First, a bit about me…
My name is Joe and I’m a
recovering Kindle owner.
I wanted more…
So I bought an iPad
“But I still haven’t found
what I’m looking for.”
Today’s eBook Formula

A Model for the Future
Two flavors, both have value:
Cheaper• Quick-and-dirty (easy)• “Paper in e-format”• What we do today• Incremental $$
Higher-priced• Digital first (harder)• Built with platform in mind• More features• New $$ stream
Early TV vs. Early eBooks

How does the industry go from where it is today to where I’d like to see it?
We start with a list…
#1: Multi-format, DRM-free
#2: Readers for All Platforms
#3: Social Networks, Please?๏ Tweet from within the reader
๏ A more robust service enabling tweet links to actual excerpts; similar to Amazon’s “Look Inside” feature
๏ All built with affiliate programs in mind
#4: Mark-up & Content Sharing
#5: A Used eBook Ecosystem
#6: A Book vs. A Network
#7: “Just Long Enough”๏ Spine width only matters
in the physical world
๏ Don’t make me read 400pages when the sameconcept can be communicated in 25 pages
๏ It’s OK to charge me more for shorter works; I’ll pay for the time savings!
๏ But make the content extendible and interlinking (see item #6)
#8: “1-Click” eBook Sampling
#9: “1-Touch” Index Access
#10: QR Codes & Beyond
#11: Loyalty Programs
