Hosted by Missouri State

Page 3: MVC VOLLEYBALL - Amazon S3...2018/10/22  · to her resume, along with 1 block assists and 3 digs. Emma Baalman (SIU) - Baalman led the Salukis with 10 kills in SIU’s two matches

Perfection in League PlayUNI remains unbeaten in MVC action after an-other perfect week of league play, sitting at 10-0. The last time UNI opened MVC play 10-0, they went on to finish 18-0 in league play in 2011, which was the program’s third straight 18-0 MVC campaign. The Panthers have only dropped seven sets in league play, posting a 30-7 mark in conference sets.

Redbirds Keeping PaceIllinois State is currently alone in second place in the conference standings with a 10-1 mark, finishing the week 3-0. Illinois State’s start to league play matches its best since 2014, when the Redbirds won the MVC outright with an 18-0 record. Illinois State is currently riding a six-match win streak and improved to 7-0 at Redbird Arena. The only season that the Redbirds went unbeaten at home in program history was also in 2014 (10-0).

Historic StretchBradley has possession of third-place in the MVC standings. Bradley’s four-set victory over defending MVC champion Missouri State gave the Braves their first sweep of the regular-sea-son series with the Bears since 1999. The Braves had not swept any Valley opponent during the regular season since 2013 and al-ready have two sweeps to their credit after a three-set victory over Southern Illinois Satur-day. Bradley swept the regular-season series from three MVC foes in 2013, which was the last time the Braves reached the Valley Tour-nament. Bradley’s current 12-match home win streak is the longest in school history, sur-passing the previous longest home win streak in program history of 11 set during a 32-10 season in 1985. .

Big TurnaroundBradley and Loyola are two of just four teams in the country to have an eight-win improve-ment from last year through matches of Oct. 21. Joining the Braves and Ramblers in the exclusive group are Stetson (9) and Florida International (8).

Valpo is one of seven teams nation-ally with 20 or more wins this season (Through Oct. 21), joining BYU, Pittsburgh, Texas State, SFA, Denver and Austin Peay.

Page 6: MVC VOLLEYBALL - Amazon S3...2018/10/22  · to her resume, along with 1 block assists and 3 digs. Emma Baalman (SIU) - Baalman led the Salukis with 10 kills in SIU’s two matches

BRADLEY (18-5, 8-3 MVC) DRAKE (16-8, 5-5 MVC)Big ImprovementBradley’s 18 wins this fall are already eight more than the Braves earned during the course of the entire 2017 season and mark the team’s best win total since capping the 2002 season with a 19-12 overall mark. In fact, Bradley is one of just four teams in the country and two in the Missouri Valley Conference (Loyola) to have an eight-win improvement from last year through matches of Oct. 21. Joining the Braves and Ramblers in the exclusive group are Stetson (9) and Florida International (8). The Braves have an eight-win improvement for the first time since the 2001 campaign when the Braves followed a 15-12 mark in 2000 with a 24-8 record. Bradley also boasts its best MVC win total (8) since 2005, which was also the last time the Braves won at least five more Valley games than the previous fall.

StreakingSaturday’s home sweep of Southern Illinois improved Bradley to a perfect 12-0 at Renaissance Coliseum. The Braves matched the school season record for home wins (12) with the victory, tying the mark previously set by the 2002 (12-5), 2001 (12-2) and 1985 (12-2) squads. In fact, the current 12-match home win streak is the longest in school history, surpassing the previous longest home win streak in program history of 11 set during a 32-10 season in 1985. The Braves are averag-ing 545 fans per home date in 2018, which would break the current school mark for highest average attendance set in 2010.

Sweeps WeekBradley’s four-set victory over defending MVC champion Missouri State gave the Braves their first sweep of the regular-season series with the Bears since 1999. The Braves had not swept any Valley opponent during the regular season since 2013 and already have two sweeps to their credit after a three-set victory over Southern Illinois Saturday. Bradley swept the regular-season series from three MVC foes in 2013, which was the last time the Braves reached the Valley Tournament.

Not Quite EnoughDrake pushed MVC leader UNI to five sets to mark the first time since 2010 that the Bulldogs have won a set in Cedar Falls … Drake is one of just five MVC teams to take UNI to more than three sets this season … the match was just the second five-set match Drake has played in this season.

Matches Career HighCathryn Cheek matched a career-high with 23 kills in the loss at UNI … she has recorded double-figure kills in six-straight matches and 20 or more kills in three of those matches … she also needs just one more dig to reach 200 for the season.

Returning HomeDrake returns home, where it is 6-3 this season, this week for a three-match homestand with a pair of Valley contests against Loyola and Valparaiso … Drake fell at Valpo and defeated Loyola earlier this season … Drake has won three-straight matches against Loyola.

History in the MakingAll-American libero Courtney Pence is on track to break the MVC career digs record during the 2018 regular sea-son. The senior currently has 2,587 digs on her resume, and will need just 101 to break UNI’s Ellie Blankenship’s mark in the Valley record book, which was set back in 2007-10. Pence collected 81 digs in three matches this week to average 8.10 digs per set, to improve her season digs per set average to 5.99. The Springfield, Illinois, native has ranked in the top-15 all season in NCAA Division I in the category.

