Fall Career Fair in Bangor features morethan 60 employersBANGOR — The BangorCareerCenter is co-sponsoring aCareer Fair on October 11, 2012,from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. The fair will beheld at the Maine Army NationalGuard Flight Facility, 28 HayesStreet in Bangor. In a world where technology iseverywhere, there is nothing thatwill ever replace the personalcontact that the handshakeprovides. The handshake is thesingle most important non-verbalform of communication in which weare judged by others.
A positive handshake offers abridge to future relationships andopportunities. It can revealinformation about you, including:what kind of person you are, yourpersonality and your sincerity. Toappreciate the importance of thehandshake, it may be helpful tolearn about it.
Some HistoryThe ritual of the handshake beganduring the Middle Ages, not out offriendship, but out of fear anddistrust. Imagine living in a worldwhere there was always the threatof danger. In order to protectoneself from wild animals, banditsor thieves, it was common to carryand conceal a weapon forprotection. The right hand was usedto hold onto a weapon because theleft hand was considered evil.
When two strangers, both carryingweapons met, there were limited
options. The choices were to: fighteach other, let each other continueon their way or possibly becomefriends. Friendship began whenboth individuals either put theirweapons on the ground or openedtheir right forearms to prove thatnothing was concealed that wouldharm the other. That act ofconnection is how the handshakebegan.
The NormToday we shake hands for a varietyof reasons throughout the day, atbusiness meetings, and interviewsand during social and specialoccasions.
Until the 1930’s, handshaking wasused exclusively by men. It was thetradition for a lady to curtsey with aslightly bent knee, lowering thebody, the dress held out to the sides.When women joined the workforce,handshaking became the norm foreveryone.
Revealing StylesThere are a variety of handshakestyles, all of which providenumerous combinations andvariations. If you take the time tolearn how to shake hands, you will
be able to gain more insight and bebetter able to decipher themessages behind the handshakesyou receive.
For example, a bone-crushing-twisting combination often reveals adominant and aggressivepersonality. A handshake that feelslike a dead fish sometimes reflects atotal disinterest and lack ofpersonality. A sloppy handshakemay be reflective of someone who isunsure about how to shake handsand may have limited social skillsand experience.
How to Shake HandsIn case you needed some brushingup, here is a basic rundown of howto shake hands:
• Extend your hand with yourthumb pointed upward and yourfour other fingers straight ahead
• Grasp hands so that the web ofyour hand matches the same pointon the other person
• Do not offer (or take) just thefingers
• Hold firmly, but without acrushing grip
• Pump two or three times whilemaking eye contact
• The handshake should last two orthree seconds

You only have one chance to makea good first impression. Yourhandshake is your personalsignature and a reflection aboutwho you are. No one has ahandshake that feels exactly like theone you offer.

(ARA) – Many recent collegegraduates continue to face achallenging job market, but do theyknow how to effectively locate andacquire a job?
With 53.6 percent of bachelor'sdegree-holders under the age of 25underemployed or unemployed, thenation's young people areunfortunately less prepared thanthey think.
According to a new nationalsurvey, 48 percent of college careercenter directors felt students werenot well prepared for the careerlandscape - noting a lack ofmotivation and understanding aboutthe job search process as majorbarriers to successfully landing ajob. The survey, EffectivelyCounseling Graduating Students,was conducted by the NationalAssociation of Colleges andEmployers (NACE) on behalf of theCareer Advisory Board, establishedby DeVry University.
Career center directors cited that,overall, students have a poorunderstanding of the effort requiredto search for and secureemployment. More than 77 percentof college career center directorsfelt the greatest obstacle incounseling students to enter the jobmarket was getting them tounderstand the effort required tosuccessfully search and compete fora job.
These factors contribute to studentsnot utilizing their school's careercenter or skipping this resourcealtogether, which could prolong thejob search process. Fifty-six percentof career center directors feltstudents did not have resumes readyto show employers.
“The survey reveals recent
graduates may be prepared toperform on the job, but notprepared to find the job,” saysAlexandra Levit, business andworkplace consultant and CareerAdvisory Board member. “Studentsneed to seek out the career centerearly in their college experience totake advantage of resume review,coaching and career counseling toprepare for the job hunt.”
Eighty percent of the career centerdirectors surveyed believeindividual student career coachingis the most effective resourceavailable for students.
Additionally, the Career AdvisoryBoard recommends the followingadvice for students and recentgraduates to become marketplaceready:
1. Tailor your resume – Do yourhomework. Ensure your resume fitsthe target position's job description,including keywords beforesubmitting. Craft your resume in away that will interest an employerimmediately.
2. Build on your skill set –Continually improve your skills. Inorder to succeed in the workplace,you need to be able to master newinformation, write coherently andcontribute meaningfully in a groupsetting.
3. Practice makes perfect – One-on-one coaching sessions or mockinterviews with career serviceprofessionals are the best forms ofrehearsal and a good way to learnthe dos and don'ts.

