rise, make sure yourapplication's heat load does not exceed the ratedspecifications

• Check for high thermal gradients (e.g., the applicationload is being turned on and off or rapidly changing)

8.5 Suitable fluids

Suitable fluidsThe following table lists the suitable fluids. All heat transfer fluids are supplied with anEC Safety Data Sheet.

Normal tap water leads to calcareous deposits necessi-tating frequent unit decalcification, see table on next page.

5°C to 80°C — DistilledWater or Deionized Wa-ter (up to 3 MΩ-cm) Calcium tends to deposit itself on the heating element.

The heating capacity is reduced and service life shortened.

Below 5°C, water has to be mixed with a laboratory gradeethylene glycol. The amount of laboratory grade ethyleneglycol added should cover a temperature range 5°C lowerthan the operating temperature of the particular applica-tion. This will prevent the water/ laboratory grade ethyleneglycol from gelling (freezing) near the evaporating coil.

-10°C to 80°C — 50/50Water with laboratorygrade ethylene glycol(CAS# 107-21-1, EEC#203-473-3)

50% laboratory grade ethylene glycol is the maximumrecommendation. Excess laboratory grade ethylene glycoldeteriorates the temperature accuracy due to its highviscosity.

Unfavorably high total ionized solids (TIS) can accelerate the rate of galvanic corrosion.These contaminants can function as electrolytes which increase the potential for galvaniccell corrosion and lead to localized corrosion such as pitting. Eventually, the pitting willbecome so extensive that refrigerant will leak into the water reservoir.

As an example, raw water in the United States averages 171 ppm (of NaCl). The recom-mended level for use in a water system is between 0.5 to 5.0 ppm (of NaCl).

Recommendation: Initially fill the tank with distilled or deionized water. Do not use un-treated tap water as the total ionized solids level may be too high. This will reduce theelectrolytic potential of the water and prevent or reduce the galvanic corrosion observed.
