It was near the beginning of the school year,just before Parents’ Night.

Devon was new at the school, but he’d gotten off to a great start.He’d made a lot of friends.

He liked his teacher.He liked the principal.

He was on the soccer team.He was in the chorus.

Devon was different from some of his classmates.He was a little taller.

“Stand up straight!” his mother always warned him,“or you will grow up to look like a candy cane.”

Devon loved peppermint, so he did not think that would be so bad.

Devon was “maturing” early,or that’s what his pediatrician, Dr. Diaper, said.

“Kids develop at different rates,”Dr. Diaper told his parents.

“It’s OK. They all catch up to each other sooner or later.”

Most of the kids ate the school lunch,but Devon brought his own lunch to school

—steak tartar* usually.He LOVED steak tartar.

His mom did not mind making it for him since it was so easy.

*Steak tartar is raw steak.
