Processing Initiative Launched

The Consumers Energy Foundation announced this week a $232,000 grant to launch a regional food processing initiative designed to grow and expand West Michigan’s substantial agriculture economy. The grant is the result of more than five years of studies and discussions with local stakeholders surrounding the 2016 closing of Consumers Energy’s B.C. Cobb Plant

Above, a trifecta of Consumers Energy veterans in Muskegon Monday helped launch the West Michigan Shoreline Food Processing Initiative. From left is Bill Johanson, a 33-year CE retiree; Carolyn Bloodworth, the company’s director of corporate giving; and Roger Morgenstern, senior West Michigan spokesman. The three were captured inside Kitchen 242 in Downtown Muskegon and smiling because Carolyn brought a $232,000 check from the Consumers Energy Foundation to launch the initiative, which will be run by fellow Rotarian Marty Gerencer, right. This initiative should help create jobs and generate a ripple effect throughout the local economy.” The initiative is focused on Muskegon and West Michigan for

several reasons, including: >>>

>>> Strategic access to prime fruit and vegetable growers and proximity to other agricultural suppliers; Access to underutilized wastewater treatment capacity;

Michigan’s fresh water capacity;

Michigan’s growing renewable energy sector and the ability to market fruits and vegetables produced using renewable energy, and

Logistic and distribution attributes. Muskegon is home to West Michigan’s largest commercial deep water port with easy access to rails and highways. Proposed cross-lake shipping provides direct links to western U.S. and Asian markets.

Fighting Polio

The road to eradicating polio has been long and difficult with Rotary leading the fight since 1965. Going from nearly 350,000 cases in 1988 to just 11 so far this year has required time, money, dedication, and innovation from thousands working to end the disease. Here are five things that have happened to eradicate polio:

1. Ice cream factories in Syria are helping by freezing the ice packs that health workers use to keep the polio vaccine cold during immunization campaigns. 2. Celebrities have become ambassadors in the fight to end the disease. They include golf legend Jack Nicklaus, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu, anthropologist Dr Jane Goodall, world renowned violinist and polio survivor Yitzhak Perlman and of course Bill Gates. 3. Health workers and Rotary volunteers have climbed mountains, crossed deserts and sailed to remote islands, risking their lives to vaccinate children against this disease. Rotary. Rotary has funded more than 1,500 motorbikes and 6700 other vehicles, as well as 17 boats to make those journeys. Vaccinators have even traveled on the backs of elephants, donkeys, and camels to immunize children in remote areas. 4. In Pakistan, the polio program emphasizes hiring local female vaccinators and monitors. More than 21,000 vaccinators, 83% of whom are women, are achieving the highest immunization coverage rates in the country's history. 5. More than 16 million people who otherwise might have been paralyzed are walking today. In all more than 2.5 billion children have been vaccinated since 1988.

Thank you, District 6290 Rotarians, for your generosity to The Rotary Foundation and its

fight to eradicate polio. Your friendly District Governor, Edward C. Swart

Last Week’s Program

Become a 1 in 21 Champion

by RIM Reporter Meredith Smillie

Speakers: Lisa Sabourin, right; Jeff Fortenbacher, below; and Linda Juarez, below right.

Program Objective: Support making our community a healthier place to live, learn, work and play. Muskegon County 1 in 21 presented on how Muskegon Rotarians can partner together

to achieve their vision to make Muskegon County the healthiest county in Michigan by 2021. The launch of 1

in 21 Healthy Muskegon County was prompted by the low results Muskegon County received in

the County Health Rankings. The County Health Rankings, produced by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, are based on a model of population health that emphasizes the many factors that, if improved, can help make communities healthier places to live, learn,

work and play. Since implementation in March 2011, Muskegon County has moved from 82nd in the state to 67th on 57 health indicators.

You can get more involved with 1 in 21 by visiting their website: www.1in

21.org; via Facebook on HealthyMuskegonCounty; or by clicking the link at the bottom of this article. 1 in 21 will partner with you by setting healthy goals for organizations to achieve over the year by providing peer support and resources.
