As I gather community news ideas for each issue of My Hometown Estrella, I often wonder what sto-ries might be of interest to you. What’s going on in our community and the surrounding area this month, this season? And, undoubtedly, like magic, the ideas come flowing, in the form of emails and phone calls from you – my neighbors. I’ve asked for your input and, in turn, I’ve received interesting and informa-tive pieces of your lives. I am truly enriched by the people that I have the opportunity to meet and the experiences you’ve shared with me. This month is no exception.

It is uplifting for me to share some of those sto-ries with you this month. Our cover story highlights two outstanding high school athletes, both senior students with some splendid accomplishments under their belts, including some incredible ammunition to take on their futures in a couple of short months.

Don’t forget that the Creative Arts Academy is gearing up for enrichment classes this summer - a first in our community. Relish beautiful photos taken by a local resident, Nicholas Pawley, who shares a few

secrets of the Sonoran Desert. It’s no secret how lush and green the Estrella Mountains look lately. Is it just me or do you get the feeling you’re somewhere in Hawaii as you drive up Estrella Parkway? Recent rains have fed the desert and it appears to be bloom-ing in delight.

The single most surprising piece of information in April’s issue is the astronomical number of home-less children in our state, specifically our surround-ing community, due to the U.S. economic situation. Thankfully, the Goodyear White Tanks Rotary Club is stepping in to help with a benefit dinner that your entire family can enjoy while you assist those young people in need.

Like the classic cuisine from the Deep South that gives satisfaction to the palate and defines a specific culture, soul food can also be information, coming from a supportive community. Thank you Estrella for the ideas and information that you pro-vide that feeds my soul. Those ideas become stories and news that I am excited to share with you in the pages of My Hometown Estrella!

secrets of the sonoran desert

If you have never lived in the Sonoran Desert after a rainy sea-son, prepare for a surprise -- yellow, pink, red, blue, white and purple flowers bloom on bushes, cacti and trees, in sandy washes and grass-lands. Unfortunately, this does not happen every year. Those of us that lived in the Northern States or Canada are used to predictable seasonal events, but the forces that drive the ecology of the Sonoran Desert are very different.

Ten years ago, when we first moved to Estrella, Corgett Wash was briefly flooded. Water two or more feet deep flowed across the full width of the wash for a few hours. About five years before that, El Nino out in the Pacific brought enough rain to Arizona to keep the Salt and Gila Rivers flowing for weeks. Rain in the Sonoran Desert follows its own pattern, which includes successive years of drought. Plants that can withstand these droughts are dependent on the thin layer of topsoil that is easily degraded by human activity. One of the reasons the desert does not recover from damage is the loss of this top layer of the soil horizon.

The durable creosote bush is the most common plant on the trails and open areas in and around Estrella. It has both a deep and a shal-low root system and a taste that does not appeal to animals. Creosote has survived, but grasses, flowers and many varieties of cactus have not. Without a plan to restore these areas the missing plants will not return.

To learn about the Sonoran Desert, read Arizona Highways, visit the Desert Botanical Gardens and Boyce Arboretum. Read books by Gary Nabhan such as Gathering the Desert and buy at least one field guide to the Southwestern States. A Field Guide to the Plants of Arizona by Anne Orth Epple has excellent illustrations of plants organized by color. The Audubon Field Guide to the Southwestern States covers plants, animals, birds, reptiles and insects. To understand the washes, rivers and riparian areas, visit the Hassayampa Preserve on the Road to Wickenburg and read At the Desert’s Green Edge by A.M. Rea. You will learn that Maricopa County was once at the conjunction of tree lined rivers, full of fish, grasslands and prosperous Native American ranches fed by canals.

