COLOGNE - The RTL Group is nowdefinitively Germany's biggest radiocompany following its purchase ofthe radio portfolio of AVE, part ofthe Holtzbrinck media group.

What if the future of the music industry was notonline or mobile, but built around a good, old-fash-ioned solid soundcarrier?
Despite newspaper articles on the return of vinyl,it's hard to believe that this is the future of music-but what about the DVD?
This exciting digital carrier has gone fromstrength to strength over the past two to three years, and is now the dominant platform for movies in theUS, outselling video cassettes. In terms of penetra-tion, it took CDs 10 years to be where the DVD isnow-and a lot of DVD players now also accept CDsand even SACDs.
DVDs are already encrypted, and can carry all thedata you need for identification. Even if cracking thecodes is apparently an easy game for hackers, it isstill better than the open house that CDs are.
As the manufacturing prices of DVDs come down, itwon't be long before they become as competitive as CDs.At Popkomm in Cologne this week, Sonopress waslaunching a "DVD Lite", described as "a quick, inex-pensive way of integrating images and video materi-al onto a music DVD". This is a welcome develop-ment, which will make labels more inclined to con-sider DVD as a relevant format.
Because MP3 is at the low -end of the sound expe-rience, labels could combat the file -sharing trend byoffering the best of what technology can deliver-onDVDs you can bundle sound and image at the bestdigital quality, with text, lyricsand pictures. That makes the con-sumer's experience more reward-ing than with traditional CDs andmore cost effective (you get morefor about the same price as a CD).
Consumers could be ready topay for such an enhanced product,if they believe it's worth the priceand they can't get it elsewhere forfree.

UK sales see second quarter dropby Hamish Champ
LONDON - The World Cup and theQueen's Golden Jubilee played amajor part in the slump in secondquarter UK music sales as con-sumers stayed away from retailoutlets, according to local labels'body the BPI.
Observers suggest the secondhalf of the year will see an improve-ment in the industry's fortunes, with a number of key new releasesby the likes of U2, Coldplay hittingthe shelves on top of albums byOasis, Red Hot Chilli Peppers andothers.
The value of the overall marketfrom April to June was £215.3 mil-lion (euros 336.94), down 15.4% onthe same period last year. Total UKalbum sales fell 15.6% in value to£192.3 million, with volumes down
10.9% to 41.1 million units. Singlessales fell nearly 14% in value to£23.05 million, while volumes were11.9% down at 13 million units.
"A quarterly downturn in totalsales of 15.4% is clearly unwelcomenews for the UK industry, whichhas recently outperformed mostother international territories,"says the BPI in a statement.
"With stronger releases in thesecond half of the year and the con-tinuing successes of titles such asthe quarterly bestseller TheEminem Show, sales increases maystill be recorded in 2002 as awhole," it adds.
According to data from MediaMonitoring Services, record compa-nies' TV advertising spend fell by28% to £12.3 million in the secondquarter.
Managing director of retailer
HMV, David Pryde, says: "Manyrecord companies chose to holdback a number of releases duringthis period with the result that thelevel of TV advertising spend formusic-a key factor in driving peo-ple into stores-was down by near-ly a third."
Pryde says he is optimistic aboutthe second half, however. "Saleshave picked up since then and we'relooking forward to some fantasticautumn releases as we begin ourapproach to the Christmas tradingperiod," he says.
The market needs to find anincrease of 4% on current numbersjust to remain level in 2002, withsome analysts fearing that the pre-viously strong UK market mayhave finally succumbed to the weaktrends currently affecting otherEuropean music markets.
Pressplay to offer portable download optionsby Juliana Koranteng
LONDON - Pressplay, the subscrip-tion -based, digitally -deliveredonline music service jointly ownedby Sony Music and Universal MusicGroup, has become the first legiti-mate online service to allow usersto download tracks onto digitalportable devices. It is also signifi-cantly increasing the number oflicensed tracks consumers can burnonto blank CDs.
As from August 1, Pressplay inthe US is posing a challenge to thefree file -sharing operators with thelatest version of the system-Press-play 2.0-which can be used todownload and stream on PCs asmany tracks as are available.
"Beyond our ability to burn CDs,which we offered from the start, oursubscribers told us they wantedmore flexibility, permanence andportability options," says newly -promoted CEO Michael Bebel, for-merly Pre s splay's COO. He
replaced founding CEO AndySchuon in July.
The service costs anupfront fee of $17.95 (euros18.19) a month-or$179.40 a year-and,although the basic fee lim-its the number of "portabledownloads" to 10 tracks amonth, customers can payfor extra tracks (rangingfrom $5.95 per five extratracks to $18.95 for 20 extra).
Also on offer is Radio Pressplay,a package of pre-programmed,streamed and genre -based onlineradio stations.
Analysts have criticised Press -play and the other legitimate onlinemusic services, including the rivalmajor -label funded MusicNet andRhapsody from Listen.com, foroffering customers only a limitedamount of licensed music.
This has made it difficult for themto compete against KaZaA, Groksterand the growing number of other ille-
gal file -sharing services that giveusers access to a far greater range of
music for free.As a result, the online
music sector is alreadybecoming fragmented evenbefore the concept hasbecome established as analternative to traditionalCD sales.
"In the last six months, particularly in Europe and
the US, people are realising thereisn't the same sense of opportunityfor music services in the onlinespace, particularly f -or paid -formusic," says Mark Mulligan (pic-tured), senior analyst at London -based Jupiter Research. "Butthere's a huge enthusiasm for musiconline as a marketing tool to pushsales off and online."
Pressplay 2.0 is still a US -orient-ed service, but Los Angeles -basedspokesman Seth Oster tells M&Mthat the company plans to developEuropean editions in the long-term.

