    The farm.

    Mr. Jackson lives in the country. He is a farmer. He lives and works on his farm.It is a coffee farm. It is big and beautiful, with thousands of coffee trees. Mr.Jackson is a rich farmer. On Mr. Jacksons farm you see many plants: trees,

    vegetables and flowers. Some of the fruit trees are: banana trees, pears,pineapples and strawberries. Fruit is good to eat. I like fruit for dessert. I likefruit salad too. Mr. Jackson has vegetable garden. He grows lettuce, cabbage,tomatoes, potatoes, carrots and peas. Lettuce, cabbage and peas are green.Carrots are orange-red. Tomatoes are red. Mr. Jackson plants a lot of vegetablesin the spring.

    They grow in the summer. We use vegetable to make salad. I like tomatosalad. Potato salad is very good too. Mr. Jackson likes horses. He has some big black horses and some white horses too. He grows corn and grass for his beautiful horses. Mrs. Jackson has a beautiful flower garden where the flowersgrow in flower beds. In the flower garden you see roses, carnations, dahlias and

    violets. When I visit Mrs. Jacksons flower garden, I dont touch the flowers.Now, lets learn this verse. You teacher will explain the new words.

    Roses are red, Violets are blue,

    Sugar is sweet And so are you.

    WILD ANIMALS, DOMESTIC ANIMALS AND BIRDS.

    Lets go to the zoo today. On the farm there are domestic animals. In thezoo there are wild animals, such as the monkey, the lion, the tiger, the elephant,the bear and the snake. Wild animals live in the woods. We see them in also inthe movies. The lion comes from Africa, The elephant comes from India and the bear from America. There are few bear in the zoo: only two. One is white and theother is brown. The zoo has a few monkeys from Brazil and other places. Arethere any domestic animal in the zoo? No, there arent.

    There are large and small snakes in Brazil, but there are not any bears,except in the zoo. The elephant is the largest and strongest animal. The monkey is very funny.

    Some animals we see every day, such as the dog, the cat, the horse, the cow,the donkey, the pig, the sheep and the goat. They live near us. The donkey is very stupid, but the horse is intelligent. Cows are very usefull animal. They givemilk. Some cows give much milk; others give little milk. Boys and girls like tohave a pet ( a dog, a cat or perhaps, a monkey). Do you have a pet? Yes, I do.

    There are large and small domestic animals. The horse, the donkey and thecow are large, but the dog and the cat are small.

    About birds. We see small and large birds of beutiful colors. There are a lotof birds in Brazil. They have diferent names. Some of the birds are: the cock, thehen, the chick, the parrot, the pigeon and the turkey.

    The butterfly is very beautiful. There are many kinds of butterflies in Brazil.

    THE TAYLORS HOUSE

    Come and see the Taylors house. It is smaller than mine, but I like it. It hasfour rooms: a living room, a kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom. The linvingroom and kitchen are downstairs and the bedroom and bathroom are upstairs.The Taylors house also has a stairs and a hall. In the evening, the Taylors sitind the living room and talk and watch television or listen to the radio. Mrs.Taylor likes to sew in the evening. There is a lamp on a small table in the livingroom. There is a bookcase too. There is a curtain on the window in the kitchen.The Taylors eat in the large kitchen. Mrs. Taylor makes lunch and dinner in thekitchen.

    Let us go upstairs. Let us go up to the bedroom. In the bedroom, there is a bed, a wardrobe, a closet and a dresser. In the bathroom there are towels and

    soap. Now let us go down.Does the Taylors house have a roof? Of corse it does. Every house has a

    roof.Some people live in apartaments. They are smalles than houses. Small

    apartament have a kitchenette instead of a kitchen. My friend Mr. Shaw lives inan apartament. He has many relatives. He has a father and a mother; they are rhis parents. He also has a grandfather and a grandmother; they are hisgrandparents. Mr. Shaw has a good wife. He has no grandchildren ( grandsonsor grand-daughters), but he has two clildren: a son and a daugther. Charlie ishis child and Louise is his child too. Louise is very little: she is a baby. Mr. Shaw has other relatives: uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

    Mr. Shaws grandmother is na old woman. She wears glasses.

    THE CITY

    I live in Springfield. I came to Springfiel in 1960 on May 2, 1960. It is agood city. It is a large and beautiful. I live on State Street. I live at 45 StateStreet. It is a quiet street with nice houses and tall trees. My friend Terry lives with his family in an apartament on a very noisy street.

    I go to school by bus. The bus stops near my house. It goes by the school. Iget on the bus at State Street and get off at Jefferson Street. I like to ride on the bus. The students in my class go to school by bus or by streetcar. They haveclasses every day. Except on Sunday. The buses of my city are confortables.Buses and cars are necessary in a large city.

    My city has many buildings. Some are large. Others are small. Some of the buildingsare: the library, the theater, the post office, the hospital, the factory,the market, the church, the store, the restaurant, the school.