Capital Consultants Management Corporation has lost a dedicated employee, while the community of Estrella has lost a friend, Jessie Madden. You may have seen Jessie driving a golf cart along the pathways of one of the community lakes or work-ing in the boat house at South Lake Park, doing a job that he loved - taking care of Estrella. Jessie was a team member of Estrella’s Maintenance Department for the past sixteen years. Ten of those years were with Capital Consultants Management Corporation. Jessie passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2010, leaving behind a daughter, Christina, son-in-law and a granddaughter. Anyone wishing to make a contribution to his memorial should visit the Community Center Office located adjacent to the Starpointe Residents Center.

It just wouldn’t be appropriate to let this year’s senior class at Estrella Foothills High School slip through their upcoming graduation ceremony without recognizing the prominent talents of two of its outstanding athletes - Corey Hawkins and Ryan Pace.

Two different athletes. Two different sports. Two different back-grounds. Yet, Ryan Pace and Corey Hawkins share one very common ath-letic denominator - excellent sportsmanship! Corey Hawkins will continue his basketball career next fall with the ASU Sun Devils and his education is “on the house” thanks to his full-ride scholarship. Ryan Pace dreams of becoming a fireman and his future will depend directly on this continued enthusiasm to go after what is important to him.

Without a doubt, Varsity basketball guard Corey Hawkins’ name will remain familiar in our community, as it grows more and more common at Arizona State University and beyond. Basketball is definitely in this young athlete’s future and all of Arizona can watch, as he continues to break the point records of pre-dominant athletes before him. Who could forget Corey’s historic sea-sonal point breaking record, achieved in his home gymnasium, as his coaches, friends and family members looked on? It was a spectacu-lar, defining moment on that February evening when Hawkins toppled Mike Bibby’s 1996 Phoenix Shadow Mountain High School record. Among the spectators was his father Hersey Hawkins, Estrella Foothill’s former assistant coach, better known as former NBA All-star, and currently known as Player Developmental Director for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Corey toppled Mike Bibby’s 1996 records of 1,132 points in a season. Bibby is currently a member of NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Stay tuned NBA as Estrella Foothills High School’s Varsity Coach, Ty Amundsen, sends over his finest!

Equally hard-working, minus the accomplished close-knit circle of fame, is Estrella Foothills High School Varsity Wrestler, Ryan Pace. Ryan began his wrestling career just three years ago as a means of escaping his less than perfect home life, claiming that the sport has driven him to suc-ceed and offered an outlet to the challenges he faces in his personal life. &

BLINDS “I wanted to do this to show my younger brother that there is a way out of all of that mess,” stated the senior exceptional athlete. This year, Ryan wrestled his way into the 3A West State-Runner-Up position in the 189 lb. weight class, inching his way into the state tournament by beating his competitor in a fourth overtime match. Ryan had lost to that opponent earlier in the season. “The challenges have always been there, both in and out of wrestling for Ryan,” stated his coach Gath Benson. One of those challenges was the fact that he finished the majority of this season with a significant injury to his right hand.

Ryan’s coach describes the senior wrestling Team Captain as a quiet leader with his biggest strength being his work ethic. “The amount of time that Ryan put in, both in the weight room and wrestling room, was evident. He had only wrestled for three years and placed at state. He saw what it took to get to the next level and got there,” said Coach Benson. In the state finals, Ryan had to once again meet someone whom he had lost to earlier in the season. Ryan lost the State Championship title 6-5 against his Blue Ridge competitor. “He made the finals match very close, much closer than his opponent wanted. I suspect if he had another ten seconds, he would have won that match,” stated Coach Benson.

“It was such a privilege to coach Ryan. His work ethic was unsurpassed by anyone in the room. He is such a respectful young man who was will-ing to do whatever it took to help the team. He had to overcome a number of obstacles to get where he did, both in and out of wrestling. It is hard to replace someone who was such an obvious leader,” said Coach Benson.

