Verbum caro factum est sung by the choir Hans Leo Hassler Verbum caro factum est, et habitavit in nobis; et vidimus gloriam ejus, gloriam quasi unigeniti a Patre, plenum gratiae et veritatis.

The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us: and we beheld his glory, the glory of the only begotten by the Father, full of grace and truth.

Carol: Angels, from the realms of glory sung by all Regent Square • Hymnal 93

Away in a manger sung by the choir W.J. Kirkpatrick; arr. John Sanders

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head; the stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay. The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, and stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay close by me forever, and love me, I pray! Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, and fit us for heaven to live with thee there.

O magnum mysterium sung by the choir Tómas Luis de Victoria

O magnum mysterium, et admirable sacramentum ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentum in praesepio! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. Alleluia!

O great mystery, and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the new born Lord, lying in their manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia

Carol: What child is this sung by all Greensleves • Hymnal 115

The holly and the ivy sung by the choir English traditional carol; arr. H. Walford Davies

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown. The rising of the sun and the running of the deer, the playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a blossom, as white as the lily flower; and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, to be our sweet Savior. The rising of the sun and the running of the deer, the playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a berry, as red as any blood; and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, for to do us sinners good. The rising of the sun and the running of the deer, the playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a prickle, as sharp as any thorn, and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, on Christmas day in the morn. The rising of the sun and the running of the deer, the playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a bark, as bitter as any gall; and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, for to redeem us all. The rising of the sun and the running of the deer, the playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir. The holly and the ivy, when they are both full

THE BLESSING OF THE CRÈCHE

O GOD whose blessed Son first came to us as a helpless infant: Bless this crèche in

remembrance of his birth as our Savior; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, Thou hast given us a new revelation of thy loving providence in

the Coming of thy Son Jesus Christ to be born of the Virgin Mary: Grant that as he shared our mortality, so we may share his eternity in the glory of thy kingdom; where he liveth and reigneth for ever and ever. Amen.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN (CONCLUSION) Once in royal David’s city, st. 4-6 • Irby • Hymnal 102 sung by congregation

OPENING ACCLAMATION

THE COLLECT FOR PURITY

ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets

are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Sung by the choir Harold Darke • BCP p. 324

GLORY be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord; thou only O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE COLLECT FOR CHRISTMAS

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray.

O GOD, who hast caused this holy night to shine with the illumination of the true Light: Grant

us, we beseech thee, that as we have known the mystery of that Light upon earth, so may we also perfectly enjoy him in heaven; where with thee and the Holy Spirit he liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE WORD OF GODI

The people are seated for the Old Testament Lesson, Psalm, and Epistle.

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON God comes to restore the people • Isaiah 62:6-12

UPON your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted sentinels; all day and all night they shall never be

silent. You who remind the LORD, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it renowned throughout the earth. The LORD has sworn by his right hand and by his mighty arm: I will not again give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink the wine for which you have labored; but those who garner it shall eat it and praise the LORD, and those who gather it shall drink it in my holy courts. Go through, go through the gates, prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones, lift up an ensign over the peoples. The LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to daughter Zion, "See, your salvation comes; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him." They shall be called, "The Holy People, The Redeemed of the LORD"; and you shall be called, "Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken."

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL PSALM Sung by the choir Dominus regnavit • Psalm 97

Chant: Walter Parratt

1 The LORD is King; let the earth rejoice; * let the multitude of the isles be glad.

2 Clouds and darkness are round about him, * righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne.

3 A fire goes before him * and burns up his enemies on every side.

4 His lightnings light up the world; * the earth sees it and is afraid.

5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, * at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6 The heavens declare his righteousness, * and all the peoples see his glory.

7 Confounded be all who worship carved images and delight in false gods! * Bow down before him, all you gods.

8 Zion hears and is glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice, * because of your judgments, O LORD.

Page 7: Music for the Nativityfiles.constantcontact.com/95af78f3401/b08bc458-6bb1-4a3a-b75f-f7… · OPENING ACCLAMATION THE COLLECT FOR PURITY ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open,

9 For you are the LORD, most high over all the earth; * you are exalted far above all gods.

10 The LORD loves those who hate evil; * he preserves the lives of his saints and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

11 Light has sprung up for the righteous, * and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted.

12 Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, * and give thanks to his holy Name.

THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON (EPISTLE) Saved through water and the Spirit • Titus 3:4-7

WHEN the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because

of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL The birth of the Messiah revealed to the shepherds • Luke 2:1-20

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

AND it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all

the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David,) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the

highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The people are seated for the Sermon.

THE SERMON Becky McDaniel

The people stand for the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People.

THE NICENE CREED Said by all

WE believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,

seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each intercession

We pray to thee, O Lord: Lord, hear our prayer.

Final intercession

Joining our voices with the blessed Virgin Mary, and all the saints and angels of God, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To thee, O Lord.

Concluding Collect

Source of light and gladness, accept the prayers we offer on this joyful feast. May the Rising Sun of Christ spread across the world and brighten all humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

YE who do truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and are in love and charity with your

neighbors, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.

All kneel.

ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We

acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of

sins to all who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All stand for the Peace.

THE PEACE

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit.

The people greet one another with a sign of God’s peace and then are seated.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM Tomorrow shall be my dancing day • John Gardner

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: I would my true love did so chance to see the legend of my play, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love. Then was I born of a virgin pure, of her I took fleshly substance: thus was I knit to man’s nature, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love. In a manger laid and wrapped I was, so very poor, this was my chance, betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love. Then afterwards baptized I was; the Holy Ghost on me did glance, my Father’s voice heard from above, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING – EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II The Book of Common Prayer, p. 340

IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give

thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God.

BECAUSE thou didst give Jesus Christ, thine only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty

power of the Holy Ghost, was made very Man of the substance of the Virgin Mary his mother; that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become thy children.

THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and

magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Sung by the choir Darke • BCP p. 341

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The people may kneel or remain standing. The presider continues with the Eucharistic Prayer. BCP p. 341

ALL glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst

make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

FIRST ANTHEM DURING COMMUNION King Jesus hath a garden • Dutch Tune; har. Charles Wood

King Jesus hath a garden, full of divers flowers, where I go culling posies gay, all times and hours. There naught is heard but Paradise bird, harp, dulcimer, lute with cymbal, trump and tymbal, and the tender, soothing flute. The Lily, white in blossom there, is Chastity: the Violet, with sweet perfume, Humility. There naught is heard but Paradise bird, harp, dulcimer, lute with cymbal, trump and tymbal, and the tender, soothing flute. The bonny Damask-rose is known as Patience: the blithe and thrifty Marygold, Obedience. There naught is heard but Paradise bird, harp, dulcimer, lute with cymbal, trump and tymbal, and the tender, soothing flute. The Crown Imperial bloometh too in yonder place, ‘tis Charity, of stock divine, the flower of grace. There naught is heard but Paradise bird, harp, dulcimer, lute with cymbal, trump and tymbal, and the tender, soothing flute. Yet, ‘mid the brave, the bravest prize of all my claim the Star of Bethlehem, Jesus, blessed be his Name! There naught is heard but Paradise bird, harp, dulcimer, lute with cymbal, trump and tymbal, and the tender, soothing flute. Ah! SECOND ANTHEM DURING COMMUNION Nativity carol • John Rutter

Born in a stable so bare, born so long ago; born ‘neath light of star he who loved us so. Far away silent he lay, born today, your homage pay, for Christ is born for aye, born on Christmas Day. Cradled by mother so fair, tender her lullaby; over her son so dear angel hosts fill the sky. Far away silent he lay, born today, your homage pay, for Christ is born for aye, born on Christmas Day. Wise men from distant far land, shepherds from starry hills worship this babe so rare, hearts with his warmth he fills. Far away silent he lay, born today, your homage pay, for Christ is born for aye, born on Christmas Day. Love in that stable was born into our hearts to flow; innocent dreaming babe, make me thy love to know. Far away silent he lay, born today, your homage pay, for Christ is born for aye, born on Christmas Day.
