The composer James Oswald (1710-1769) was born in Crail, Fife, and later lived in Edinburgh. At aged

31 he moved to London and published a great collection of Scottish traditional music, the “Caledonian Pocket Companion.” The melody was

used by Robert Burns for his song “The Border

Widow’s Lament.”

Pentland Hills

Pentland Hills (James Oswald) air

Nigel Gatherer’s Scottish Collection

In Flores Musicae (c1773) the title of this tune is given as The Battle of Pentland Hills, but there is no feel of a battle in this tune. Oswald (1710-1769) published it in the final volume of his “Caledonian Pocket Companion” collection in c1769.

The English CollectionShepherd &

Two very old English dance tunes. John Johnson published eight volumes of 200 tunes each in the mid-18thC, including many Scots tunes which were popular at the time.

Isle of Capri

The Tango CollectionIsle of Capri (Will Grosz) tango

Wilhelm Grosz (1894-1939) was an Austrian composer who fled his native land for the UK in 1934. His serious works didn’t fare as well as his popular songs, of which Isle of Capri and Red Sails in the Sunset were the most well known.

My Jealous Eyes

The Tango CollectionMy Jealous Eyes (Mack David/Martita) tango

The lyrics for this song were written by New Yorker Mack David (elder brother of Hal David), and the music was by Martita (a pen name for Margery Cummings). It was released on the B-side of patti Page’s big hit How Much Is that Doggie in the Window?

The Shetland Collection

The great Shetland fiddler and collector Tom Anderson composed this air in the mid-1960s while driving along Weisdale Voe (a “voe” is a sort of mini fjord). It was originally in the key of F, but I’ve transposed it so that we can all enjoy it.
