Murwillumbah East Primary School Newsletter Term 4, Week 4 1st November, 2016 Stage 2 Camp Stage 2 had a great time at Lake Ainsworth last week as the photos in this newsletter show. I was fortunate enough to visit them on the Wednesday and Friday and see them enjoy snorkelling, raft building, kayaking and rock climbing. The food was really delicious too. All these activities while lots of fun also teach our students real skills for life as well. The instructors were keen to point out skills in problem solving, cooperation, communication and creativity. All future-focused skills our students will need in their lives. Thank you to Mrs Robinson, Ms O’Loughlin, Mr Wills, Mrs Woods and Karen Walker who supervised our students. We appreciate you giving up your night times so that our students have this excellent opportunity. Finally, thank you to our students who upheld our values and expected behaviour whilst away representing our school, great job! Rotary Donation Robyn Dowling, representing Murwillumbah Rotary, last week presented our school with a $50 donation to go towards our book prizes on Presentation Day. We greatly appreciate the support we receive from Rotary and look forward to seeing their representative on Presentation Day in a few weeks time. World Teachers’ Day Last Friday was World Teachers’ Day. A day when we celebrate teachers around the world. As we had so many away at camp on that day we decided to acknowledge all our teachers at our Monday morning assembly instead. Thank you to all our Murwillumbah East teachers, we all know what a fabulous job you all do each and every day! Murwillumbah East PS Principal Position As you would now be aware, Mr Downward is the new principal of Pottsville Beach PS. As such, the principal’s job at Murwillumbah East PS will now be advertised and a merit selection process has begun. The position is expected to be finalised before the end of term. Gifted and Talented Engineering Day

On Tuesday Yazmyne and I travelled to Kingscliff

High School to participate in an Engineering Day

which is part of the Great 5 Gifted and Talented

Program. At the start of the day we learnt about

hydraulics and anyone who answered questions

and made examples received a Great 5 Card. The

person with the most cards won a book on

hydraulics or a Lego construction.

During the day we had to work in teams and go

into separate class rooms to create something

useful in the community. One team made a

hydraulic machine that lifted the arm up and down

keeping the plank of wood that was connected to

the end level and straight.

The second team, we were involved in creating a

scissor lift that would help someone painting a two

storey house. To make this we used some syringes

to move the water from one side to the other. The

principle involved is the same as a hydraulic

cylinder which is used in many types of heavy

machinery.

The day was fascinating and a great introduction

to what a great career engineering would be.