Ryan Pace won a total of three overtime matches throughout the season. He is the third wrestler from Estrella Foothills High School to ever make the finals. Without a doubt, the wrestling season, as well as the outside world, are challenges that Ryan faces head on. His strength and determi-nation allow him to prevail in both areas. Ryan added that he is inspired by one of his biggest fans, Mr. Paul Budge, who worked out and wrestled with him at practices daily. Paul Budge taught Ryan in junior high school at Westar and remembers him as a quiet, hard-working youngster. More recently, Paul Budge recalls becoming excited when he learned about the possibility of helping out with the Varsity wrestling team. “This kid was squatting 500 and benching 350. Ryan is one of the most focused kids that I have ever coached. He had a state-championship goal on his mind throughout the season. Even though he didn’t quite reach his goal, runner-up is nothing to be ashamed of. I am very proud of him. I believe if he had 30 more seconds, he would have reached his goal,” said Mr. Budge. Those words of determination and encouragement are messages that Ryan will carry with him after high school in his continued quest to succeed.

Come one, come all to Estrella Mountain Preschool’s Annual Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction fundraiser on Saturday, April 24 from 7 am to 11 am. They will be serving up pancakes, sausage and beverages and taking bids on some wonderful silent auction items from 7 to 10:30 am in the Estrella Mountain Church lower courtyard. Estrella Mountain Preschool is a non-profit organization and the pro-ceeds from this fundraiser will go towards school/playground enhancements and scholarships for low-income families. Save the date for Estrella Mountain Church’s Barbeque scheduled at South Lake Park on Saturday, May 8, 2010. This family-style event takes place from noon to 4 pm. Don’t forget to enter the three-legged race and pie-eating contest. The menu includes quarter piece of chicken for $8, angus burgers for $6, and beef hot dogs for $6. You don’t have to look far to find a homeless student

or family anymore. in fact, a homeless person is as close as

someone who was your neighbor, your friend, or a classmate.

last year, the state of arizona alone had 25,000 homeless stu-

dents in grades k-12 and that number is increasing. “it’s people

who thought they would never be in this situation,” stated

aqua fria school District’s liaison for the homeless, robin

Jacobs. it’s a situation many students in local and surrounding

communities are finding themselves in, due to job losses and

the home mortgage crisis. “it’s no longer an economic thing;

it’s a u.s. thing,” said Jacobs. it’s thanks to community involve-

ment and organizations like the goodyear white tanks rotary

club, public school liaisons and the mckinney-vento act’s

education for homeless children and Youth (ehcY) that these

increasing numbers of children and youth will receive imme-

diate assistance with housing, enrollment in public school

systems, and school supplies with school fees waived. these

students will be able to take full advantage of an education and

that includes extra-curricular activities. Your community sup-

port, through fundraising activities such as the dinner hosted

by the goodyear white tanks rotary club makes this possible.

assists youth in our surrounding communities that have not

The Wolves claimed their third consecutive State Championship title on Saturday, February 27 against Round Valley High School at the Jobing.com Arena. The final score was 77-57. Leading scorers, Devon Hawkins and Troy Coleman, each had 24 points. Congratulations Wolves on earning a State Championship title and trophy three years in a row!

Once again, estrella residents won’t have to go far from home to receive high-quality, personalized swim instruction. Beginning in april and running through september, aqua-tots swim school will offer lessons at the estrella lap pool.

a variety of class times and levels, ranging from beginner to stroke development, will be offered. each 30-minute class will have a max-imum of four students, and will run for one month. students may attend twice a week for $99 per month, or once a week on saturdays for $59 per month. there is also an annual registration fee. make-up lessons are provided for no additional cost. while most classes are geared for children from six-months to 14 years old, aqua-tots also offers private adult lessons.

looking for something more than just swim lessons, consider swim club! this sea-sonal program is being offered and facilitated by aqua-tots swim school and is available exclusively to estrella residents. swim club will meet twice a week for 60 minutes, may through July. the cost is $223.50 plus swim meet fees. participants must be able to swim 25 yards on their own. the focus of the club will be on stroke correction and self-improve-ment while building endurance and having fun.

