    History

    Intercontinental and Toyota Cup

Between 1960 and 1968, the International Cup was a competition endorsed by UEFA and CONMEBOL andcontested between the winners of the European Champions Cup and the South American Copa Libertadores. The system of play was a home-and-away series, decided by points only (the same format used by CONMEBOLto determine the winner of the Copa Libertadores final until 1987). Because of this format, a third match wasneeded when both teams were tied on points.

From 1969 to 1979, the Intercontinental Cup continued as a two-leg competition between the UEFA and the

CONMEBOL club champions. However, it adopted the European standard method to decide the winner byadding the goals of both matches to the aggregate score.

As of 1980 and until 2004, the competition was held as a single match in Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan. It wascalled the Toyota Cup, named after its sponsor.

    FIFA Club World Cup

The firstFIFA Club World Cupwas held in 2000 in Brazil with the participation of the club champions of all sixconfederations (AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA). In addition to those six teams, twoadditional competitors were invited: Real Madrid from Spain as the Toyota Cup winner of 1998 and the Brazilian

host team, Corinthians, who went on to win the trophy.

In 2005 the Toyota Cup merged with the FIFA Club World Cup and ever since this competition has been playedunder the auspices of FIFA and between the club champions from the 6 Confederations (UEFAs andCONMEBOLs representative entering the competition in the semifinals). In 2007, the Japanese league winnerwas to be included to represent the host country but since a Japanese team won the AFC Champions League, the highest placed non Japanese team of the AFC Champions League played the play-off for quarter-finals withthe OFC representative.

    Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma F.C. (KOR)

Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma F.C. will represent Asia at the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup by virtue of winning the AFCChampions League. The side from Korea Republic beat Iranian side Zob Ahan 3-1 in the final held on 13November, 2010.

The pastOver the past two decades, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma F.C. have emerged as the K-Leagues dominant force.Twice during this period, between 1993 and 95 and 2001 and 03, they have cemented their pre-eminentposition by stringing together three successive domestic championships.Founded in 1989, it was the clubs first-ever coach, Park Jong-Hwan, who established the Chunmas (Pegasus)unique blend of attacking football and watertight defence. Seongnams first international successes came in themid-1990s, when they first won the Asian Club Championship in 1995 before going on to claim the Asian SuperCup and the Afro-Asian Club Championship the following year.

The presentFurther conquests followed, but after finishing runners-up in the AFC Champions League in 2004, whensurrendered a 3-1 first leg advantage against Al Ittihad by losing the return 5-0, Seongnam appeared to belosing some of their lustre. They did go on to win their seventh national title under the guidance of Kim Hak-Bum two years later, but this influential tactician could not keep the Chunma from falling exiting the continentalchampionship at the semi-final stage in 2007. Last year brought about a change in the dugout as former captainShin Tae-Yong took charge, and the 40-year-old silenced his critics by leading a rejuvenated side to second placein the K-League and the final of the Korean FA Cup in his first season at the helm. Shins men then went on totake the Asian stage by storm in 2010, with new recruits Mauricio Molina, Dzenan Radoncic and skipper SasaOgnenovski playing pivotal roles as Seongnam clinched the Asian title and, in doing so, secured a place at the

    FIFA Club World Cup.

The futureWhile Seongnam will make their debut on the world stage at UAE 2010, their captain Ognenovski has alreadyexperienced the finals two years ago. Ive played there with Adelaide United [at Japan 2008], the giant centre-half told FIFA.com. Its a fantastic tournament to be involved in. Even for the younger players, it will be anamazing experience and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to the Club World Cup and play against the topfive clubs in the world. (source: fifa.com)

    TP Mazembe Englebert (COD)

TP Mazembe Englebert from DR Congo will make their second consecutive appearance at a FIFA Club WorldCup after successfully defending their CAF African Champions League title with a 6-1 aggregate victory overEsperance from Tunisia on 13 November. They will represent the Mother Continent at the FIFA Club World Cup

UAE 2010.The pastIf winning the CAF Champions League last year was, in itself, an admirable feat for Tout Puissant MazembeEnglebert of Congo DR, their successful defence of the title this season was even more impressive. Nor was it thefirst time the Lubumbashi club has lifted the prestigious trophy in successive years: their original back-to-backtriumphs came in 1967 and 1968, and were followed by runner's-up spots in 1969 and 1970. TP Mazembeadded an African Cup Winners Cup to their list of honours in 1980, further enhancing their continentalpedigree. And though it would be almost 30 years before Les Corbeaux(The Crows) again won an African title, they continued to assert themselves at domestic level. Indeed, five of their ten national championships weresecured during the last decade, as was one of their five national cups.