If you're looking forwork, it might seem difficult to knowhow to stand out from the crowd.For anyone feeling stalled in theirjob search, a few simple steps couldput the wind back in their sails.
"When I talk with students who arediscouraged, the first question I askis, 'What are you doing?' Ninetimes out of 10 they're on thecomputer," says Chasity Trzop,director of Career Services atBrown Mackie College - Louisville.“The computer is a passive jobsearch. You are one of a thousandonline, with about a 10 percentchance of getting an interview ifyou have done nothing face-to-facewith the company. You must get outand interact with people," Trzopsays.
Treat a job search like a job.
Trzop reminds graduates thatsearching for a job is a job, andshould be treated as such. A goodrule of thumb is to do 10 thingseach day in support of your jobsearch. "Five of those things can bedone online, like finding andapplying for jobs, and writing e-mails to strengthen your careernetwork. The other five thingsshould be personal contact withpeople who may be able to help.Get up and meet with people faceto face," says Trzop.
Join professional associations.
Students at Brown Mackie College -Louisville learn early during theiracademic program the importanceof building a professional network.They are encouraged to join studentclubs and professional associationsin support of their major. Theaffiliations are helpful in securingan externship, and indispensablewhen searching for employment.Attending association functions putsyou in front of people who may behiring. "No one knows howwonderful you are if you're hidingbehind your computer," Trzop says."Go to events, and carry yourresume with you."
Volunteer to apprentice withoutpay.
Volunteering to work without paycan go a long way toward findinga job. "Offer your service tosomeone in the field you want toenter. Ask if you can shadow him orher for a few days," Trzoprecommends. "Who wouldn't wantfree labor? It's no skin off your noseif they say no." Trzop has seenmany students gain on-the-jobexperience this way. Severalproved to be so useful that thecompany created jobs for them.
Volunteer for community service.
Make productive use of your time."Volunteer for any type ofcommunity service that interestsyou," Trzop says. It providesnumerous benefits. It gets you out ofthe house and introduces you tonew people. "You never know whenyou'll meet someone who may behiring. The experience also looksgreat on a resume, and can fillgaps in employment," she says.
Use the phone to your bestadvantage.
Trzop tells graduates to keep intouch. After meeting people in theindustry, call them to solidify therelationship. Ask for information onwhich companies may be hiring."Make excuses for calling," shesays. "If your profession requirescertification, call your contactswhen it comes through."
Social websites aren't just forsmall talk.
"More and more people areturning to social networks likeFacebook and LinkedIn in theirsearch for employment," saysTrzop. "The websites make it easyto connect with others who shareyour interests." Brown MackieCollege - Louisville has even begunto use LinkedIn to find interncandidates and promote internshipfairs.
Now you are armed with specificknowledge on how to conduct yourjob search from a career serviceprofessional. "Keep a positiveattitude and do the legwork that willput you out in front of people,"Trzop says. "I tell our school'sgraduates, 'School is boot camp.Now go out and be a soldier.'"
