Murrumburrah Public School Term 2 Week 6 25 May 2015 It’s Crunch Time A frequent topic for discussion during our P&C meetings is how to continue supporting good nutrition at school. Our canteen strives to have healthy options, fruit break is well supported by families, and teachers ensure good food choices are embedded in learning activities. The recent changes to the Food Pyramid http:// www.abc.net.au/health/features/ stories/2015/05/19/4238562.htm encourage us to eat more vegetables. In response to these changes, we have decided to run, as a trial, having a plate of fresh vegetables made available for each class on a Monday. The school will purchase the vegetables and the volunteers in the canteen will plate the vegies up. We are going to rename Fruit Break, Crunch Time. It is hoped that this will encourage students to bring fresh vegetables for Crunch Time. It’s Crunch Time

A frequent topic for discussion during our P&C meetings is how to continue supporting good nutrition at school. Our canteen strives to have healthy options, fruit break is well supported by families, and teachers ensure good food choices are embedded in learning activities. The recent changes to the Food Pyramid http://www.abc.net.au/health/features/stories/2015/05/19/4238562.htm encourage us to eat more vegetables.

Congratulations Rebecca Askell It is with great pleasure that we announce Rebecca Askell has been successful in gaining a permanent teaching position at Cootamundra Public School. Rebecca will commence work at her new school on 5 June 2015.

I am sure you will join me in congratulating Bec and we wish her every success with her career in education.

Genius Hour concludes Last Monday we had our last genius hour session for the year. Young geniuses used scalpels, twisters and probes to mine chocolate chips from cookies, remove the spine from a sardine and dissect a lamb’s kidney. All students showed expertise with this task and had a ball. Thank you parents for supporting this program and a huge thanks to Mrs Jan Young, from Murrumburrah High School, for volunteering her time and expertise.

REMINDER: NO CHEWING GUM AT SCHOOL PLEASE

Healthy Lunch Boxes For a balanced, healthy lunch box be sure to include a main meal (sandwich, wrap, salad) containing veggies and a protein food (meat, fish, chicken, egg, cheese), a piece of fruit, a healthy snack (eg veggie sticks), a drink (water is best). These healthy foods are low in fat, added sugar and salt plus they are rich in nutrients such as fibre and vitamins to keep your children learning throughout the day.

Picton Strings Performance at Wallendbeen Last Friday Year 3 were lucky enough to be invited to Wallendbeen to watch a 27 piece string orchestra performance. The students enjoyed a picnic in the park to farewell Mrs Saunders who completed her 4 week practicum. We then headed to the Wallendbeen Hall along with students from Stockinbingal and Wallendbeen Public School to watch the Picton Strings performance which was very entertaining. The orchestra was made up of 27 musicians who played a variety of stringed instruments including the violin, viola, cello and the crowd favourite was the double bass. The orchestra was introduced and the different instruments were demonstrated before playing a range of songs. Bonnie showed her musical talent when she was chosen to conduct the orchestra for a short piece. Students thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon in Wallendbeen. We would like to thank Mr Robert Lemon for donating his time to drive the bus, we greatly appreciate it.

Thank you The P&C would like to thank Tom O’Brien from Young Taxation who has very generously completed the audit of our P&C books. We thank him for his generous support of our school and P&C. Young Taxation also support us by donating $5 to the school for each Harden/Murrumburrah resident who has their tax return completed by them. So if you have your tax completed by Young Taxation please mention our school.
