Music at Brasenose

Musical Events this Term
All concerts and events are held in the college chapel or antechapel unless otherwise stated
Second Week: Organ Recital – Christian Wilson
Wednesday, October 18th at 9pm Brasenose’s Director of Music performs a short 25-minute
Organ Recital of works from J S Bach’s Clavier-Übung III.
Third Week: Platnauer Concert – Schumann’s Dichterliebe
Friday, October 27th at 6pm Internationally-acclaimed baritone Marcus Farnsworth and
outstanding pianist Libby Burgess perform Schumann’s
greatest song-cycle together with Finzi’s Earh and Air and
Rain. Followed by refreshments in the Medieval Kitchen

Fourth Week: Freshers’ Recital – Welcoming JCR & HCR Freshers
Wednesday, November 1st at 7.30pm Come and hear new members of Brasenose JCR and HCR as
they reveal their multifarious talents on various instruments
and in a variety of styles in a laid-back recital.
All are welcome to perform!
Fifth Week: Organ Recital – Sarah Hughes
Wednesday, November 8th at 9pm Senior Organ Scholar Sarah Hughes performs a short, varied
recital on Brasenose Organ – followed by optional Compline.
Sixth Week: Under Milk Wood (with musical interludes)
Wednesday, Nov. 15th at 7.30pm Organ Scholar Fleur Snow and Tesni Jones direct and
Friday, Nov. 17th at 7.30pm produce, bringing Dylan Thomas’s celebrated play to
Saturday, Nov. 18th at 7.30pm life in the beautiful surroundings of Brasenose chapel.
Performed in the round with musical contributions.
Seventh Week: ‘Music at Brasenose’ Concert
Friday, November 24th at 6pm A hugely popular termly fixture! Come and delight in the
sheer variety and expertise of Brasenose musicians, including
Jazz, Folk & Classical music for bands, soloists and choir.
Eighth Week: Brasenose Advent Carol Service
Sunday, November 26th at 6pm A service of seasonal readings, popular congregational carols,
and choral works, with music led by the college choir.
Admission to all concerts and events is free of charge
The Platnauer Concert Series is named in honour of Maurice Platnauer (Principal of Brasenose 1956-1960).

Platnauer Concerts 2017-2018
Friday 27th October, 6pm Marcus Farnsworth & Libby Burgess
Winner of the Wigmore Hall International Song
Competition (2009) and the song prize at the Kathleen
Ferrier Competition (2011), baritone Marcus
Farnsworth is joined by one of the most original
accompanists of her generation, Libby Burgess, for a
performance of Robert Schumann’s exquisitely beautiful
Dichterliebe (settings of love poetry from Heine’s
Lyrisches Intermezzo). This will be followed by Gerald
Finzi’s cycle Earth and air and rain. Marcus and Libby
have performed at many of the landmark concert venues

Winner of the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin Competition
(2016) and numerous major competitions worldwide, Ziyu He
is quite simply a musical sensation. Recently becoming one of
the youngest ever soloists with the Vienna Philharmonic and
Marisnky Orchestras, he has won many of the major
competitions for violin and is already in huge demand at the
major concert halls across the world. Ziyu performs a virtuosic
and contrasting programme with English pianist Nicola

Friday 11th May, 6pm The David Rees-Williams Trio
Legendary jazz pianist David Rees-
Williams brings his celebrated trio to
Brasenose with a programme of classically-
inspired music. Regular guests on BBC
radio, the trio have performed at major jazz
festivals around the world, recording several
extremely well-received discs. Described as
‘the English Jacques Loussier’, David takes
jazz to a new level, integrating some of the
greatest themes in intelligent and original
ways. With Francis (bass) and Phil Laslett