Dutch Internet stations fight feesby Menno Visser
HILVERSUM - Dutch Inter-net radio stations are notsatified at the amount ofmoney they are being askedto pay in music licensingfees.
Dutch neighbouringrights organisation SENAis planning to bill onlinestations accordingto the number ofaudio streams theyuse to transmittheir stations viathe 'net, whichcould be as much aseuros 56,000 for 750streams.
"Relating [the fees] to thenumber of potential [ratherthan actual] listeners is avery strange accountingmethod," says Erwin Blom(pictured), head of digital atpublic broadcaster VPRO-
the most advanced Dutchproducer of Internet radio."It could be so simple: Takethe amount a normal radiostation has to pay SENA andthen relate it the actualnumber of internet listeners. For the listener, it makes nodifference whether they arelistening to a station terres-trially or via the web."
The commentsare the response toa letter sent out bySENA to online sta-tions outlining theamounts they mustpay for a licence toair music on the'net.
Berry Matser, owner ofpioneering Dutch Internetradio station Frequent FM,has set up a lobbying groupwith other online stationsto campaign against thecharges.
"We are willing to pay acertain amount-but itshould be in relation towhat we are paying [Dutchcopyright body] BUMA,"says Matser. "SENA is ask-ing almost a hundred timesas much. If we can't come toa solution, we might consid-er creating a peer -to -peersystem, so we only have topay for one stream whichcould be shared by millions.Or we might relocate ourservers to Russia."
SENA stresses that itdoes not want to create aconflict with the online sta-tions, and that it is still atthe negotiating stage.
SENA managing direc-tor Hans van Berkel says;"What Internet radio sta-tions probably don't realiseis that webcasting meansworldwide usage, andshould be paid for as such."

COPENHAGEN - Commercialradio has increased its shareof radio listening in Den-mark at the expense of pub-lic broadcaster DanmarksRadio (DR), according to sec-ond-quarter audience figuresfrom Gallup.
While DR still enjoys thelargest slice of the radiopie, commercial radio nowaccounts for 30% of theaudience, up from 28.9% inthe first quarter of 2002.
DR, meanwhile, droppedmore than a point to 66.5%.Its CHR station P3 inchedup slightly to 22%, whilethe regional, full -service P4fell from 38.9% to 36.2%.However, these figures
were probably influencedby the transfer of DR'ssports programming fromP4 to P3, particularly asthe survey covered theWorld Cup period.
Otherwise the picture isrelatively stable, ahead ofthe arrival of a new nation-al commercial frequency inDenmark. The applicationprocess for the fifth FM fre-quency, which would covermost of the country, willbegin in November.
"We won't be seeing anydrastic changes before thefifth frequency is up and run-ning-and that will most like-ly be a year from now," saysThomas Gronbech, sales andanalysis manager at commer-cial AC station Radio 2.
"DR will really feel theentrance of a nationwidecommercial player," Gron-bech predicts.
A new feature on the rat-ings chart is the inclusionof a figure for all of ClearChannel's radio interests inDenmark, which includeRadio 2 and Uptown(CHR). As a whole, ClearChannel took a 4.7% sharethis quarter.

Today all set for tommorrowWith a string of presti-gious awards, increas-ingly favourable ratingsand now the backing ofa major UK radio group, national Hot AC/talk sta-tion Today FM appears tohold all the aces in IrishRadio, as Ann Scottreports.
STATIONIN FOCUS
The Republic of Ireland's onlynational commercial broad-caster, Today FM, began liferather conservatively onMarch 17, 1997 as Radio
Ireland, a middle-of-the-road sta-tion with a heavy emphasis onnews, talk and domestic Irishmusic that was designed to take onthe might of the country's mostpopular station, public broadcasterRTE's full -service Radio 1.
But after Radio Ireland regis-tered a reach of just 1% in its firstofficial JNLR ratings book-a fig-ure that must have delighted bothRTE and the country's establishedlocal commercial stations such asFM104 and 98FM in Dublin- achange of direction was clearlyneeded.
To get those fresh ideas, RadioIreland-then an independentcompany-called upon the servicesof Ginger Media, the UK radio andTV production company createdand owned by media personalityChris Evans. Following a period ofconsultancy work undertaken atthe station by Ginger Media's GeoffHolland-one of the many pro-grammers who can claim to be anex -programme director of UK rockstation Virgin Radio-RadioIreland was re -born' on January 5,1998 as Today FM, a younger, hip-per station with a Hot AC musicpolicy and a more irreverent atti-tude, aimed at up-market 20 -44 -year -olds.
Since its relaunch, the stationhas enjoyed steady growth, withJNLR figures published in
February this year showing aweekly reach of 31%, amounting tojust under a million weekly listen-ers.
Measured balanceOffering a mix of provocative newsand comedy, and a sometimeseclectic mix of musical styles,Today FM nevertheless owes muchof its success to consistency in pro-gramming, with a measured bal-ance between daytime and night-time. output.
"I suppose we're divided into twostations really," says head of musicBrian Adams. "It's adult contempo-rary or adult pop during the dayand alternative music-or pop withattitude-from 7pm until lam."
Today FM's daytime music out-put comprises two-thirds currentsand recurrents, and a third oldies.Under its original licence agree-ment with the Irish governmentdating back to the Radio Irelanddays, Today FM is obliged to play asignificant amount of domesticmusic. "We aim to play between25% and 30% Irish music-morethan any other Irish radio station,"says Adams.
The station's more cutting -edgeevening output includes the award -winning Pet Sounds presented byTom Dunne, best known for beingthe lead singer and main song-writer in Something Happens.Airing Monday to Thursday
23.00, while the Headphones Hourafter midnight has a reputation forpushing out musical boundaries. Here Comes The Night is resentedand produced by Donal Dineen, aformer editor and presenter of cut-ting -edge music TV programme NoDisco.
Personality pullPersonalities play an importantrole at Today FM, whose licencerequires it to devote at least 20% of
its output to news and cu.rrentaffairs. Much of that is fulfilled byEamon Dunphy's provocative andcontroversial Last Word news andtalk show, which occupies the17.00-19.00 afternoon drive slotand enjoys an ever-increasing loy-alty from the station's target demo-graphic in a country which tradi-