    The present

In reaching the summit of African club football in 2009, TP Mazembe earned themselves a maiden appearace atthe FIFA Club World Cup. Their players clearly enjoyed the experience and now return to Abu Dhabi for a secondbite of the cherry. During this seasons quest for a second successive Champions League title, the Congolese sideexperienced many memorable highs, including a stunning 5-0 demolition of Esperance Sportive de Tunis in thefirst leg of the continental final in Lubumbashi. There were also disappointing lows, like the 3-0 defeat theysuffered at the hands of the same Tunisian opponents during the group phase, the year-long suspensionimposed on prolific striker Tresor Mabi Mputu and the departure of coach Diego Garzitto. Former Senegalinternational Lamine NDiaye took up the reins in September, instilling an efficient and confident style of playthat was there for all to see during both legs of the recent final.

The futureThe four-time African champions will have one advantage over some of their potential adversaries at the FIFAClub World Cup 2010; that of experience. Having come up short in their maiden appearance last December, first

losing 2-1 to Pohang Steelers at the quarter-final stage, then succumbing 3-2 to Auckland City in the match forfifth place, pressure-induced stage fright should be less of a factor for Mazembe this time around. The majorityof the squad that took part in the 2009 adventure are still with the club, and they will be out to prove they havelearned from that campaign. Also of significance is the new mindset brought about by NDiaye. Theyre adifferent side now, points out club chairman Moise Katumbi, adding, Every player wants to be out on thepitch, fighting for the team and winning games. Lamine NDiaye has fostered a real fighting spirit. (source:fifa.com)

    F.C. Internazionale Milano (ITA)

Italy's F.C. Internazionale Milano defeated Bayern Munich of Germany in the UEFA Champions League final 2-0on 22 May, 2010, at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, and they will represent Europe at the 2010 FIFA ClubWorld Cup.

The pastEven before 2010s historic treble, when they won the Italian league, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA ChampionsLeague, Inter Milan were already giants of Italian and European football. The two-time winners of theIntercontinental Cup are the only side never to have dropped out of Serie A, and were also the team thatpopularised the famous catenaccio defensive system. Over the years, legendary coaches like Helenio Herrera andJose Mourinho have combined with stalwarts such as Giuseppe Meazza and Javier Zanetti to make I Nerazzurrione of the worlds most successful teams.

    The present

Inter owe their return to the summit of European football after 45 years to the magic touch of Mourinho. ThePortuguese coach was able to take a group of super-talented individuals and mould them into a united, almostunbeatable team that knocked out the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona on the way to the final, before dispensingwith a previously unstoppable Bayern Munich side. The key trio of Lucio, Wesley Sneijder and Diego Milito wereall recruited in summer of 2009, and the investment has now been rewarded with qualification for the FIFA ClubWorld Cup UAE 2010. Mourinho has moved on to Real Madrid, but his shoes have been filled by Rafael Benitez, giving the latter a chance to claim the prize that eluded him in 2005, when his Liverpool side succumbed 1-0 inthe final to Brazils Sao Paulo.

The futureWith five consecutive Italian titles under their belt, Inter go into the competition as favourites. Perhaps mostimportantly, they have managed to hold on to their best players, including the Dutch star Wesley Sneijder. TheFIFA World Cup finalist has made a win in Abu Dhabi one of his priorities. My heart is in Milan, he said in

the run-up to the 2010/11 season. With Inter last season, I won everything in sight. But there are some greatprizes still to be won, like the European Super Cup, the Italian Super Cup and the Club World Cup. (source:fifa.com)

    CONCAFAC

Club de Futbol Pachuca (MEX)CONCACAF Champions League 2010The CONCACAF zone (North, Central America and the Caribbean) will send one participant to the 2010 FIFAClub World Cup, the winner of the CONCACAF Champions League final on 28 April. Pachuca defeated CruzAzul on away goals in the final.

The pastAfter having spent much of their existence playing lower division football, the 21st century has seen Mexicanside Pachuca become one of the most successful clubs both domestically and in the CONCACAF region. In fact, this will be the Latin Americans third appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup. Their two previous participationsdid not live long in the memory, however, with a shock quarter-final defeat by Tunisias Etoile Sportive du Sahelin 2007 and losses to Ecuadorian side Liga Universitaria de Quito and Japans Gamba Osaka in 2008 testimonyto missed opportunities.

The presentCould it be a case of third time lucky for Los Tuzos? They are certainly hopeful that the experience gained inthose previous tournaments will stand them in good stead, as they look to become the first-ever CONCACAFteam to reach the final of the prestigious global event. To achieve this goal, they will arrive in the UAE with afinely-balanced squad boasting both home-grown talent and high-profile foreign players. It would be noexaggeration to suggest that this is the best Pachuca side to have qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup, andthat their desire to make a mark on the competition is keener than ever.

The futureI promise that well keep winning thats our plan and my personal goal. Id like us to arrive at the Club WorldCup in the best possible form, as success in the competition is crucial to the club. Those were the words of newPachuca coach Pablo Marini upon his appointment in August of this year, and they echo the ambition of a groupof players who have always dreamed of international recognition, but are aware that two glorious chances have

already passed them by. (source: fifa.com)

Hekari United F.C. (PNG)Oceanias representative at the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup is the winner of the OFC O-League final played on 2May 2010. Papua New Guinea's Hekari United F.C. defeated New Zealand's Waitakere United 4-2 on aggregate, winning 3-0 in Port Moresby and losing the second leg 2-1 in Auckland.

