Community Service Obligation This school has adopted a requirement that students receiving fee waivers (other than textbook fees) perform community service if reasonably possible. Your student will have several options from which to choose in completing the community service requirement. Those options include:

Community Service at the school, such as tutorial assistance to other students, or service outside of regular school hours as a student aide to school staff.

Community service in the community

When special needs require, community service in the home.

Students may not provide community service to their own employers, nor may they fulfill a community service requirement by working for a commercial establishment other than a facility such as a nursing home or hospital where volunteer services are commonly provided. Community service requirements must be appropriate to the age, physical condition, and maturity of the student; must be conducted in such a way that students are not subjected to embarrassment, ridicule, or humiliation; and must not provide direct private benefit to school employees or their families. In addition, community service requirements must avoid excessive burdens on students and families and give proper consideration to a student’s educational and transportation needs and other responsibilities. If circumstances arise which make it too difficult for a student to complete a community service assignment, notify the school principal immediately to determine what adjustments should be made. Failure to complete a community service assignment may result in denial of fee waivers. Community service hour requirements will be computed using a formula based upon not less than the minimum hourly wage. For example, if a fee-waiver eligible student is assessed $100 for school fees and the school policy is based upon an $8 per hour community service credit, then the student may be required to perform up to 12.5 hours of community service. Community service students will not be considered to be employees of those for whom they provide the service, and no money will be paid to the students or to the school in return for community service. Regular employees who work in places where students perform community services may not be replaced, nor may their hours be reduced, as a result of the student’s community service activities. Community service is intended to supplement existing services, not replace that which is already being done by others. STUDENT PARKING LOT REGULATIONS Parking on Murray High Campus is a privilege, not a right. Parking regulations must be observed by all who park on campus in order to provide for safe and efficient traffic movement, and to maintain access for fire and medical vehicles. Only students with valid parking passes are allowed to park in student parking areas. Students may obtain a parking pass by showing a valid driver’s license, completing their parking application form and paying their parking fee. Vehicles on campus without a parking permit or parking illegally in any way will receive a $10.00 fine. The second violation will result in a $15.00 fine and the third violation will result in a $20.00 fine and loss of the parking pass and on-campus parking privileges. A student parking on campus illegally may have their pass revoked or their vehicle towed.

MURRAY CITY TRAFFIC ORDINANCE: SEC 10.08.030 PARKING ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

Student shall park in designated student parking areas. Parking permits are required and must be displayed on the rear-

view mirror. All cars must register and display such a permit. All vehicles shall be parked inside marked parking stalls. Parking

Students may not park in designated faculty or visitor parking areas.

Students may not park in the service and bus entrance.

PARKING PERMITS A parking pass application (available on-line, or in the main office) must be completed to purchase a parking permit. The application requires a parent signature and car insurance information. Parking permits for the school year may be purchased for $10.00 during registration or at any time during the school year.

Search and Seizure School authorities are charged with protecting the health and safety of all students and promoting the effective operation of the schools. The following search and seizure guidelines shall be observed to assure the privacy of individuals and the safety and welfare of all students. (This is in accordance with the Policies, Rules, and Regulations of the Murray City Board of Education PS 435.)

Students. A Student shall be free from searches unless there is reasonable cause to believe that something is concealed that may be of immediate danger to the student or to other students or the staff. School officials may request a student to remove all items from pockets or other personal property.

Lockers. Lockers remain the property of the school and are provided to students for their convenience. Students should be aware their assigned locker will be jointly accessible to the student and school officials and may be subject to search at the discretion of school officials.

Vehicles. If a school official has reasonable cause to believe the contents of a vehicle threaten to affect adversely the safety, health, or welfare of students, or if they reasonably suspect that drugs, weapons, illegal or prohibited matter, or stolen goods are in a vehicle, the vehicle may be searched.

Safe School Policy The Murray School District Board of Education has approved a Safe School Policy which specifies action to be taken when students violate the law in the area of weapons, drugs and alcohol, assault and jeopardizing the safety and welfare of others within the school setting. This policy is included in the student handbook.