- Brian Adams, head of music, Today FMtionally has big appetite for poli-tics.
And an important milestoneachieved by Today FM recently hasbeen its breakfast show, hosted byex -RTE man Ian Dempsey, over-taking public CHR station RTE2FM's breakfast show.
But despite its excellent ratingsperformance lately and the finan-cial security which its take-over byUK media group Scottish RadioHoldings last year has brought, theToday FM management knows itcannot afford to be complacent.
"The market becomes more com-petitive every year," notes Adams."There are three new stationswhich have launched [in Ireland]so far this year alone. Some sta-tions are going for very young audi-ences, playing top 40 chart hits.Others are taking the trendiermusic on board which we playmostly in the evenings. There is aconstant threat from these andexisting stations, but I say themore the merrier."
Today FM's only nationwide
rival, however, remains RTE's2FM, which has to perform thetricky balancing act of having tosell airtime while also fluffing itspublic service responsibilities.
Awards haulToday FM's success has been recog-nised at several prestigious awardceremonies in the past 12 months. In November 2001, the station wonfive categories in' the inauguralPPI (Phonographic PerformanceIreland) Radio Awards. The IanDempsey Breakfast Show took two;Music Programming/DailySequences and EntertainmentLink. Tom Dunne's Witness Specialon his Pet Sounds show won theMusic Special category,Premiership Live was voted bestSports Programme, and the newsteam won the Event Coverage cat-egory for its coverage of theSeptember 11 terrorist attacks inthe US.
Tom Dunne also won the presti-gious Best Radio DJ Award at theMeteor Music Awards in February. He had been awarded the sametitle only a week previously by HotPress Magazine's Readers' Poll forhis Pet Sounds programme, beat-ing 2FM's legendary Dave Fanningfor the first time. Support fordomestic music also led to aFairplay for Airplay award forDunne earlier in the year.
Today FM's distinctive market-ing executions have also receivedindustry acclaim. The station wonthe Outdoor Effectiveness award atthe Outdoor Media Awards lastyear, while a campaign forDunphy's Last Word received theThe Sunday Tribune newpaper Adof The Year 2000 accolade.

MBA REPORTS
Clary is finding the right balanceSpending a couple of hours in
the company of EMI Italy pres-ident and CEO Riccardo Claryis entertaining. Sure, waitingto be ushered into his Milan
office has all the solemnity of any otherencounter with a high-ranking indus-try executive, but the regalia thatadorns his walls-such as the garishred and yellow jersey of his much lovedRoma football team, a plastic centuri-on's helmet and other toys-tell youthat you don't need to be too formal.
Sense of funClary himself is hilariously funnyeven though he speaks about therecord industry with the utmost seri-ousness. Yet somehow it's the anarchicone-liners that stand out, such as, inthe section on the future of technology,he claims that he is "working with agroup of chemists to develop a musicalsuppository".
Under his auspices, EMI RecordedMusic Italy is an undoubted successstory. Although figures in Italy tend tobe vague, the company is believed to besecond to Universal in market share, with an estimated 19%, of whichCapitol has between 12-13% and Virginbetween 6-7%. And, with a roster thatincludes Vasco Rossi-who averages700,000 units per album-and TizianoFerro, whose first single, Perdono solda million copies in Europe, it has thedemographic range pretty well covered.
Elsewhere in the industry, Clary isregarded with a rare mixture of affec-tion and respect. Zomba Italy MDRoberto Biglia comments: 'The guy's agenius and, by Italian standards atleast, very young [Clary is 42]. I also

Tax cutsThe episode Biglia refers to was theopen letter that Clary wrote to Italy'sprime minister during the SanremoFestival in March calling on his gov-ernment to lower the 20% sales tax onItalian CDs, which-along with ram-pant piracy-help explain the coun-try's poor sales. Berlusconi repliedimmediately, promising to lower thetax in this year's budget, even if, at thetime of writing, this has yet to happen.

