Key Projects Affecting Your RoadsIt’s a busy time on our roads, as Council continues to work on a number of key projects investing in the resilience of our infrastructure, the number one priority being our drinking water supply.

Projects of this size and scale do unfortunately require roadworks while we upgrade our infrastructure, sometimes in multiple locations, and Council greatly appreciates your patience.

The following projects have traffic management in place which may include road closures or detours during some or all of the work. Please take care when driving in the vicinity of these projects.

DRINKING WATER INVESTMENT STRATEGYEnsuring a safe and resilient water supply for our district is the number one priority for Council. An investment package totalling $47.5m of infrastructure and treatment work commenced last year, with two key projects currently impacting on our roads.

Te Mata Road Water ServicesMay 2017 – April 2018 Installation of a major new water main and sewer main.

This $10 million project is a key part of an overall drinking water infrastructure investment plan, and involves the installation of a major new water main over 4.8 kilometres. Initial works have commenced in St Georges Rd, Howard St and Crosses Rd.

HOUSING SUPPLYTo enable new housing developments to progress, Council invests in supplying infrastructure to ‘greenfields’ developments, such as the development currently underway in Lyndhurst Rd.

STORMWATER IMPROVEMENTSWith the existing infrastructure nearing the end of its lifespan Council is investing in a major upgrade of stormwater services on Railway Rd, which will not only renew but also improve the management of stormwater in this area.

TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTSCreating efficient transport linkages from field to plate are critical to ensuring a productive economy in the Hastings district.

BRIDGE STRENGTHENING As a result of changes to the allowable dimension and weight limits of vehicles on New Zealand roads, Council will be investing in strengthening 12 bridges across the district so they can cope with heavier vehicles.

Lyndhurst Road Residential Development InfrastructureNovember 2017 – May 2018

New stormwater, water and wastewater pipes as well as a shared pathway for cyclists, footpaths and roading. This work requires a road closure for the majority of the project, with some exceptions to allow access to Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park for major events.

Whakatu Arterial LinkJanuary 2017 - December 2018

The Whakatu Arterial Link will move large vehicles away from residential streets in and around the Whakatu residential area, making the streets safer for our people. This new 3.5 kilometre section of road includes construction of three large roundabouts and a 45m-long bridge. Works will commence on Farndon Rd intersection and the new roundabout at Pakowhai Rd from May.

Tois & Blacks Bridge, Taihape Road March 2018 – June 2018

Bridge strengthening work is underway on both of these bridges. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane while works take place. This project is expected be completed by the end of June, weather permitting.

OTHER PROJECTSIn addition to these major projects, Council continues to carry out smaller works to maintain our roads and infrastructure. For current road work locations please visit www.hastingsdc.govt.nz/road-works/ to see our interactive map.