The pastHekari United FC have enjoyed a meteoric rise from amateur football to continental champions in the space of

just seven years since their foundation in 2003. Originally known as PRK Souths United FC, the team from thecapital Port Moresby enjoyed instant success, moving into the top flight within two years. The club immediatelybecame a dominant force, and have won all four editions of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer Leaguesince the current format of the national league was introduced in 2006.

The presentUnder Solomon Islander coach Jerry Allen, Hekari were competitive in their maiden tilt at the OFC O-League in2009, finishing fourth. The following year, the club continued its policy of acquiring some of the Pacifics bestplayers from the likes of Fiji and the Solomons and, along with some of PNGs finest talent, it proved a highly

successful formula. The result was that Hekari overturned the form book and created history in May bybecoming the first team to break the stranglehold held on the continental competition by Australian and NewZealand clubs. The aggregate win over Kiwis Waitakere United was set up by a first-leg win at home in front of15,000 fans, believed to be a national record attendance.

With the domestic competition taking a lengthy break prior to its re-start in October, Hekari continued theirbuild-up for the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2010 with a tour of northern Australia in July. They also have threematches of the new league O-League season scheduled prior to their arrival in Abu Dhabi.

The futureSince the O-League triumph in Auckland, Fijis Alvin Singh and local player Tau Winnie have joined the four-timenational champions. The pastBoasting an enviable domestic record that includes three Brazilian Serie A titles one of them attained with anunbeaten record one Copa do Brasil and 39 state championships, Internacional are also a force to be reckonedwith on the continental stage.

Over the last four seasons O Colorado have won all Latin American footballs major club titles, namely the CopaSudamericana, the Recopa Sudamericana and, on two occasions, the coveted Copa Libertadores.

Yet the most significant moment in this golden era in the clubs history came in 2006 when, thanks to a goalfrom Adriano, they beat the mighty Barcelona in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, a tournament thatwitnessed the emergence of one Alexandre Pato. Inter have maintained their consistency on the internationalscene since then, going on to beat Inter Milan in the final of the 2008 Dubai Cup.

The presentThe Porto Alegre side invested a significant sum of money in their ultimately successful bid to win theLibertadores for a second time, bringing in Uruguayan coach Jorge Fossati and a clutch of new signings. Fossatitook the side, led by Argentinian midfielder Andres DAlessandro, through to the semi -finals only to be replacedby Celso Roth after some poor results and criticism from the fans.

Making the most of the break for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, Roth dipped into the transfermarket and brought home three heroes of the 2006 team: Renan, Tinga and Rafael Sobis. Revitalised, Inter sawoff compatriots Sao Paulo in the last four before lifting the trophy for a second time when they beat MexicosGuadalajara 5-3 on aggregate in the final.

The futureSemi-final victory over Sao Paulo guaranteed Internacional a place at the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2010 as

Guadalajara, in their capacity as a Copa Libertadores invitee and member of CONCACAF, were ineligible torepresent CONMEBOL. Having held on to the core of the team, the Brazilians are banking on the talent ofDAlessandro and Giuliano and the experience of Bolivar, Kleber and Pablo Guinazu to make an impact in AbuDhabi, where they will go in search of world title number two. Al-Wahda Sports Club (UAE)As current champions of the UAE domestic top flight, Abu Dhabi-based outfit Al Wahda will represent the hostnation at the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup.

The pastAl Wahda Sports Club was officially formed in 1984 following a merger of Abu Dhabi clubs, and just one yearlater, the new side won the Al Etihad Union Cup. The first of four league titles followed in 1999, before theclub secured the UAE President Cup in 2000 and a UAE Super Cup win two years later. In 1999, the Abu Dhabiteam made their first appearance in the Asian Cup Winners Cup, falling at the first hurdle, but their best-everperformance in the AFC Champions League followed in 2007, when they reached the semi-finals.

The presentAfter a barren spell of five years, Al Wahda once again claimed top spot in the UAE League in 2010, this timeunder the guidance of Austrian coach Josef Hickersberger. The Brazilian trio of Fernando Baiano, Magrao and

Pinga also played a huge part, with Baiano and Pinga scoring 30 goals between them, more than half the teamstotal. Al Wahdas title triumph ensured they become only the second team from the UAE to play in the FIFA ClubWorld Cup. They follow in the footsteps of Al Ahli, and the Abu Dhabi club will be hoping to go further thantheir Dubai-based rivals, who were knocked out in the first round last year.

The futureAfter winning the league title, Hickersberger decided to part company with the club to take up the post ofBahrain manager. The club enlisted Romanian Laszlo Boloni as coach, but after a poor run of results, Bolonideparted to be replaced by former SC Internacional Head Coach Tite. However an offer to return to Brazil andtake up the hotseat at Corinthians means Hickersberger is back at the helm.
