School Development Day

The School Excellence Framework was the focus for

our half day School Development Day on Tuesday

afternoon & evening when we examined this

document in depth in preparation for developing

our 2018-2020 school plan.

The Framework supports all NSW public schools in

their pursuit of excellence by providing a clear

description of the key elements of high quality

practice across the three domains of learning,

teaching and leading.

The description of excellence in the Framework

supports schools as they engage their communities

in the development of a shared vision, the

identification of strategic priorities and the ongoing

tracking of progress towards them.

Later in the year, we will invite interested parents

and caregivers to participate in focus groups to

collaborate with us in developing our next 3 year

plan. If you are interested in being involved please

contact me. The more parents are involved the

greater the outcomes we can achieve together for

our students and our school.

What a Great Education Week!

Last week was certainly action-packed with a

Rugby League Skills Clinic, an excursion to the Byron

Writers Festival, our annual open day and a District

Athletics carnival, all in the one week!

Last Wednesday was our traditional Education

Week Open Day/Grandparents Day/Book Fair. It

was a great day for our students to showcase to

grandparents and family members the high quality

learning they are doing in their classrooms every

day.

We think this was the highest participation rate we

have ever had for students dressing up in the Book

Week theme “Escape to Anywhere”. As you can

see from our photos we had children escaping to

all corners of the globe and into books

themselves. An awesome effort from everyone

involved (thanks mums and dads)!

Our Book Fair was once again superbly organised

by Mrs Evans and our school will greatly benefit

purchased items.

Cross University will provide all services under the

supervision of Leonie Hamilton, Speech Pathologist

from Murwillumbah Community Health. Parents

are very welcome to attend sessions and can

Fundraiser - Kindy Cookbook

Our kindergarten children have finished compiling

their fundraising cookbook and it’s terrific! Copies

are now available for order and purchase from

the office. 30 pages of kids favourite savoury and

sweet recipes illustrated for just $5. Money raised

will go towards our much needed flood relief fund.

Don’t miss out!

“Happy Birthday” to these students

Tayla, Pharidah, Kayla, Tyson, and Trinity.

This Week’s Bee Rule

Attend school regularly.

Byron Writers Festival

On Tuesday 1st August over 100 of our students

were fortunate enough to attend two author

presentations at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre.

The tickets were given to us as a generous

donation from the Byron Writers group in the wake

of the damage to our community from ex-tropical

cyclone Debbie. The authors were Hilary Badger

and the award winning Tristan Banks.

Tristan entertained us with the hilarious stories from

his ‘My Life’ series of books. One in particular -

involving his dog and a mess left on his bedroom

rug, a French cooking dessert assignment and his

sister wanting to eat the dessert!!!! There were also

the, what would you rather do scenarios, such as –

Have your whole body covered in bees or eat a

bee sandwich? Be a werewolf or a vampire?

Hilary Badger is one of the writers of the Zac Power

series of books. Zac Power is a child secret agent.

Hilary managed to engage our students with her

stories and include the audience in ideas for

crafting a great story. Some of the ideas children

presented were bizarre – one included a giant

zombie!

The children are still talking about the visit and

how fantastic it was. We are incredibly grateful to

Byron Writers for this generous donation and

opportunity for positive life long memories. The

children who attended were very inspired to write

stories – who knows maybe we have a few future

budding authors in the mix.

Thank you

Carmel Evans

Library News

Last term we received a very generous box of

quality new books with popular titles, donated by

BOOKTOPIA. They support various programs such

as literacy for kids, Indigenous communities and

local schools. We are very fortunate to have

received these books.

Thank you to Mrs D Robinson for writing to the

organisation on our behalf.

our school assembly starting at 12noon in our

school hall. Everyone is welcome to come along.

Spelling Bee Procedures

1. The Bee Master will pronounce the word.

2. The participant will then pronounce the word,

spell the word, and pronounce the word again.

3. The Head Judge will have the responsibility for

stopping the student if he/she fails to pronounce

the word or if the student pronounces the word

incorrectly.

4. If the student still begins to spell without

pronouncing the word, he/she will be disqualified

from the contest.

5. The participant must:

Pronounce the word before spelling. This is to

ensure that the student has heard the correct

word.

Look at the Bee Master when spelling the word.

Spell the word orally. Participants will not be

allowed to write the word before spelling it.

Pronounce the word again after the word is

spelled.

Speak clearly and loudly. The officials' decision

is final in determining the correctness of the

spelling, which may be misunderstood if not

spoken clearly.

The participant may ask for any pronunciation,

meaning, or sentence to be repeated for

clarification before spelling. If a participant

takes undue advantage of this rule, he/she will

be advised by the Bee Master.

Timing

The participant shall have 45 seconds from the

time he/she pronounces the word until he/she

must begin spelling the word. If the participant

does not begin spelling at the end of the 45-

second period, he/she will be disqualified. At 30

second mark a bell will ring. At 45 second mark a

bell will ring twice. And he/she will be disqualified.

District Athletics Carnival

Last Friday 60 students from our school attended

the District Athletics Carnival at Murwillumbah

High School. This was the biggest and strongest

team that we have sent in a long time. There were

some fantastic personal achievements and all

students need to be commended on their

sportsmanship. Results for our students are on

page 4 of our newsletter. These students will now

be making their way to the Far North Coast

carnival to be held on Friday 18th August at Byron

Bay.

Congratulations everyone and good luck at the

next level.

Book Fair & Book Character Parade

A very big heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who

organised the costumes for your children. It was a

mighty effort this year! I had a fabulous time

looking at all of the children dressed up and I

believe the children also had a fabulous time

being dressed in costume!

We have sold $4,545.00 worth of books so far!!!

That is an amazing contribution from our

community for which I sincerely thank you! This

enables our school to take $1,690.00 worth of

books from the Scholastic Book Fair. We are

incredibly grateful for your support and generosity.

The words are few but the thanks are many.

Thank you

Public Speaking at MEPS

My favourite time of the year has arrived; it is when we say to the children of MEPS it is time to TALK!!! It is

wonderful strolling on our playground discussing topics, listening to speeches and sharing what children

what they love, hate, are thoroughly annoyed by or new knowledge they have learnt. Congratulations

Murwillumbah East, Public Speaking is here.

Some Housekeeping

Public Speaking is about 2 main areas:

Matter = what you say

Manner = how you say it

MATTER

Choose a topic you absolutely love or hate

Decide if your purpose to entertain, inform or persuade

WARNING! Do not confuse Public Speaking with acting. NO PROPS.

The audience will remember how you made them FEEL. So start with a stunning opening (question,

joke, statement or quote) and memorable conclusion.

Facts from a book or the internet are great to include in your speech but the audience wants to learn

about YOU! Remember to include your connection to the topic. What are your opinions and values?

Try to be original

Try not to give over-technical data

Always start with Chairperson, members of the audience

NEVER begin with Today I am going to talk about…

Always finish with Chairperson

MANNER

Make eye contact

DO NOT

Lose eye contact with your audience

Use gesture, voice to keep up the interest of the audience

DO NOT

Mumble

Use palm cards BUT

DO NOT

Read too much

Good luck to everyone and I look forward to listening to many, many captivating speeches.
