My mommasays that I’m confusedabout 99% of the time.

Is that a lot?

Multiplying and Dividing IntegersCan we

make this quick? I can’t be late for my fried Twinkie eating

contest.

I will try and make this as quick as

possible!

Awesome!Sparky hungry…

very hungry!

Multiplying Integers

and

+ × + = +- × - = +

Whenever you multiply two “like” signs, the product is always

positive.

Whenever you multiplytwo “opposite” signs, the product is always

negative.

+ × - = -- × + = -

Dividing Integers

+ ÷ + = +- ÷ - = +

Whenever you divide two “like” signs, the quotient is always

positive.and

Whenever you dividetwo “opposite” signs,

the quotient is always negative.

+ ÷ - = -- ÷ + = -

Let’s Put Them Side-by-Side

Multiplying Dividing

The rules for multiplying and dividing integers are exactly

the same!

5 × 5 = 25–3 × (–4) = 127 × (–3) = –21 –6 × 1 = –6 and

9 ÷ 3 = 3–10 ÷ (–2) = 516 ÷ (–2) = –8 –9 ÷ 9 = –1 and

Page 6: My momma says that I’m confused a bout 99% of the time. Is that a lot?

Multiplying and Dividing IntegersDoes this

mean I won’t haveto remember two

sets of rules?

That’s exactly what it means!

That’s kindalike the two-for-onechili-dipped monsterburrito deal over at

Tangy Tacos!

I’ll take your word for it!

Page 7: My momma says that I’m confused a bout 99% of the time. Is that a lot?

Let’s Practice!−𝟑𝟎𝟑−𝟗𝟎−𝟔𝟓𝟔−𝟓

Multiply or divide. Answers.

Multiplying and Dividing Integers

But what ifI have to multiply

or divide more thantwo integers

at once?

That’s an excellent question!

It’sa gift!

Page 9: My momma says that I’m confused a bout 99% of the time. Is that a lot?

Multiplying and Dividing IntegersWhenever you multiply and/or

divide an expression with an even number of negative integers, your answer will

always be positive.Whenever you multiply and/or divide an expression with an odd

number of negative integers, your answer will always be

negative.

Page 10: My momma says that I’m confused a bout 99% of the time. Is that a lot?

Multiplying and Dividing IntegersExample. 1: –2 × (–3) × 4 × (–2) = Ex. 2: –32 ÷ 2 ÷ 4 ÷ (–2) =

Ex. 3: 25 ÷ (–5) × 4 ÷ (–4) × (–2) × (–7) =

48Since there are 3 negative integers, the answer must be negative.

–2

70Then, multiply from left to right to find

the product.

2 negative integers means a positive quotient.

4 negative integers means a positive answer. Then, multiply and divide from left

to right .

Multiplying and Dividing Integers

So I justcount negative

signs to determine the sign of my

answer?

That’s it! An even number equals a positive answer and an odd number

equals a negative answer.

Then Ican forget thesigns and just

multiply ordivide?

That’s right! Let’s

practice!

Page 12: My momma says that I’m confused a bout 99% of the time. Is that a lot?

Multiplying and Dividing Integers

3. 20 ÷ (–4) × 2 × 8 ÷ (–4) = 4. –1 × (–3) × 10 ÷ (–2) ÷ (–3) =

1. –6 ÷ 2 × 7 = 2. –4 × (–6) ÷ (–2) =

5. –6 ÷ (–3) × 7 ÷ (–7) × (–20) ÷ (– 8) =

–21 –12 20 5 –5

Multiply and/or divide.

You cancongratulate meafter I destroy a

couple dozen fried Twinkies!

So, how’d you do on the practice problems, Sparky?I might

have to consider myself a multiplying

and dividing integers’ ace, sir!

Congratulations!