Upcoming ECA Board of Directors Elections

at this year’s annual meeting, the estrella community association (eca) will be electing two new resident Board members to sit on the Board of Directors. the term of the incum-bents will end this fall. with elections pend-ing, a nominating committee will be formed to solicit and screen possible candidates. the responsibility of the nominating committee is to solicit nominations to serve on the Board.

residents interested in serving on the nominating committee are required to obtain and submit their application to the community service Office by friday, april 16. the nominating committee will be appointed at the Board of Directors meeting on april 27. the committee will be tasked with providing a slate of candidates to the Board at an upcom-ing meeting.

Rental Property Reminderas a reminder to all homeowners who rent out their home

and to the tenants who reside in the community, the community services Office needs the following information from the owner, tenant, or management company: a copy of the lease agreement, a property use transfer record and contact information for both the owner and tenant (names, mailing address, phone number, email address). as properties change from owners to tenants, there will be a property record transfer fee of $100.

assessments not current will result in privileges revoked to the starpointe residents club and any community activities that take place. Once the property account is paid in full, all privileges will be reinstated.

homeowners are encouraged to provide potential tenants a copy of the community cc&rs and the community handbook prior to signing the lease. copies of these documents can be found online at our community website, www.lifeinestrella.com, in the Document library.

Trash Talk!earth Day is being celebrated on

april 22. this is a time to clean up the planet. however, the concept of earth Day should be practiced every day. trash is being tossed everywhere in the community. it is seen along roadways, in parks, at favorite fishing spots, and in all places in between. litter can destroy the look and purity of estrella. it’s sad to hike the trails and enjoy the beauti-ful surroundings only to have it fouled by discarded water bottles, wrappers, crinkled soda cans, etc.

Be on the lookout for trash bins and containers, and be willing to hold on to your trash for a little while. recycling your water bottles and cans is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. thank you for taking pride in your community.

whO are the

people in your neighborhood

Matthew, Kristin, Christian, Gwyneth and Noah Caraway share their home in Estrella with three fish - Bella, Othello and Pacific. Before mov-ing to this area, the California natives were living in Redondo Beach, vow-ing that they would never move to the oppressively hot desert of Arizona. “Never say never,” says Kristin. Matt had been commuting three to four days a week from Los Angeles to the Phoenix area for work and, as you might guess, that got old very quickly. On one particular business trip, Matthew discovered Estrella and decided to bring Kristin to Arizona to take a look. After exploring the area and witnessing several Arizona sunsets, Kristin recalls that it was a sort of “love at first sight,” making it a desired move from their home in the South Bay area of Los Angeles.

Now, three years later, the Caraways have settled in the Fairways and have never looked back. “Although we miss the Southern California beaches, we LOVE it here!” says Kristin, a preschool at Estrella Mountain Church. In addition, she is the Publications Director at the Creative Arts Academy and the Executive Editor of Director’s Cut, a magazine publication. One of Kristin’s most recent accomplishments was completing her first half mara-thon. Matt is an information technology consultant with VICO Systems and a Web Design Director for the Creative Arts Academy. He enjoys golfing with his friends, playing baseball with the kids, and being a leader in the Estrella Mountain Church AWANA program.

The Caraway children are equally as active as their parents. Christian (10) has a passion for baseball and basketball. He studies piano and enjoys learning about history, military history, in particular. Gwyneth (9) loves music, dancing, hip-hop and ballet. Noah (7) is described by his family as the ‘socialite’. He enjoys basketball, piano and being outdoors with his friends.

The Caraways are surrounded by wonderful neighbors who have become their best friends and extended family.’ Some keep them entertained, others are traveling partners, and yet another family introduced them to Estrella Mountain Church, which has become a second home to the Caraway fam-ily. Both Matthew and Kristin are very involved in many aspects of the church, including The Creative Arts Academy. Kristin is especially excited to work with a group, whom she lovingly refers to as the “dream team,” to

bring creative arts to Estrella this summer through a wide variety of pro-grams. “These programs will offer dynamic instruction in the visual, audio, performing and literary arts.” She is excited to offer classes to all age groups and invites all community members to visit www.caa-az.org and register for a favorite class.