At Sanremo and elsewhere, Clarysays people "take the music industryfor granted. The real power in thiscountry is in the automobile industry,
"In the last six months or so, we havebecome far better at fighting for our rights."
- Ricardo Clary,CEO, EMI Italy
It wasn't Clary's first public gestureon behalf of the industry: last Octoberhe and Universal Music's chief execu-tive Piero La Falce announced theywould not be sending artists to theSanremo Youngsters Section, and theiraction has subsequently produced amore accommodating attitude on thepart of the festival organisers. Theirprotest was essentially about the factthat Sanremo had become a money -
From gopher to CEOAs a youngster, Riccardo Clary, who grew up in Rome, wasmore interested in basketball than music, but that allchanged when he went to university in the late 1970s. "Ineeded to pay my way and, seeing as my mother worked intelevision, I was able to get a job as a gopher for a promo-tion agency, delivering records to radio stations," he said.Soon after he dropped out of college and got a job with
Warner. Things changed again with the arrival of new MD, Luigi Calabrese, who "told me to move to Milan, where he would teach me the business." Clarytook up the offer and became a label manager for international repertoire but, when Clary's mentor Calabrese left in 1985, "I decided to do so, too".
He returned to Rome to set up a small promotion and publishing company, but joined BMG in 1988, where he become a marketing manager and laterdirector. "Our market share for international repertoire share really explodedthanks to licensing deals with MCA Geffen, Jive and Mute," he says.
"[Then] one day in 1994, the phone rang and I knew it was a job offer. Itwas an old colleague I hadn't spoken to in ages, Lidia Fernandez in Spain, who said Virgin Italy were looking for someone to run the show in Italy." Clarywas appointed by Ken Berry and moved back to Milan in 1994. "Staff atVirgin Italy were demoralised, wewere losing money and the marketshare was 1%, but we [Clary andScottish CFO Roger Mitchell] wereyoung and felt we could do any-thing. We broke a lot of Virgin'sEuropean acts in Italy, such asLene Marlin and Jarabe de Palo, and, in terms of local repertoire, signed Max Gazze and Marina Rei.We soon broke even and [took]Virgin's market share to a peak of11%." In 1998 Clary was promotedto CEO of EMI Italy.
Ricardo Clary1960: Born in Rome1981: Joins Warner1985: Leaves Warner, returns toRome and sets up his own promotionagency.1988: Joins BMG in Rome, beingpromoted to marketing director.1994: Moves back to Milan, tobecome GM at Virgin Italy.1998: Promoted to CEO of EMI Italy.
television and publishing. If any ofthese groups want something, the gov-ernment sits up and takes notice." Themusic industry, on the other hand, hasto lobby for years, even if Clary recog-nises that "in the last six months or so,we have become far better at fightingfor our rights."
Clary's sense of loyalty is clearwhen asked whether complaints aboutpiracy and sales tax might be a way ofcovering up for the industry's own mis-takes. "Look," he says, "I'm sure that ifsomebody came along with an illegalalternative to the automobile that costless than a fifth of the price, then we'dall be talking about the mistakes madeby the car industry."
He's also. good at explaining thedynamics of Italian business. Not onlyhas piracy in Italy been fuelled by indif-ference on the part of the authorities, ithas also been helped by newspapercampaigns claiming CDs are too expen-sive.
Exciting timesIn spite of his sense of frustration overthe institutions' failure to support themusic industry, Clary isn't a doom mer-chant: "In many respects, these areexciting times as music is every-where-research has even shown thatin supermarkets the products that peo-ple buy are influenced by the type ofmusic being played over the PA."
The challenge is finding a way ofmaking new forms of music remuner-ative. Another Clary crusade is theimprovement of rights collection inItaly, which, he says, is a long waybehind other countries. A couple ofyears ago the Societa ConsortileFonografici was founded in order toaddress radio and other connectedrights, and its president, GianluigiChiodaroli, is EMI Recorded Music's
vice-president of strategic businessdevelopment and human resources,as well as director of legal affairs.
Nor does Clary think the industryis on the verge of meltdown. "Recordlabels aren't going to disappear, butthere is a serious risk that they willbecome increasingly dependent oncatalogue for revenue, and that ispotentially disastrous for the develop-ment of new talent," he says. Not sur-prisingly, he is big on A&R and lastyear recruited Fabrizio Giannini, for-mer general manager of Warner label,CGD East West, to become EMI'ssenior director, new local artists &new local talents (he has since beenpromoted to vice-president of A&R).
New talentAt Warner Giannini had signed LauraPausini, Ligabue and Irene Grandiand, Clary recalls, "When Fabriziointerviewed for the job, he said There'ssomething I really want to play you.'Naturally, I panicked. We'd been get-ting on really well until then, but Ithought, 'Oh, no, what if I hate it?' "Fortunately, the artist in question wasTiziano Ferro, one of the most excitingItalian discoveries of recent years.
Virgin Italy continues to have aninteresting roster, even if Clarybrought about a dramatic changeearlier this year by replacing jointgeneral managers Marco Alboni inMilan and Marco Cestoni in Rome, with Giampietro Paravella. It was,Clary says, "Purely a question ofphilosophical approach-I wantedsomeone who was more in line withour re -structuring policy."
Meanwhile, Clary himself willalmost certainly continue to be thesubject of speculation. Such was hissuccess at EMI that last summerrumours suggested he would bepromoted to a pan-European post.Later in the year, however, whenAlain Levy and David Munns tookover and heads rolled throughoutEurope, many thought Clary him-self would be replaced. He wasn't,and in retrospect, it isn't hard tosee why.
Paolo Franchini, president ofEdel Italy, argues that Clary is"without doubt one of the Italianrecord industry's most creative fig-ures. He loves his job, but he alsoknows how to enjoy it and he's gen-uinely passionate about music."