Sweeping with SweepsFor the first time since the 2014 season, Illinois State swept its two-match series against Southern Illinois and Missouri State. All four matches, the Redbirds won in straight sets, making it the first time since the 2008 season that Illinois State has done so against the Salukis. It also marked the first time since 1997 that Il-linois State has swept its meetings with the Bears in the regular season with 3-0 victories in both matches.

Protecting the NestThe Redbirds finished a five-match home stand this weekend – the longest of its kind in at least a decade – with a pair of wins over Southern Illinois and Missouri State. Illinois State is currently riding a six-match win streak and improved to 7-0 at Redbird Arena to remain undefeated at home with two matches left to play at its home facility in 2018. The only season that the Redbirds went unbeaten at home in program history was in 2014 (10-0).

Home Sweet HomeFollowing its longest road trip of the season – a span of 20 days away from ISU Arena – Indiana State finally re-turns to the Wabash Valley this week as the Sycamores host Illinois State (Oct. 26) and Bradley (Oct. 27).

Fresh Start, But Not by ChoiceSometimes adversity thrusts you into a role you didn’t expect. That has never been truer than for Indiana State Volleyball lately as an injury has sidelined setter Makayla Knoblauch and witnessing Melina Tedrow tran-sition from defensive specialist to setter. While she did practice the position in pre-season, it wasn’t until Knoblauch’s injury nearly midway through the conference season that Tedrow took the reins of the Sycamore offense.

It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad WorldIndiana State freshman Madeline Williams has not been intimidated by the collegiate level of play in her true freshman season. She currently leads the Sycamores with a .281 hitting percentage and is second on the team with 52 total blocks entering this week’s action.

Milestone WatchSenior libero Alex Nunez has a chance to reach the 1,000-ca-reer-dig mark this season and enters this week’s outings with 843 career digs to her name. A year ago, Maddy Moser joined that exclusive club when she notched her 1,000th career dig in a win at Southern Illinois on October 30, 2017.

Getting Hot Senior Gabi Maciagowski, who notched her 1,000th career kill on October 5, is averaging 3.43 kills and 1.43 blocks per set, while hitting .500 (24-2-44), in her last two matches entering this week’s pivotal showdowns at Drake and UNI. The Toronto native has been unstoppable at Gentile Arena and is producing 3.45 kills and 1.45 blocks per set, with a hearty .472 hitting percentage (38-4-72), in her last three matches on the Ramblers’ home court.

Big TurnaroundOne year after winning just five matches (5-24), Loyola has engineered one of the biggest turnarounds in NCAA Division I play this season, nearly tripling that total with 13 victories with at least eight more matches remaining this season. Through matches of October 16, Loyola was one of only five teams in NCAA Division I play to have recorded at least a six-game improvement from a year ago, joining MVC rival Bradley, among others.

Balanced BlockingMissouri State currently has four players who have played in at least half of the team’s 83 sets that average 0.80 digs per set, with Makina Wratten (1.09), MacKenzie Irwin (0.97), Laynie Dake (0.85) and Aubrey Cheffey (0.81) making a formidable group at the net. The last time the Bears had at least three players average 0.75 or more blocks was in 2013, while MSU has not seen four players average that number since 2009.

Another Record for ButtersSenior Emily Butters has now mathematically secured Missouri State’s career digs per set record, adding yet another school mark to her resume. Butters has 2,310 digs in 478 career sets, a 4.83 average, and will finish ahead of Ashley Mason’s record of 4.05 regardless of how many sets MSU plays this season.

Flynn Climbing ListAmelia Flynn has 258 kills on the season with a 3.19 per set average, putting her in good company among MSU rookies. Flynn is on pace to become the sixth fresh-man to average three kills per set, and already ranks 12th in total kills. She has a realistic shot at second place on that list (Vanessa Wouters, 377 kills in 1994), while Lily Johnson holds the record with 495 kills in 2014.

Finding Ways to WinWith nearly 400 wins to her credit at Valpo, head coach Ca-rin Avery has had to come up with game plans to overcome a myriad of obstacles in her time at the helm of the Crusad-ers - most notably in 2016, when the team played the final 13 matches of the year with its libero as the primary setter and went 7-6. This time, it was framing a lineup around only one healthy middle, freshman Haley Hart. Instead of forcing another hitter to play out of position in the middle, Avery and her staff devised a plan to play a pair of right side hitters opposite each other in the rotation (with the libero playing back row for both) and have setter Brittany Anderson play opposite Hart and block middle in her three rotations up front. The result was two victories (3-1 over Evansville, and 3-0 over Indiana State) in which both sides of the ball performed well. Valpo hit .244 as a team with better than 13 kills per set in the pair of wins. Defensively, Valpo limited its opponents to .124 hitting and averaged 2.36 blocks/set - better than its season average entering the weekend.

Another 20 Win SeasonThe pair of wins last weekend gave Valpo 20 wins this year, the 15th time in Avery’s 17 seasons that Valpo has won 20 or more matches. This year marks the seventh time out of Avery’s 15 20-win teams that the program has reached 20 wins within the season’s first 25 matches.
