Dear Friends and Members,

Are you feeling the excitement in the air?? It appears we now have a club website that works and people are using it. After our last club meeting, Adam Pletcher and I had a brief discussion about monitoring our new website and who is

using it, how much they are using it, and what pages they are visiting. I asked Adam to update this infor-mation for this article. Here is the exciting news:

! During the past 30 days (October 1-October 31), we had 118 hits on our website which is down 18% from the previous month – makes sense as the show season came to a close in September and early October. September hits would have been about 140 hits.

! Out of the 118 hits, 335 pages were read in October alone.

! Each hit lasted two minutes and three seconds.! One less than exciting note – the bounce rate was

42% which represents those that reviewed our home page and did not go further. We need to try and get that percentage down.

! The top five pages that were accessed were: #1

Home page; #2 Upcoming Events; #3 Photo Gallery; #4 Past Newsletters; and, #5 Club Merchandise.

These top five sites tell us what interests users have and what they want to know. Now our challenge is to continue providing new information for people to read; and, to work harder on those other pages to draw more attention to the many other pages and nuggets of information. Adam has not only provided a simple, usable website, but I would expect we have never had 258 people interested in our club/ website in the past 6-8 years! We can also glean peoples’ interests and what they want to see in a club. Our challenge is going to be to keep the website current, provide new photos,

and listing our activities, while steering them to the other pages of information. A

HUGE thank you goes to Adam Pletcher for all his design work, making the correct changes,

while saving us a large sum of money. If we do our job, keep updates as a

priority, and present useful information, we are on track to having

an excellent avenue to help us grow in membership, show participant and

a true information center to promote our love of the iconic Mustang. Happy Thanksgiving from Jan and I (and Charlie Brown, Woodstock and Snoopy, too). Respectfully submitted,

time. However, do not exceed the maximum air pressure listed on the sidewall of the tires. But, remember to recheck them in the spring as part of your normal spring startup process. While radial tires seldom “flat spot” from setting extended lengths of time, if you have the equipment, safely placing the car on jack stands will take the pressure off the tires. This is especially important if your older Mustang has correct bias-ply tires. Finish by applying protectant to the tires and wax to the wheels. 4) The Mustang Battery: Keep it charged! Here you have several options. Of course, you can start the car every couple of weeks, even driving it for about 15 minutes, but that means taking it out from its hibernation. This should maintain the battery’s charge, and keep the engine and other components lubricated. If you choose this method, run the systems such as the air conditioner to refresh the air in the car. A second option is to simply disconnect the negative terminal. This will remove potential minute drains on the battery, but you’ll loose electronic settings. The third option is to use a battery tender, or trickle charger, to maintain the battery’s charge level. I purchased a digital charger that will charge the battery to the correct voltage and then converts to a tender once charged. It successfully kept Vista Blue’s battery at full charge all winter long. Mine’s a

DieHard® DH138 that charges up to 15 amps and converts to a 3 amp, multi-stage circuit for maintaining

without over charging. It was about 29 bucks at Menards. 5) Give me a Brake: In this case, don’t give me a brake. That is, do not apply the parking/emergency brakes. If needed, use wheel chocks instead. 6) Keeping the Critters Out: You know this: garages and storage buildings attract rodents as the weather cools, and your Mustang is a choice resting place for a winter stay for mice and other

destructive pests. Suggestions here are to close off openings to the engine, including intake and exhaust. For the exhaust, ideas range from steel wool to balled up socks. Combining the two allows air and moisture to escape. Keep the windows closed tight, too. Some have suggested placing moth balls in the interior and

under the hood, or to use dryer sheets. Personally, moth balls would be a last resort, or should I say, a “lasting” resort as they’ll stay with you for the rest of your ownership! Mousetraps work well outside the car, but never put them inside your Mustang. Finding a dead mouse melted into your seats or carpet in the spring will not be a good

thing. Always observe safe placement to avoid hazards for your pets. 7) Placement: Before you choose the final resting place for your Mustang, be it a garage or other type of storage, consider the space and

Your editor temporarily places the battery charger on the windshield on a cloth. In my final preparations, I actually place the charger on top of the cover so I can keep an eye on it. You’ll also note the wood block used to raise the wiper arm off the glass to take the stress off the rubber blade.

Shows & EventsHORSIN’ AROUND! November, 2020Hibernating your Mustang...

If you have a Mustang or Ford story, a great garage, man cave or she shed you’re proud of, by all means contact the editor with your write-up and a few photos. We’ll do our best to get it in a future issue of Horsin’ Around.

Your Story, please...

Continued from page fourwhat is around it. If you’re like me, you still have to get to “things” that reside around the garage. Anticipate the need to get around the car for that show shovel or car jack and allow access as needed. If you plan to work on your Mustang over the winter, that may require different placement. I plan to replace the headlights and add lower fog lights to Vista Blue yet this fall, so I’ll need to allow space for removing the front bumper. Again, plan ahead for your projects.7) Cover charge. There are lots of options for covering up your pride and joy from a $25 universal-fit cover to a model-specific, high-quality $300-plus design. The padding on a thicker cover can protect the finish from the potential bumps while you move around in the garage. I usually place a thick, old blanket along the side to prevent the door on the “other car,” from accidentally bumping or denting Vista Blue when in a hurry or when moving packages in and out for Christmas. If you must store your car outside, you’ll want a waterproof cover that allows for secure attachment so high winds don’t blow it off. If you are placing your car inside, the cover should be breathable, yet allows moisture to escape. And, if your Mustang has an occasional leak, you may want to place a tarp on the

floor before you roll it into place. This make for easier garage cleaning in the spring. In addition to a car cover, consider a vehicle jacket. You just drive your Mustang into the jacket, place the soft car cover over it (this is still a must), and zip up the outer plastic jacket. This provides added protection from rodents, moisture, dust and rust. In my research, I read about a Michigan man with lakefront property who stored a ’66 Chevelle convertible, stripped of paint. Even after one winter, he noted, “there was not a lick of surface rust.” Again, make sure your Mustang is completely dry and cool before putting any kind of cover or jacket on it. Remove the antenna, if possible, and put it inside or in the trunk. Vista blue’s simply unscrews from the mount as do most Mustang antennas. Also, take a last look in the trunk and interior for any items you’ll want such as your phone charger.