ARTISTS & MUSIC
McAlmont & Butler Bring It Backby Adam Howorth
They're two of the most mercurial talents theBritish music industry has produced in the last 10years. They've also spectacularly failed to live up tothe promise of their early careers. Now with thehelp of the creative marketing types behind thelikes of Beth Orton and Starsailor atEMI:Chrysalis, David McAlmont and BernardButler have resumed their collaborative careerafter a lapse of seven years.
Their first album together, The Sound OfMcAlmont & Butler, came out in November 1995 onVirgin following Butler's split from Suede at theheight of their popularity, the year before. McAlmont, who had been the frontman in Thieves, then releasedhis debut solo record, A Little Communication (Hut),in 1998, while Butler signed with Creation Recordsand put out two modest selling solo albums (PeopleMove On and Friends & Lovers). But, despite a fairlypublic falling out, the two artists decided to burytheir differences and signed with Capitol for a secondcollaborative instalment.
"The concept of McAlmont & Butler alwaysappealed to me as a pair of characters outside thetwo of us, and having a theme to start the albumkind of adds to that," concedes Butler, referring tothe opening track of the pair's latest opus, Bring ItBack, which came out in the UK on August 12. Thesong in question, Theme From...McAlmont &Butler, sets the tone for the rest of the record witha swirling, soaring rush of guitars, strings andvocals that would sit comfortably on the soundtrackto Tarantino's Jackie Brown.
r
One of the biggest radio stations in the UK toplaylist Falling, is national rock station Virgin Radio."On the first McAlmont & Butler record the mix ofgreat songwriter with great melodies and sublimevocals is very potent," says Paul Jackson, programmedirector at the London -based station. "Falling is astrong crossover song and if they stick together they'lldo fantastically well in the next few years."
So it's pop, but not as we know it in 2002.Rather, the return of McAlmont & Butler celebratesthe sound of the '60s, but with a modern sheen.Alan Pell, A&R director of EMI:Chrysalis, signedthe act after receiving a demo from their publisherWarner Chappell. "They were looking for the righthome," he says, "and I think they've made a classicsoul album, like the Isley Brothers-it's contempo-rary retro in the same way Macy Gray was."
Given the timing of the release, Capitol is not giv-ing it an international roll -out quite yet, says Pell."Europe closes down for the summer," he says. "Wewant to go in there with a story to tell-you can'tbeat France up [for example] for not breaking youracts when you're not breaking them yourselves.
Kevin Brown, international director for Capitol UK,acknowledges that the album's ambitious directionneeds to be embraced domestically before being export-ed internationally. "The strategy has been to developthe UK to the point of getting the rest of Europe to takenotice," he tells M&M. "The last time round they justdid a single that developed into an album, so this timewe want it to blow up here first and then roll it out tothe rdst of Europe around the autumn."
A second single, Bring It Back, is slated forrelease in the UK at the end of October.
Trucks hope for x -rated hit
With surely one of the best song titlesfor many a year, Anglo-Norwegianact Trucks are hoping for big thingswith their humerous punk rockanthem It's Just Porn Mum.
Following its May 27 release, thesingle has been embraced by radioand music television and ensured thedebut act a long stint in the localsales chart. But while the single, pro-duced in Oslo by WaterfallProductions, came out on UniversalMusic in Norway, the band are actu-ally signed directly to UK indie GutRecords.
"I heard their record back inJanuary and met with their man-agers," says Guy Holmes, chairmanand managing director of GutRecords. "We thought it was going tobe a hit [so] we met with WaterfallProductions in Oslo and talked abouthow we could put the record together."Homes adds, "Universal Norway werenot involved at the time-they camealong once the record was ready"
Gut Records has licensed the actto Polydor Germany and Universal
Music International outside the UKand Ireland, excluding Australiawhere it is licensed to FestivalMushroom. Through the major'sinvolvement, the single will bereleased on September 16 acrossEurope, while the debut album isscheduled for the end of November, according to Holmes. "We have a pol-icy of working with indies across theworld; it's good for all of us," he says."Europe's a small place now and welive in an international market. Goodmusic travels, it always has done."
The campaign started off in theUK, where the single is out onSeptember 2. "We've hijacked majoradvertising billboards across London, with speech bubbles featuring justthe title," continues Holmes. Thetopic of It's Just Porn Mum has natu-rally caused a stir in some quarters, but this doesn't seem to bother thelabel. "We're in rock'n'roll, you've gotto rock the boat," says Holmes. "Andit's worked-we've been picked up byMTV, Kerrang!, The Box. There's areal big buzz about it."
"We are playing it heavily onMTV2 and supporting it on MTV UK& Ireland and MTV Nordic," con-firms MTV Networks Europe' VPmusic programming, Hans Hagman."It's a funny, tongue-in-cheek songand video about late night TV. As wenow have a more daytime friendlyversion of the video, we can give itmore daytime plays on the channels,so it could become a surprise hit ofthe summer."
DANCE GROOVESby Gary Smith
SECOND BYTEAntwerp -based label BYTE Recordshas another potential crossover hiton its hands in the form of Shake Itby The Moon. The follow-up to debutsingle Blow The Speakers-whichwas released in Benelux, Germany,France, Canada and the US-isalready turning heads in the UK,where the vinyl version was releasedthis week on Amato. "Initial dance -floor and DJ reactions have been veryencouraging," says Nii van denEynde, head of marketing and inter-national exploitation at BYTE. "TheCJ Bolland remix that has been wide-ly praised [by DJ Tiesto amongst oth-ers] and, on the radio side, Shake Ithas already been getting plays fromStudio Brussels [alternative] andTOP Radio [CHR] in Belgium. We dobelieve that the track has consider-able crossover potential." Alongsidethe vinyl version currently circulat:ing in the UK, the track is beingactively promoted in Ibiza. "We areworking the track on the UK andIbiza club scenes in order to build aprofile for the late summer/earlyautumn," adds van den Eynde.
CHILL -OUT THERAPYThe album 'One Day Deep by Prafulhas quietly but forcefully establisheditself as something of a chill -out phe-nomenon. Initially released inHolland last summer on Therapy
Records, tracks from the album havesince been used as soundbeds on sev-eral TV shows. More significantly, 10out of the 11 tracks on the album havesince appeared on dozens of compila-tions throughout Europe, Brazil andin the US.
"We've been getting an impressiveamount of support from chill/loungejocks all over the world as well asfrom deep house DJs like Jon Cutler,"says Therapy Records managingdirector Bart Vingerhutz. "And wereceive e -mails from all over theworld enquiring about the band andthe album on a daily basis."
The single Inspiracao, which wasshipped last week to Dutch stores, iscurrently on medium rotation at 3FM(CHR). Therapy has also just licensedthe album in the US to new LA -basedlabel Rendezvous. "They are con-vinced that Praful is going to be thenew star of the chill/lounge scenewhich in the US is allied to thesmooth jazz scene," says Vingerhutz.
Rendezvous was formed byGrammy award -winning saxophoneplayer Dave Koz, Hyman Katz of jazzlabel Unity Entertainment Recordsand Frank Cody. Cody is, according toThe New York Times, the father ofsmooth jazz. He is also the founder ofBroadcast Architecture. "Praful is thelabel's second signing," addsVingerhutz. "They are currentlyweighing up whether the album willbe distributed by Warner Music orRED."

KELLY OSBOURNEPAPA DON'T PREACH(Epic)Release date: September9 (UK), August 4 (France,Spain, Italy), July 22 (Ger-many, Sweden, Holland)The Obournes cash cowgets fatter still. With the
news that MTV has picked up the multi -milliondollar option for a further series of the hit real -life sitcom, 17 -year -old daughter Kelly nowfollows in her father Ozzy's footsteps as a singerwith a lighthearted take on the Madonna songfrom 1986 about refusing to listen to what papahas to say. "This is a spunky, rockin' cover of theMadge track about father/daughter relationshipproblems - all very tongue in cheek of course,"says James Curran, head of music at VirginRadio (rock) in the UK who has added the trackto the playlist. "It is bound to do well given theomnipresence of the Osbournes at the moment. It will be interesting to see if Papa does betterthan dad's last single Dreamer which made thetop 10." The track features on a soundtrackalbum to the Osbournes TV show along with thetheme tune, Crazy Train - written by Ozzy andperformed by US crooner Pat Boon.
Currently playing at: Orb Fritz/Germany, Delta Radio/Germany, EinsLive/Germany, Radio Uptown/Denmark, Radio Sky+/Estonia,