    I go to the library to read. I go to the store to buy things. I buy milk, coffee,etc, at the store. The coffee from Brazil is the best. I go to the hospital when I am very sick. I go to the city park on Sundays. I go to the park at 4 or 5 oclock inthe afternoon.

    Life in a big city is very busy. It dont stop. In the morning you see a lot of people goig to work and students going to school. Some students walk to school:

    others go on the school bus. During the day people are going places or workingthe factories, stores or offices. The people of my city like to work. In the eveningthey go home to rest and sleep.

    There are many large cities in the United States. Brazil has large cities too. Are you for or against big cities? Do you live in a big city or in a small city?

    WORK

    Johns father works in an office: he is a clerk. His brother works in a factory;he is a factory worker. He works during the day. He works 8 hours every day.The manager is a principal worker in a factory or in an office. Mr. Jackson workson a farm; he is a farmer. The baker makes bread. The butcher sells meat. Thegrocer sells things to eat. The tailor makes mens clothes: the dressmaker makes womens clothes. The maid works in the house.

    Na architect is a man who builds houses and na engineer builds roads,machines, ect. An engineer can make a lot of money. The doctor comes to ourhouse when we are sick. The businessman does business; he buy and sellsthings. The secretary works in an office; she types letters. The nurse works in ahospital; she helps the doctor.

    John is going to be a dentist when he grows up. Margaret is going to work inan office; she will be a secretary. Doris is going to work in a hospital; she will bea nurse. Frank wants to be an architect.

    What do you want to be when you grow up?

    INDUSTRY

    Lets go and see the General Motors. Lets see it carefully. It is large withmany machines. The men are working hard. They are factory workers. They aremaking cars. This is a car factory.

    Factories make many things. They make cloth, glass, paper, machines, etc.The products made in Brazil are sold to others countries too. The United Statesis a very industrial country.It makes good cars and airplanes. England makesfine cloth and machines.

    Products are made from raw materials. Brazil ia s rich country and it hasmany important raw materials, such as: iron, rubber, wood, cotton and leather.Iron is a metal. Brazil also makes steel. Peru has silver. The United States haspetroleum (or oil). Canada makes paper. Japan makes very fine silk. Woolcomes from Australia and Argentina.

    Cloth is used to make clothes. Paper is used to make books, notebooks andnewspapers. Machine are made of iron and steel. Tables, chairs and desks aremade of wood. Gasoline is made from petroleum. The abbreviation gas is alsoused istead of gasoline.

    Your shoes are made of leather. Your watch are made of gold or steel.Silver is rather dear, but gold is too dear. Silk is quite expensive; it is moreexpensive than wool. But woll is good enough for me. Cotton is less expensivethan than wool. It is the least expensive of the three.

    they sitting or standing? They are sitting. Are they sitting in a garden? No, they are sitting in a room. What are they doing? One is writing. The other is reading.Is he reading a book? No, is not. What is he reading? He is reading a paper. Can you see two plates on the table? No, I cannot. I can see two bottles and twoglasses. Two bottles of beer? No, two bottles of milk.     LETS GO SHOPPING

    Lets go shopping today. Lets go to the store buy clothes. We may pay cash,that is, to pay when we buy something. When we do not pay cash, we receive a bill. The price of the clothes is on the bill. When we do not pay cash, we buy oncredit. The store has cheap and expensive clothes. We can shop until fiveoclock. After that we can as far as the coffee shop and have an ice cream.

    I like to go shopping in a big city with a lot of money in my pocket, of course. There are large and beautiful stores. You can always see many peopleshopping every day.

    Women love to go shopping. They like to spend money and buy new things.A woman is always buying something. They spend their money quickly.

    They sometimes like to go window-shopping with their friends. To window-shop is to look at the stores windows without buying.

    I usually go to the departament store to buy clothes, presents, etc. A departament store has almost everything. The flower shop has beautiful roses. Isometimes go to the flower shop to look at all the pretty flowers. There are many stores in a big city. The dime store is very popular. We can buy books in the bookstore. Bread comes from the bakery. Meat comes from the butcher shop.Rice, beans, etc. come from grocery store. A supermarket is a large grocery store.

    MONEY

    We buy things with money. We cannot buy things without money. We can buy many things with money, such as houses, cars, books, etc. A millionaire is aman who has a lot of money, he is a rich man. A poor man has very little or nomoney at all. We must work to get money. You know, money does not grow ontrees.

    We put our money in the bank. The bank keeps our money for us. When wego shopping and buy anything, we need money. When we go to the market and buy several things, we need money. Some of the things are cheap and others areexpensive, but they all cost money. We spend our money on them.

    Everything costs money. You have to pay for the milk that you drink, dont

    you? Your father pay for the light and water in your house, doesnt he? we haveto pay to see a movie, dont we? You have to pay to ride on the bus, dont you?Isnt money important? Yes, it is, we cant live without money, can we? Dont you think is very important?

    The Brazilians use real and centavos. There are 100 centavos in a real. Theamericans use dollars and cents. There are exactly 100 cents in a dollar. Wehave coins and bills. A coins is made of metal and a bill is made of paper.
