Mold di scovered at parish court house A re ent mold study funded by the Federal Emer gency Management Agency(FEMA )disco vereds ignifica nt amounts of mold throughou the historic St. Bernard Parish courthouse on St. Bernard Highway. In order to treat and remove the mold, the courthouse will h ve to be vacated. Parish officials are still f ma li zi ng d et ai ls f or w he re t o h ou se courthous e staf f and acti vities for wha t cou ld be a year- long relocation . The storied courthouse sat in flo odwaters for weeks after Hurricane Kat rina.After the storm,the courthouse was never fully remediated for mold. The recent mold discovery came as p ar t o f a l en gt hy p la nn in g p ro ce ss f or a FEMA-funded reno ation of the building. The courthouse has been the c en te r o f t he p ar is h's j ud ic ia l sy st em since its completion in 1939. The courthouse isthe work of Solis Seifert, w o also designed the state c ap it ol b ui ld in g i n B at on R ou ge a nd Char ity Hospita l in New Orleans.

Oil refinery in Meraux reported a

mirky, pungent discharge in the 20Arpent Canal following the historic

downpours Dec. 12. Reports indicate

the discharge was an oil-water mix

'released from the refinery due to the

heavy rains.

The Louisiana Department of

Environment Quality was notified

of the issue the following morning.

Cleanup crews worked Dec. 13-14 to

remove the oily residue from the canal.

Residents reported allergic reactions to

the strong chemical smell.

The refinery is allowed to discharge

storm water during rain events, but

a spokesman for the refinery did not

immediately know why oil had mixedwith rain water.

Suzanne Kneale, a Meraux

resident who is a member of the group

Concerned Citizens Around Murphy,

spoke to the St.BernardParish Council

Dec. 15on the matter, insisting that the

refmery identify "sustainable solutions"

for coping with severe rain events.Representatives from Murphy were

asked to give a report to the council

Dec. 15 but declined, citing pendinglitigation. Murphy representatives

reported to parish officials the refinery

was in the process of implementing a

corrective action plan.

A representative from Murphy wasnot available for comment.

an agency dedicated to promoting

policies and candidates for the benefit

recently named St. Bernard Parish
