What’s Been Happening?

Thank you for making 2016 a fantastic year for the Munch & Move team. Together the 6 Munch & Move buddies in South Western Sydney were able to provide support to more than 400 early childhood education services in the area to promote and encourage the 6 key messages:• Encourage and support breastfeeding• Choose water as a drink• Eat more fruit and vegetables• Choose healthier snacks• Get active each day• Turn off the television and computer and get active

We had a fantastic turnout at our workshops:• 3 Fundamental Movement Skill workshops with almost 80 participants• 3 Cooks workshops with 80 participants• 4 Large Munch & Move in-services with more than 200 participants

Delivered a lot of new resources:• FMS cards for babies and toddlers• FMS cards for pre-schoolers• Wombat Wobble CD• Health Eating Experience Manual• Jack’s FUNtastic Day book, educator resource and flashcardsAnd conducted more than 50 menu reviews.

Without your support and commitment in encouraging healthy growth and development, we would continue to see the rate of overweight and obesity rising.

Keep up the great work! We look forward to working with you again in 2017!

San Marino World of Learning in Prestons program fundamental movement skills by highlighting the skills in their daily program and weekly curriculum, to allow their students to explore each skill. Skills are programmed on a weekly basis, using the pictured table as a way of communicating their program to parents.

The educators express that the children have a growing interest in the fundamental movement skills and have seen improvements in their abilities with practice. The educators use the Munch & Move FMS resource Franky and Friends to distinguish between the movements and to demonstrate the actions to the children. They also look to Franky and Friends for inspiration when incorporating the skills, such as using the skill of running in ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf?’ The educators also allow children to use their own imaginations when coming up with games that incorporate the skills.

The educators reflect on these skills in their daily journal that can be accessed by parents. They link each game to the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Framework.

Q&A - Ask a Buddy!

As Munch & Move buddies, we often receive questions about healthy eating and physical activity. This year we would like to share some of the questions we have received from educators. We hope that our answers might help you with incorporating Munch & Move into your program one step at a time.

Please feel free to send in your Munch & Move questions to [email protected] for a chance to be featured in our next newsletter!

Q: What type of baked goods can be included on my centre’s menu?

A:Caring for Children guidelines recommend that baked goods should be fruit or vegetable based and made with wholemeal flour. This means they pack a little extra goodness like fibre, iron and some vitamins for the children. You may like to try the baked good recipes in Caring for Children such as the Date Loaf and Banana Bread. While baked goods provide variety, they should not dominate the menu. Always aim to include plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and high fibre grains throughout the day.