FLAMING LIPSDo You REALISE??(Warner Bros)Release date: August 19The Flaming Lips achievethe unusual distinction ofmanaging to sound bothutterly original and yetcompellingly listenable.
Taken from their latest album, Yoshimi BattlesThe Pink Robots, first single Do You Realise??is a luscious mix of strummed guitars, "oohs"and "aahs", tacky drum machine beats andecho -rich vocals. Opening with the line, "Doyou realise that you have the most beautifulface?", the single is the closest the band fromOklahoma City come to penning a traditionallove song. Attempting to sum up the myriad ofinstruments and effects on the record, ColinMartin, executive producer (music) at UK ACstation BBC Radio 2, says: "This is a real`kitchen sink' of a record with a comic, sombre, cheerful pub philosopher's lyric and a soundwhich - although heavy with production - it islike something the old kitchen sink masterhimself, Phil Spector, would have produced."The reference to "kitchen sink" means thateverything has been thrown into the mix, eventhe kitchen sink. Martin adds, "It's all there atthe top level but you can actually hear theindividual elements [as well]. It's a lovelysummer track worthy of a soft -top car and anopen road."

DANCE
DANCE BEATThe weekly dance chart comment by Harald Roth
With a 14.7% increase in clubplay and a 3.3%increase in sales at specialist dance retail, there was never any question of Tim Deluxe's ItJust Won't Do (Underwater) not staying atnumber one for a third week on the EuropeanDance Traxx chart.
Up to number two from last week's five isDutch act 4 Strings' Diving (Spinning). Currentlyon the charts in Germany, Benelux, the UK andHungary, it has yet to make an impact inScandinavia, France and southern Europe-sohas plenty of room for further growth. 4 Strings'previous highest -charting track to date was TakeMe Away (Into The Night) (Spinning), whichreached number three last February.
Only one new cut moves into the Dance Traxxtop 10 this week. Brooklyn Bounce's Loud &Proud (Dance Division -Sony) moves up a notchto number 10, and has just entered the officialFrench club chart. The track is also charting inthe Benelux, Austria, Poland, the CzechRepublic and its home market of Germany.
The highest new entry of the week comescourtesy of Paul Oakenfold's Starry EyedSurprise (Perfecto) at 39. Interestingly, StarryEyed Surprise utilises the same backing track(Ready Steady Go) as Oakenfold's previous hitSouthern Sun (Perfecto). The latter is still onthe chart, and ranks at number 21 this week.
This week's highest re-entry returns at num-ber 22 for Narcotic Thrust's Safe From Harm(YoshiToshi/ffrr). It is currently number one onthe Portuguese club chart and also tops the 12"
-Singles sales chart in the UK.Now it's the middle of August, we can legiti
mately start to ask "What has been the sum-mer hit of this season?" Well, it's not easy toanswer this year... and maybe it could be atrack that's not even available yet in centraland northern Europe. Following the provenrecipe of combining a song that everyone canhum with a new dance routine (such Kaoma'sLambada on Sony or Los Del Rio's Macarena),Asereje by Spanish act Las Ketchup (Columbia -Sony) has all the right ingredients. Havingtopped the Spanish singles chart for a numberof weeks, the track's now heating up in Italy.
THIS WEEK'S MOVERS1 Joy Don't Stop Joy Kitikonti (BXR/Media)2 Safe From Harm Narcotic Thrust (YoshiToshi/ffrr)3 Reason Ian van Dahl (Free-style/AM Records)4 Play With Me Boca (Dropout!/Alphabet City)5 Love Washes Over Art Of Trance (Platipus)6 The Theme Jorgen Vries (Direction/INCredible-Sony)7 Love & Evil Jean Jaques Smoothie (Echo/Chrysalis Publishing Group)
8 Diving 4 Strings (Liquid Records/Spinnin')9 It Just Won't Do Tim Deluxe feat. Sam Obernik (Underwater)10 Starry Eyed Surprise/Ready Steady Go Paul Oakenfold (Perfecto/Mushroom)
Movers are titles which show the greatest gains in points during the week.

ON THE AIRM&M's weekly airplay analysis column
Vanessa Carlton hangs on to the top spot inthis week's European Radio Top 50 for a sec-ond week with her A Thousand Miles on A&M.Elsewhere, Avril Lavigne is continuing herimpressive climb up the chart withComplicated (Arista), moving from number 31to 17, and topping the Most Added listing.
In addition to Carlton's number one slot, there's further good news for Universal in the
shape of RonanKeating, who jumps 20places to number 20with I Love It When WeDo (Polydor), MsDynamite, a new entryat 41 with It Takes More(Polydor), Island'sSugababes-who moveup 11 places to number22 with RoundRound-and thisweek's highest new
entry, Bon Jovi's (pictured) Everyday (Mercury).Copenhagen CHR station The Voice is one
of the many stations to have playlisted thenew Bon Jovi track. "We've put the song onmoderate rotation at the moment to see whathappens," says The Voice's head of musicFrederik Hallstrom. "It's a bit of an old schoolrockn'roll-type thing-I would definitely callit old school compared to the other rock stuffwe are playing, such as POD. I think it's hardto saythe last single was stronger, I think. Wehaven't had any response from our listenersyet, but then again we've only been playing itfor a week." Unlike some stations, The Voicehas not overtly altered its playlist to give it amore upbeat, summery feel.
"We haven't made any great changes to ourplaylist just for the summer," says Hallstrorn."We play a few classic summer songs, but alsogo with the current summer stuff, such asCreed for example, which creates a summervibe. A song that is definitely one of our sum-mer smash hits is a track called Walking OnWater by a Danish band clalled Zididada[EMI]. The track has a great summer feel toit-it's a happy pop song with a carefree atti-tude."
New in at number 49 this week followingthe massive European success of Dancing InThe Moonlight are UK act Toploader, withanother rousing tune in the form of Time OfMy Life (S2).
In next week'sairplay chart, lookout for Fantasy(Polydor), the newsingle by ex -AllSaints membersthe Appleton sis-ters (pictured),going under thename of Appleton.
Menwhile, Whitney Houston's new track,Whatchulookin at (Arista), stands at numbersix on the Most Added list and also looks well -placed to break into the top 50 next week. AndNorwegian '80s icons A -ha are back with abang. Their new offering Lifelines (WEA) cur-rently stands at number nine on the BorderBreakers chart, and looks set to enter themain airplay chart next week.

