MUSIC INDUSTRYCONFERENCEFRIDAY 13TH & SATURDAY 14TH NOVEMBER 2015ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE

WELCOMEWelcome to Face The Music.

November in Melbourne is a great time for the music industry to gather at Face The Music each year, with so many exciting music and industry-related events in town at the one time.

When Steve Albini’s 2014 Face The Music address on the future of the music business reverberated around the world, it also put Face The Music on the map as a boutique development summit and a forum for ideas.

This year, once again, we bring you contemporary music’s larger-than-life characters, critical thinkers and industry leaders from across the world and Australia. Together we will reflect on 2015’s issues and challenges, keep on top of the ever-changing music business landscape, discuss new ideas and envision new directions in music.

Face The Music is a great opportunity to brush up on your knowledge of current industry issues, share your knowledge and meet some new music people. With 40 different panels, workshops, meetings and parties, there is a lot going on. We encourage you to get out to enjoy some of Melbourne’s live music and continue your Face The Music experience into the night.

Thanks go to Face The Music’s partners and sponsors and to our small organising team who are listed in this program, who help to bring Face The Music alive.

Please download the Face The Music App and join me on the delegate database, find the sessions that are right for you and be part of the conversation.

Don’t forget that The Australasian World Music Expo is also on downstairs at Arts Centre Melbourne and has talks and panels that are free with your Face The Music accreditation. Please come and say hello.

Laneway Presents) Susan Heymann (General Manager, Touring,

(CHI)

For one of the most risky gigs in the business, being a tour promoter is hugely popular. So does it pay off? The biggest promoters and festival bookers discuss deals, budgets, visas and how to tell if a band is hype or has genuine paying fans. Do agents pitch bands to festival bookers holding the purse strings? Or are festival organisers and promoters beholden to the carefully crafted touring cycles of acts? What are realistic margins and fair offers? Do festival slots underpin a tour? What do promoters look for in supports? What impact could globalisation of touring and festivals have on the Australian market? And how does this affect growing opportunities in Asia? In a session not to be missed by any band, agent, manager, emerging festival organiser or promoter, local and international experts at the very top of the game dissect the touring and festival circuit.

Hordes of ambitious, well-educated young go-getters have their sights set on the Australian music industry’s juiciest jobs. Musicians seem to be ‘earning their chops’ at a much younger age too. Meanwhile, the local music job market is extremely competitive and hard to crack. The sector is filling with micro businesses and sole traders providing innovative services but often not hiring. How can you stand out from the job-seeking pack? What music business skills do you need as an aspiring artist so you can give it your best shot? Or should you forget about being employed and start your own business? Industry experts answer your questions and give you tips to get your foot in the door.

It’s an exciting year for contemporary music, with the Victorian Government’s Music Works initiative providing new funding for tours, websites, recordings and more, including new quick-response grants for special opportunities that just need a quick YES. All artists can apply and now music businesses can too, although only about 20% of grant applications can be funded at any one time. In this session, Creative Victoria’s grant team help you think about how your application can cut through, focusing on two areas of grant information that often let applications down - budgeting and marketing.

VINYL: RECORD STORE DAY AND OTHER PRESSING MATTERSPresented by Melbourne Music Week Saturday November 1411.25am - 12.25pmArts Centre Melbourne, Theatres Building, Members’ Dining Room (Level 7)

Moderator: Nicholas Jones (Co-Founder & Managing Director, Tone Deaf)

Nic Warnock (RIP Society and Repressed Records)Paul Rigby (Owner, vinyl plant Zenith Records)Sara Hood (Manager, Record Store Day Australia)Chris Gill (Northside Records)

The resurgence of vinyl has helped resuscitate another flagging music business - the independent record store. The international phenomenon of Record Store Day has breathed new life into a bricks-and-mortar retail experience prematurely consigned to history. But commercial success has seen the popular event cause headaches for the very industry it’s trying to support, as mass orders for the big day jam up pressing facilities, stalling small orders for indie bands. We brainstorm ways our industry can get the most mileage out of worldwide RSD and safeguard against becoming victims of the album-less album launch.

Our choice of music has never been more accessible, portable, inexpensive and convenient. With streaming services, we can all walk around with our dream record collection in our pocket. Masses of new data about domestic downloads and new streaming services are still being analysed by experts at peak bodies and collection agencies. Meanwhile, we ask them what the research seems to be showing and whether promised revenue streams and benefits are actually finding their way to artists and other rights holders. And we explore options available to the industry so we can better understand advances in technology and don’t get left behind in its wake.

PUBLIC IMAGE UNLIMITED: HOW MUSIC PUBLICISTS REACH OUT IN THE DIGITAL WORLD Saturday November 141.25 - 2.25pmNational Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Clemenger Auditorium

Moderator: Larry Heath (Editor, the AU review)

Fred Pessaro (Editor-in-Chief, Noisey) (US) Ben Preece (Director, Mucho Bravado)Monique Rothstein (Director, Positive Feedback) Heidi Braithwaite (Director, Riot House Publicity)

Like every pillar of the music business, the digital revolution has been a game-changer for music publicists. Traditional media like print, radio and television still hold sway, as do well-written press releases and eye-catching press shots. But digital platforms - from streaming and social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to cool musicblogs and aggregators like Hypemachine - have transformed the way music publicists present their clients. Music’s top communicators discuss strategy - how to choose the right platform, how to get your pitch right and how to maximise publicity opportunities for a band, venue or tour.

Feathers flew during robust debate at Face The Music’s “Hens In The Cock House” session last year about gender equality in music. Here we analysed the challenges facing the music community to increase equal access for women to industry opportunities. It was an uncomfortable yet powerful discussion that sparked some new ideas. One year on, discourse around this issue has only intensified, with Pitchfork editor Jessica Hopper’s recent Twitter campaign highlighting problems on an international scale. We revisit the space with fresh eyes, looking at some of the initiatives that have since sprung up, accelerating conversation to action.

Dr Motte (Founder, Love Parade)Dr Stuart Braun (Author, City of Exiles: Berlin From The

Immersed in punk and electronic subcultures, Berlin has long held a creative allure for Melbourne’s music makers – attracting acts such as The Birthday Party, Ash Wednesday, Mick Harvey and the late James Cruickshank in the early ‘80s and influencing Melbourne’s rave scene in the ‘90s. This captivation is still evident in the artistic pilgrimages that continue today. We are joined by Dr. Motte, founder of Berlin’s Love Parade, Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten / Die Haut / Automat), Berlin-based writer of City Of Exiles Stuart Braun and electronic producer and lecturer David Haberfeld (aka Honeysmack) to discuss the grit and glitz of musically-inspired urban subcultures. The session will also explore the influence of Geniale Dilletanten, Germany’s formative era of musical upheaval 1979-84, the subject of a visiting exhibition currently at RMIT Gallery. Presented by the Goethe-Institut as part of the Urban Subcultures series.
