From The Principals Desk... Happy New Year and welcome back to Mitchell Hepburn for the 2019 year. The students and staff are excited to get back to work and develop the necessary skills for them to be successful. It is going to be a busy next six months for sure. Our grade 8 students will be visiting the high schools during the first week as they open their doors to all grade 8’s and show what they have to offer. AVSS will host on Tuesday night, CECI on Wednesday night and PCI on Thursday night. Each open house is at 7 pm and anyone is invited to visit any of the three high schools. If you know anyone that has a child turning four years old by the end of 2019, please let them know they can register their child for kindergarten staring January 21 st . It is important to have them register over the next couple of months to allow us to staff our classes according to the number of registered students. Good luck to our intermediate girls and boys basketball teams. Both teams are in action the first week back as they start their schedules on Wednesday and Thursday. I look forward to watching both teams this season as it looks like they are going to be strong contenders in the region and in the valley. The staff would like to thank the School Council for their gift before the Christmas Break. Each classroom received a gift of $400 for the classroom teacher to purchase needed supplies and to help defer trip costs during the year. The staff are using the funds in a variety of ways to help support student learning. Our next School Council Meeting is Monday, January 14 th at 6:30 pm in the Library. All are welcome to attend. With the cold weather upon us, please make sure your children are wearing the appropriate winter clothing as it is important for them to get some fresh air outside during recesses and to be able to stay warm as well. Thank you for helping to make sure our students are prepared for their day. Have a great month of January everyone! Yours in Education, Dave Westaway Principal Welcome to January!!!

Supporting Students with Prevalent Medical / Health Conditions in Schools

To ensure children with potentially life-threatening medical conditions remain safe while attending school, TVDSB requests Parents/Guardians update the necessary medical information on the Parent Portal so that an Individual Plan of Care (IPOC) for the student can be reviewed by the school’s administration. Medical conditions considered potentially life-threatening may include:

Asthma Anaphylaxis Epilepsy Type 1 Diabetes Any other potentially life-threatening condition that could result in a medical incident* (discuss with your

school administrator)

Parents/Guardians can provide important information about their child's life-threatening or prevalent medical condition by logging into the TVDSB Parent Portal and clicking on the following tab: Student Medical Infor-mation. Once an Individual Plan of Care is submitted, the school administrator will then review the information. Parents/Guardians may be contacted for further information, if required. Parents/Guardians who cannot access the Parent Portal on the Internet should contact the school office. Please note that Parents/Guardians are expected to be active participants in supporting the management of the student’s prevalent medical condition(s) while the student is in school. It is the responsibility of Parents/Guardians to inform the school of such conditions to ensure the student's safety at school. *A medical incident is a circumstance that requires an immediate response and monitoring, since the inci-dent may progress to an emergency requiring contact with Emergency Medical Services – 911.

A huge congratulations to the senior boys and girls volleyball team in having the most successful season in Mustang history! Both teams took gold in the southwest regional championship, moving them onto the Thames Valley regional tournament. As per the season, they matched each other in success by winning silver overall. Mrs. Marr, Mrs. Morland, Mrs. Fish and Mrs. Marshall are proud of the accomplishments and wish them luck on future volleyball endeavour.

January Eco Club News

December was a fun month for the Eco Club. We planned and prepared a craft for grade 1 students. We then taught 30 students how to make an ornament with recycled materials. The Trashless Tuesday team tallied all the waste free

lunches for the month. Congratulations goes to Mrs. Cook’s class who earned the golden lightbulb for the most trashless lunches. A huge thank you to all families who continue to make a difference by packing lunches with all reusable containers. The Energy Team completed their monthly audit to make sure we are conserving energy by turning off lights and monitors when they are not in use. They noted many classrooms that use only one row of lights during lunch! The Recycling Team completed their monthly waste audit and noted that sorting of recycling is improving.

We are excited to introduce a new initiative at Mitchell Hepburn. Eighteen classes have signed up to join our composting program. We are extremely excited to be making this beneficial change to our waste program. Our compostable waste will now be diverted from the landfill site and will go to the city compost container. Our goal is to have ALL classrooms on board by next September!

Stay tuned for events coming in February: February 6-Winter Walk Day, February 7-Sweater and Toque Day and February 15th-18th Great Backyard Bird Count.

Mitchell Hepburn’s

needs your help!

The maker space in our library is a hub for technology, inquiry, and discovery. One of the most exciting elements of the Learning Commons is our makerspace. A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials.

“What do you do in a makerspace? The simple answer is you make things. Things that you are curious about. Things that spring from your imagination. Things that inspire you and things that you admire. The informal, playful atmosphere allows learning to unfold, rather than conform to a rigid agenda. Making, rather than consuming, is the focus. It is craft, engineering, technology and wonder-driven.” Thinkers and Tinkerers

In order to get Mitchell Hepburn’s Makerspace off the ground, we need your help! We are looking for donations of many common items you may have around the house to help channel creativity and exploration. Please find below a list of some of the items (new or used) we could use. If you are inspired by the concept and would consider investing in something from our ‘Wish List’ of items we hope to purchase, please contact Mrs. Fish at the school, or by email at [email protected]