Many of the articles used in providing this Mustang hibernation plan included suggestions for awaking it back up in the spring. I figured to hold that until perhaps the February or March newsletter, so stay tuned.

I use a basic cover, and often place soft, clean blankets over the cover to help keep bumping the exterior to a minimum and help keep dust from filtering through the cover. I remove the antenna and place the battery charger outside the cover as noted on page seven.

If you have other ideas or can offer further thoughts or corrections, contact Editor, Tom Welsh before December 1st.

LaFontaine Ford of Birch Run held a mid-week, all makes cars show back on Tuesday, July 28th. The afternoon show was held from five to seven and garnered lots of support from the Mustang Club of Mid Michigan (MCMM). In support of the attendees, LaFontaine supplied a light lunch with sandwiches, chips and beverages. Show planners were able to obtain several fabulous and famous Fords from Ford Motor Company to add to the list of attendees. Included were the 10,000,000th Mustang, a heritage Ford GT, and their latest Shelby Mustangs like the new GT500. There were a few non-Fords in attendance, but most were Ford’s iconic Mustang. LaFontaine Ford of Birch Run has been a MCMM sponsor for several years. As with shows at Midland Ford, American Gasser, and McDonald Ford, our club supports our sponsors for their show events.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all in the Ford World, a couple of rather unique Fords were seen recently. The F-150 Raptor was

sent to me by son-in-law, Dan Burr, from one of their camping trips. While I’ve always disliked light blue for a car/truck color, there is just something about the light blue/orange Gulf color scheme that I’ve always been very fond of. It looks best, of course, on Ford GT’s and Porsche race cars, but I’ve seen it on a few newer Mustangs, too, and it suits them quite well, too. And the white Mustang below? I was headed across Saginaw a few weeks ago and saw it go by me on South Washington Avenue headed north. I cut over to M-46 by the YMCA and caught it headed west. Looking closely, it appears to be all or four wheel

drive, but I didn’t see a differential up front, at least it wasn’t showing as the rear one is. I couldn’t catch it due to traffic lights so I can’t tell you any more. I contacted Rick Montagne regarding Christmas party reservations, and he noted that there are 29 of you that have sent in your R.S.V.P’s. With a limit of 40, to allow for save physical distancing, there is room for 11 more members. See the party information on page nine for full information. Hope to see you there! Finally, if you haven’t had a chance to send in your 2021 Board of Director’s ballot, please do so today. There is a place on the ballot to list a few club suggestions for 2021 programs, meetings, or what ever is on your mind. Ideas are always welcome.

One of our members that owns a newer Mustang had a warning show up on their dashboard display. It said, “Tire Pressure Monitor System Fault.” It was noted that it was not the warning icon for Low Air Pressure, but without really understanding the warning, all of the tire pressures were checked, adding air above the recommended pressure, and then lowering it back down to the correct pressure. The warning continued, so the Mustang was taken to a local tire retailer to see if they could diagnose the issue. Turns out, this seldom-seen warning indicated that one if the tire monitors mounted in two wheels were at fault due to failed batteries in both front wheels; the rears were OK. The tire dealer noted that these batteries can fail anywhere from five to ten years leading to the Fault warning. The only option is to replace the monitors with new ones. The wheels on the member’s car were aftermarket wheels, but understood from the tire dealer that it happens to both aftermarket wheels as well as original equipment wheels in about the same number of years. Pictured, an ’06-’08 Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor (TPMS) from the AmericanMuscle.com web site. TPMS’s range in price from $28.99 to $40.71, each, plus tax, shipping and installation, that must include rebalancing the tire/wheel assembly. The site offers a set of four for $156.95 with free shipping. OEM sensors are different, and are attached to the center of the wheels. If you install replacement TPMS’s yourself or by a tire dealer, your Mustang (or other Ford product) needs to be trained to read the new sensors. Check out Late Model Restoration for a video on the process at https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwji-6Sxrf7sAhUTU80KHWWJCQAQwqsBMAR6BAgREAY&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DniteshTnX-U&usg=AOvVaw19nKjoIDIg_2QmrZtm4SzE The manual in my Vista Blue does mention this fault, but doesn’t give a reason for the fault... It just says to consult your dealer for more help. Hope you enjoyed this information update for your ’07 and newer Mustang.

Tire warning Michigan No-Fault Insurance By now, you have undoubtedly made adjustments to your auto insurance policy due to the changes in the no-fault law that changed last July. If, for some reason you missed it, be sure to contact your agent to understand the changes and what your options are. Your editor’s insurance was reduced substantially from last year with my current policy holder, by changing from unlimited medical to a lower level, and by using my Medicare and BCBS secondary insurance in place of the standard “PIP Medical” offered by my carrier. Check out our sponsors, Bone & Bailey, Midland, page 15; Farmers Insurance, Owosso, page 14; or MyMember Insurance Agency, Saginaw, page eight, and see what they can do to reduce your insurance costs.
