Welcome to the Spring Term at Uppingham Music and to our new Diary of Events.

Beethoven or Bebop – whatever your preference, we’ve got something to tickle your taste buds this term.

The Spring term opens with our biennial Chamber Music Festival, for which we are joined by the Schubert Ensemble of London, who perform the masterful Trout Quintet. We are thrilled to host three masterclasses this term, offering students the opportunity to receive coaching from renowned artists Susan Waters, Vanessa Latarche, and musicians from the Schubert Ensemble of London.

Student highlights include the unmissable Cocktails, Canapés and Cabaret event presented by Jazz Orchestra, and Concert Choir’s end-of-term visit to Saffron Hall, featuring two wonderful solo performances and Mozart’s incomparable Requiem.

L’incoronazione di PoppeaSinging Faculty with Peter Clements PianoOne of the first operas to use historical events and people, L’incoronazione di Poppea follows the story of Poppea, mistress of the Roman Emperor Nero, and her ambitions to be crowned empress. Uppingham’s Singing Faculty presents highlights from Monteverdi’s masterpiece, including Oblivion soave, Addio Roma and the evocative duet Pur ti miro.


Hugh Davies Oboe and Cor AnglaisSimon Smith Piano Upper Fifth student Hugh Davies presents a delightful programme of music featuring both the oboe and cor anglais, including favourites of the repertoire by Vivaldi, Grovlez and Vaughan-Williams.

9.5 and A Close ShaveUppingham School’s close harmony a cappella group 9.5 will be joined by A Close Shave for an evening of wonderful vocal music.

9.5 are made up of pupils who formed a group out of their love of singing. They bring a young and fresh feel to the a cappella scene, writing their own arrangements and drawing on inspiration from legends like The Swingle Singers, Voces8 and The Real Group.

A Close Shave are an a cappella quartet from Edinburgh University, featuring OU Flynn Le Brocq, and have a budding reputation from entertaining performances in and around Edinburgh. Flynn and the ensemble are delighted to be joining 9.5 in Uppingham for an evening of magnificent vocal performances.

Schubert Ensemble of LondonOne of the world’s leading exponents of music for piano and strings, the celebrated Schubert Ensemble of London perform a stirring programme which features Schubert’s iconic Trout Quintet, the work which made them famous. Prep Schools’ Orchestral Day Our famous annual orchestral extravaganza attracts up to 350 Prep School musicians from throughout the UK. Following a day of rehearsals, the concert is a spectacular event featuring String Orchestra, Wind Band and Symphony Orchestra. Piano Masterclasses with Vanessa Latarche Vanessa Latarche is Head of Keyboard and Professor of International Keyboard Studies at the Royal College of Music, having previously been a professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was made an Honorary Associate in 1997. We are delighted to welcome her to coach students from our Keyboard Faculty.

Vocal Masterclass with Susan Waters Highly-regarded Professor in the Faculty of Voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Susan Waters is known for her high profile work with advanced singers. She has coached artists from the National Opera Studio, Paris Conservatoire and Royal Opera House, and her former students now occupy positions in the Monteverdi Choir, Swingle Singers and Polyphony. A former Head of Singing at Uppingham School, we are delighted to welcome Susan back to coach students from the Singing Faculty.

Perhaps the most famous four notes in classical music? The opening to Beethoven’s glorious Fifth Symphony is instantly recognisable, one of the most well-known motifs in the orchestral repertoire.

Join Uppingham School’s Symphony Orchestra as they embrace a flair for the dramatic in an electrifying programme of orchestral greats. Jean Sibelius’ brooding tone poem Finlandia evokes the national struggle of the Finnish people, before Upper Sixth student Archie McAlpine features as the soloist in Richard Strauss’ bold and heroic Horn Concerto No. 1.

Uppingham School Concert Choir and Orchestra at Saffron HallFriday 31 March, 7pmFormed by over three hundred pupils and thirty staff, and accompanied by a professional orchestra, Uppingham School Concert Choir travels to Saffron Hall to present a performance of Mozart’s incomparable Requiem. Left unfinished at the composer’s death in 1791, Franz Süssmayr’s completion allows the work to be realised in its exquisite entirety.

Two exceptionally gifted Upper Sixth students display their solo talents in the first half of the concert. Recital Competition winner Francesca Moorhead is the soprano soloist in Mozart’s effervescent motet Exsultate, Jubilate and Alexander Howard-Vyse opens the programme with Richard Rodney Bennett’s dazzling Saxophone Concerto.

Friday Evening Concert SeriesOur Friday Evening Concert Series provides an inclusive performance platform for students throughout the School, where you can find students brand new to Uppingham playing alongside our Sixth Form music scholars and members of staff. Grease is one of the coolest musicals to ever grace the West End and Broadway stage. Set in a fictional High School, the show follows a group of boys and girls in their senior year as they deal with all sorts of teenage angst, from drive-ins to burger bars and teenage pregnancy. The show will be performed by our very own Uppingham students.

High Sheriff ’s Winter Festival and Musical SafariCelebrate winter with a safari around Uppingham town, taking in more than half a dozen different musical events, including Uppingham Jazz and Soul Band and the Military Wives’ Choir. Festive lights will welcome shoppers for bargain retail therapy, and the smells of tempting winter fare will waft across the market square. Expect everything from fire-eaters to magicians; warm chestnuts, vin chaud and even a hog roast. A treasure hunt will provide fun and prizes for all the family.

This event will raise money for the High Sheriff of Rutland’s three charities – Hope Against Cancer, Warning Zone and For Rutland, all of which help people in our area.

Music Scholarships and ExhibitionsScholarships are awarded annually to children of exceptional talent assessed through audition and interview. Scholarship awards may be made either for evidence of a high level of attainment and promise, or exceptional specialist aptitude. Uppingham’s Music Scholarships are offered to talented musicians who can contribute to the life of a seven-day a week boarding community through high music achievement. The awards range in value up to half of the school fees, plus remission of instrumental or vocal tuition fees on two instruments, with the option of a third at the discretion of the Director of Music. Music Exhibitions are also awarded annually to candidates and carry remission of instrumental or vocal tuition fees.