Primal Screamcontinued from page 1
Kevin Shields, DJ/producers AndyWeatherall, David Holmes andJagz Kooner, and even Gillespie'sone-time Jesus & Mary Chainband member Jim Reid.
A surging mix of electronicaand psychedelic rock, Evil Heatshows Primal Scream have clearlylost none of their uncompromis-ing, independent attitude. "It's amasterpiece," states CharlottaWagert, international marketingmanager at Columbia Records."Despite its many influences andmusical diversity, the overall feelis extremely cohesive".
But despite their cult status, not all programmers are findingthe band easy to place. MissLucifer has received support fromEurope's edgier public stations, such as Belgium's Radio 21, Nor-way's NRK Petre and Denmark'sDR P3, but most commercial sta-tions have simply found the it toouncommercial.
But UK digital and online sta-tion NME Radio Virgin, which isowned by weekly music magazineNME and programmed by rockstation Virgin Radio, is one non-public outlet that currently hasMiss Lucifer on rotation.
"It is quite a demanding listen,"says head of music James Curran."However it shows that PrimalScream are not happy to rest ontheir laurels and are constantlychallenging themselves artistically".
Supported by a strong video,Miss Lucifer has found music tele-vision more accommodating."We're off to a fantastic start-MTV have already given the tracknetwork priority," says Wagert.
Live appearances for the bandrecently have included a string ofEuropean festival dates that startedwith the Roskilde Festival in Den-mark in June, before moving on toBelgium's Seat Beach Rock Festivalon July 7 and the Arvika Festival inSweden on July 11. A variety of UKappearances kicked off on August 18at the V2002 Festival in Chelms-ford, Essex.
"It's a welcome return from aband who con-tinue to defytheir critics byalways sound-ing fresh andfull of venom,"believes AndyAshton (pic-tured), head ofmusic at Lon-don alternativerock station
Xfm. "There's not much chance ofthis bunch drifting into middle-agedobscurity!"
Still attracting controversy, albeit unintentionally, PrimalScream's track Bomb The Penta-gon was previewed live just priorto September 11. The band haverewritten and the song for inclu-sion on the album, re -christeningit Rise.
Breakfast war in Stockholmby Johan Lindstrom
grociworm - Competition isheating up in the Stockholm com-mercial radio market, with no few-er than three stations launchingnew breakfast shows this month.
After quitting his long -runningbreakfast show on MTG'sCHR/dance station Power HitRadio in May, Benjamin "Benji"Nilsson resurfaced on August 5 atrival CHR NRJ's new morningshow, NRJ Kalaset Med Benji &\Tanner.
"We are trying to base the showon Benji and his unique personali-ty, which he has developed succes-fully at Power," explains NRJ's pro-gramme director Daniel Akerman.
The show also features Stock-holm comedian Daniel Lindroth,NRJ producer Fredrik Werner andAlexandra Maric (pictured), whowas previously on Jesse Walling
and MartinLoogna'sbreakfast pro-grammes atAC stationsRix FM andMix Megapol.
"We are try-ing to develop
new di-mensions,
the .format andintroduce sev-eralin-cluding more
current affairs and listener interac-tion, while at the same time keepingthe comedy and the features," saysAkerman. "We feel that we candevelop Benji's personality morethan has been the case at Power."
Replacing Nilsson at Power HitRadio is a revamped version of The
Power Morning Show presetted by for-mer afternoon jock Micke S and Nils -son's old sidekick Marcel Robe (pic-
tured). According to Power Hit Radio'sprogramme director Robert Sehlberg, the new show will now focus more onStockholm and the station's core targetdemographic of 15 -25 -year -olds.
"We will develop new contestsand comedy features during theautumn, but the focus will remainon entertainment, music and con-tests," he says. "We have also pro-duced new jingles to accelerate thepace of the show."
After broadcasting its morningshow from Gothenburg, Stock-holm's SBS-owned Radio City hasreturned to a local programme withTV presenter Adam Alsing andRadio City presenter CharlotteLauterbach.
Using a new strapline-"Stock-holm's new number one"-in addi-tion to the old slogan, "100% hits",Radio City has tweaked its Hot ACformat to appeal to a slightlyyounger audience.
In the two weeks prior to theAugust 12 launch of the show, Citybroadcast non-stop music andrestricted the number of ads. Thestation says it hopes that its newbreakfast show will raise audienceshare from its current sub -4% levelto become the number one commer-cial station in Stockholm.
RTL buys AVEcontinued from page 1
However, Jurgen Filla, CEO ofRTL Radio Germany (pictured), iscautious about RTL's plans. "TheAVE stations have a good name,"he tells M&M. "We can offer themmuch and develop it together withthem, but the decisions will bemade by the local management."
Filla says it would be a matterfor each station to decide if it wantsto start using the RTL brand name."The RTL brand has considerablevalue and could strengthen a sta-tion. If the matter came up, we'dbe happy to discuss it and offerwhat we have. But if a station car-ries the RTL name, then it's reallygot to be [wholly -owned by] RTL,"he says.
There is speculation that RTLmay want to transfer the formerAVE stations' sales and marketingoperations to its own advertisingsales house IP-RTL has alreadyannounced that TV news channeln-tv, which it also aquired as partof the AVE deal with HoltzbrinckMedia, will be marketed by LP.
One advantage could be thedevelopment of joint radio -TVadvertising deals linked to one ofRTL's five German TV channels. This would be a major blow forGermany's two main radio adver-tising houses, RMS and AS&S.
RTL has paid Hotzbrinck euros170 million for n-tv and the AVEradio interests, the latter makingup half the deal. RTL Radio'sturnover was 75 million euros lastyear, AVE's 31.5 million. The UK'sCapital Radio group wasrumoured to be interested in theAVE holdings last year, but thedeal collapsed when Capital'sshare price fell.
Virgin plans to rockSMG business director, radio,
Bobby Hain (himself a former Vir-gin programme director), saysthat-if successful in its licenceapplication-the West Midlandsstation would adhere to thenational Virgin station's existingmusic policy of classic and contem-porary rock, although the station'soutput would be entirely locally -generated.
The West Midlands bid will bethe first in a planned series oflicence applications that Virginintends to make. It will thenmount a second RSL in Glasgowfrom January 3, in advance of aforthcoming city-wide licenceadvertisement there.
"I know for a fact having livedin Glasgow for so long, it's a rock-ing town," says Hain, "and if youlook at the heritage of the WestMidlands, there's a huge affinityto rock music of all types, so wesee two key opportunities for com-pletely localised Virgin Radio sta-tions."
Virgin is also prepared to con-template establishing a regional
locally continued from page 1
presence on FM through acquisi-tion. "If we were to acquire otherradio stations, might we use theVirgin name and branding? Theanswer is yes, if it was suitableand the format was empathetic,"says Hain.
He adds: "The idea of bringingglobally -known branding to a dif-ferent level of radio in this coun-try, regional and perhaps metro-politan and local radio, seems tous to be a way of creating a specialradio environment. That's a bit ofa sea change in what we've done, because traditionally we've hadVirgin as one station."
The move towards localisationcomes on the back of continuingaudience losses at the rock broad-caster-according to RAJAR, itsnational share of listening in thesecond quarter of 2002 was 1.2%,down from 1.6% a year ago and2.2% three years ago. There is alsoa recognition that the stationneeds to be on the FM, rather thanAM, band in order to appeal to thetype of audience it is trying toattract.