Without a doubt, this family will be extremely busy this spring and sum-mer surrounding themselves with all of the people and activities that they love the most. The Caraways admit that they do suffer occasionally from “ocean air withdrawals,” prompting the need to make pilgrimages to the beach cities on occasion, but LOVE it here and have never looked back.

Sunday BrunchSpring is here and my thoughts turn to Sunday Brunch. Brunch is a meal

usually eaten between 11am and 3pm and is a combination of breakfast and lunch foods. These days, it’s just as popular for home entertaining as it is in restaurants and resorts. The foods you’ll see at most brunches are eggs, fruit, cured meats, waffles or crepes, and various pastries, as well as beverages that can be either spirited or non-alcoholic.

My favorite brunch recipes are those that I can make the night before and just toss into the oven to finish while my guests are arriving. These recipes are among my most requested. Give them a try with your friends and family.

1 Cup Shredded Pepper-Jack Cheese

2 Cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese

1-10oz pkg Frozen Chopped Broccoli, thawed and drained

2 Medium Tomatoes, coarsely chopped (about 1-1/2 cups)

1 Cup Milk

¼ Cup Flour

3 Eggs

1 (1 pound) loaf French bread, cut diagonally in 1 inch slices

8 eggs

2 cups milk

1 1/2 cups half-and-half cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon ground cinna-mon

3/4 cup butter

1 1/3 cups brown sugar

3 tablespoons light corn syrup

breakfast strata1 pound sliced bacon, cut into ½ inch pieces

2 cups chopped cooked ham

1 small onion, chopped

8-10 slices white bread, cubed

2 cups cubed cooked pota-toes

3 cups shredded cheddar cheese (12oz)

8 eggs

3 cups milk

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dry mustard

Salt & pepper

in a skillet, cook bacon until done. remove bacon from skillet, leaving drippings in the pan. add ham and onion to skillet. cook and stir until onion is tender. Drain grease from ham and onion.

2 20oz Cans of Pineapple chunks in it’s own juice

1 Large box of sugar free instant vanilla pudding

Couple of bananas

Strawberries

Apples

Grapes

Blueberries½ tsp Salt

heat oven to 350. layer pepper cheese, broccoli, tomatoes, and cheddar in an ungreased 9” square pan.

Beat milk, salt, flour, and eggs until smooth; pour over cheese.

Bake uncovered, 40-45 min-utes or until egg mixture is set.

let stand 10 minutes before cutting.

Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish. arrange the slices of bread in the bottom. in a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk, cream, vanilla and cinnamon. pour over bread slices, cover, and refrigerate overnight.

the next morning, preheat oven to 350 degrees f (175 degrees c). in a small sauce-pan, combine butter, brown sugar and corn syrup; heat until bubbling. pour over bread and egg mixture.

Bake in preheated oven, uncovered, for 40 minutes.

Any combination of those fruits.

Drain the pineapple juice into a separate bowl, and set aside.

cut fruit and put into a bowl.

mix the pudding into the reserved pineapple juice.

pour the mixture on top of the fruit and stir in........then enjoy!!

in a bowl, combine bacon, ham, and onion.

in a greased 13x9x2 bak-ing dish, layer half the bread cubes, potatoes, and cheese, in that order. top with all of the bacon mix-ture.

repeat another layer of bread, potatoes, and cheese.

in a bowl, beat the eggs. add milk, worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper to the eggs. pour over all in the baking dish.

cover and refrigerate over-night.

remove from the refrigera-tor 30 minutes before bak-ing.

Bake, uncovered, at 325 degrees for 65-70 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

pour over chocolate and stir/whisk until melted and smooth.
