In 1953 when I was only 3 years old, my family mo-ved from Toronto, Canada to Southern California in the area nearby Los Angeles. The 1950’s was a time of incredible growth in Southern California, and my playground as I grew up was surrounded by buil-ding sites where wood framed houses were being built for the thousands of people who were moving to California for the great weather and the jobs crea-ted by the many industries that were opening there.My family did not have a lot of money, and on the weekends, when I was about 8 years old, my friends and I would walk to the newly built outdoor shop-ping malls to window shop in the toy department of Sears Roebuck, Woolworths, the Joke and Magic Shop and Earl’s Toys. On our way to the mall we always passed the building sites where the new hou-ses were being framed.On the weekends, the carpenters, electricians and plumbers wouldn’t be working but their discar-ded soda pop bottles were everywhere to be found though out the work sites. This was manna from heaven for a group of 8 year olds. We would collect as many bottles as we could carry and take them to the liquor stores in order to exchange them for their deposit. Some bottles were 1 cent or 2 cents deposit, and the highest amount was a whopping 3 cents. If we were very lucky, we might earn 35 cents total for our bottles.One of our favorite stores to visit at the mall was Valley Plaza Hobbies. It was like walking into a magical palace for an 8 year old boy. They sold wooden and plastic model cars, planes, tanks and other military equipment to assemble and paint. There were displays of war dioramas and beautifully detailed and customized plastic kits assem-bled and painted by their most skilled customers.They also sold metal Britains toy sol-diers, and they had a large glass dis-play case with hundreds of Greenwood and Ball figures. I could stand in front of that display and look at those figures for hours. I was transfixed by the fine detail of the painting, and the $4.95 price on most of the figures made my head spin.In those days, a boxed Marx Playset which contained about 100 plastic soldiers, plus a tin lithographed fort,

DC, as I was looking through the toy sol-diers offered for sale on EBay, I saw sever-

al beautifully painted Greenwood & Ball Highland Officers listed for auction.

The text of the description said that these had cost $45.00 in 1960. This immediately set me back in time to

the 1950’s, and I wrote a note to the seller telling him my experi-ence as a young boy. Much to my surprise and delight, the seller, Woody Bennett Jr. infor-

med me that the figure that I was loo-king at on EBay, was probably one of

the ones that I had seen as a boy. His fa-ther, Woody Bennett Sr. had owned Val-

ley Plaza Hobbies, and now he, the son was selling all of his father’s old stock.

Woody and I sent messages back and forth through EBay reliving our childhoods in the area of North Hol-lywood around his father’s shop. I

I am not certain how they had eluded me until that point in time. I have since owned dozens, and I buy them whenever I have the chance.It is only since I have received the magnifi cent gift of this Gordon Highlander Offi cer that I have slow-ly come to the realization the seed of collecting was

Er schickte mir statt einer Antwort auf meine Frage den im Artikel abgebildeten Highland Of-fi zier als Geschenk.Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatt e ich bereits 30 Jahre gesammelt aber noch keine Greenwood and Ball-Figur in meinem Besitz .