Vivendi Universal announces first half lossesby Hamish Champ
Vivendi Universal, the French -owned media andutility conglomerate which owns UniversalMusic Group (UMG), has announced losses forthe first half of this year of euros12.3 billion.
The losses follow a goodwill charge of eurosl 1billion written against a number of recentacquisitions, including a charge of euros 3.5billion relating to the music division.
Despite a record year-to-date current albummarket share figure in the US of approximately30%, with successes from such artists asEminem, Nelly and Sheryl Crow, overall groupmusic revenues were down 4% at euros 2.9billion for the first half of this year.
Operating income was down 28% on the sameperiod in 2001 at euros 169 million. Excludinggains on the sale of its interest in MTV Asia toViacom and disposals of other assets, the decline
mushroomed to 45%, year -on -year.According to the company, the "expected
lighter release schedule in the first quarter, combined with lower margins in the product mix'and increased A&R costs all contributed to thedecline".
Vivendi Universal's new chairman/CEOJean -Rene Fourtou, who replaced exitingchairman Jean-Marie Messier last month, noted that, with the company burdened bymore than euros 10 billion of debt over andabove what was deemed "comfortable", it wascommitted to selling euros 10 billions worth ofbusinesses over the next two years, half ofwhich would be completed in the next ninemonths.
Meanwhile, the company's credit rating wasdowngraded to "junk" status by US credit ratingagency Standard & Poors, and VU shares hadslumped 26% at the time of writing.
HOTLINEEdited by Jon Heasman & Hamish Champ
Following in the footsteps of France, Germanycould become the next major market to insistupon local -language airplay quotas. Hotlineunderstands that IFPI affiliate the BPW isabout to go public with to call upon whoeverwins the German election on September 22 toimplement a law which would require allGerman radio stations to play at least 50%German -language music.
Helge Track, COO at Hamburg -basedEdel Records Europe, is to leave thecompany he joined in 1990 before the end ofthis year. His resignation follows a period ofrestructuring which, he says, has left his ownposition redundant. Trilck will not bereplaced, and his duties will be carried out byEdel Music's CFO/COO Michael Baur.
And on the subject of Edel, expect anotherhigh -profile international artist to followChris Rea in signing for Jurgen Otterstein'sEdel-distributed label Tru Note.
One of BBC Radio l's longest -serving presenters, Mark Goodier,is to leave the UK public CHR stationafter 15 years. It's been a tough yearfor Goodier, who saw the broadcastdivision of his Wise Buddahproduction company collapse inMarch. Goodier's departure meansthat Radio 1 will also be revamping its flagshipSunday afternoon top 40 show, of whichGoodier was the host.
MTV UK & Ireland's digital dance music andclub culture channel MTV Dance is going 24 -hour (it currently only airs in the evenings). Thenew round-the-clock service will featuremainstream dance hits by day and moreunderground material by night.
Online music sales are forecast to accountfor 17% of all music revenues by 2007,according to new figures from ForresterResearch. Forrester says piracy is notresponsible for the 15% drop in sales in thepast two years-it points the finger at theeconomy and DVD sales instead.
New AOL Time Warner head of contentJeff Bewkes and his boss, AOLTWchairman/CEO Dick Parsons paid anunscheduled visit to Warner Music Group'sexecutive meeting, overseen by WMGchairman Roger Ames, in Barcelona lastweek. By all accounts, all the right thingswere said and everyone went home happy...
Stormclouds continue to gather for VirginRadio owner SMG. Cable TV companyTelewest has put its stake in SMG up for salein a move that analysts reckon could lead to abid or a break-up for the Scottish media group.
And finally, while we know of a few stationsaround Europe that have repelled their audiencerecently, Dutch AC station Radio Noordzee FMis planning to repel mosquitos... by broadcastingan inaudible ultrasonic frequency on top of itsregular FM signal. However, experts sayfrequencies higher than 15Mhz will be filteredout through broadcasting, and in any case it isstill not proven that mosquitos are deterred byhigh frequencies. Maybe they should do a bit ofmusic research on them...
