MUSIC THEORY RESOURCES for GRADUATE REVIEW These resources can be used to prepare for the music theory diagnostic exam required of all entering graduate students in music at Radford University. It is recommended to begin preparation by reviewing the areas listed below drawn from undergraduate curricula previously studied. The exam is considered to be of a difficulty similar to the material covered in the fourth semester of most undergraduate music programs. Questions in the music theory exam are drawn from the following areas: 1. Roman numeral analysis of given passages, key analysis, and modulation procedures 2. Recognition of nonchord tones 3. Recognition of standard formal types 4. Writing of chords, from given Roman numerals or figured bass symbols 5. Harmonization of melodies 1. Provide a Roman numeral analysis of the score on the following page. A corrected musical example is also provided. Be sure to identify the modulations clearly. Also be sure to label secondary dominant and borrowed chords using appropriate symbols. Identification of non-chord tones is not required.
