As we readied this latest issue for print, I became Mrs. Nia Christensen. What an eventful, chaotic, and downright fun process the wedding planning was!
Selecting the who, what, and where for the wedding swiftly became a never-ending list of decisions. I worked very closely with each one of my local vendors to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
May I say how lucky we are to have such amazing and talented business men and women here in the Flathead Valley? Am I biased if I ask why anyone would want to get married anywhere other than northwest Montana? There are many brilliant photographers in our area who are exceptionally skilled in capitalizing on every lighting effect and landscape detail, but pictures (worth thousands of words) are not difficult to capture here -- we’ll show you in this magazine!
Reading an old diary is often hilarious, right? And it typically serves as an enjoyable trip down memory lane well
worth the time and energy spent writing it. I understand that not every bride and groom will want to blog about their wedding adventures for the world to see, but I would highly recommend keeping track of this exciting time in some form or another. I’m sure you have mounds of to-do lists (as did I!), but take a few minutes to write down how you’re feeling and what you love or don’t love about this big wedding planning process. It will all fly by at a rapid pace and you’ll want to look back on it one day. There’s no better way to do that than with a wedding-specific journal! Don’t have one yet? Get one! Keep it near your Bridal Timeline (conveniently found on our mymontanawedding.com website), so that after your cake tasting and a sit down with your DJ, it’s readily available for you to jot down how your vendors made you smile.
Largely due to the ample time I gave myself for preparations, our wedding was a brilliant success. Sure, there were
a handful of glitches along the way, but they all worked themselves out in the end. There’s no need to stress about little things; on your big day, none of it will really matter, and who will notice other than you, anyway?
Wedding guests described our special day using words such as “beautiful”, “picturesque” and “exactly how a Montana wedding was envisioned.” As our party drew to an end and the Big Sky stars were brightly gleaming – we knew we had made it! We were happily married! That’s what mattered the most, and that’s what every Montana bride deserves.
I hope the 2014 edition of My Montana Wedding gives you the inspiration to create the wedding of your dreams and helps guide you down the exciting road you’ve chosen!
From me to you: Good luck & best wishes!

Memorable
Tyler and I were introduced through a mutual friend and were immediately drawn to one another. We began to see each other every weekend as he was finishing school in Missoula and I was living in the Flathead Valley.
After a seven-year relationship, we enjoyed our wedding on a typical midsummer evening in Montana, with warm breezes and sunny skies – the perfect setting for our country chic wedding theme. The ceremony included handpicked songs, and we were deeply moved as we shared our own vows with one another while beloved friends and family looked on.
Some of our most unforgettable moments included heartfelt toasts at dinner and a breathtaking sunset that seemed to laud the day’s events. The handmade decorations and barn wood trellis made by my father brought a higher level of meaning to the festivities, and guests and bridal party alike enjoyed the barbecue pork and vodka iced tea lemonade drink.
Our wedding was both memorable and special! We are profoundly thankful to our family and friends for their hard work and patience in helping
us prepare for and enjoy such a remarkable day.

A best friend calls with the exciting news that he or she is getting married. The first question that comes through the phone is, “Will you be a part of my wedding party?” you immediately say yes and think about all the fun it will be to help plan a wedding and, of course, be part of all the festivities
on the blessed day. But did you know there is so much more to being in a wedding than saying yes to the dress or suit and standing at the altar with your best friend?
As a wedding photographer I’ve spent a lot of time with wedding parties and
can say, without a doubt, that it’s within the wedding party that I witness the most drama. Most of it involves unmet expectations or just sheer miscommunication. That’s why this list will help you to be the best wedding party member possible.

attendants, which soundly conveys that the bridesmaids are there to tend to the bride. I’ve seen it time and time again, however: The roles are reversed, and the bride is instead serving her bridesmaids. Don’t do that. Be there to serve the bride and groom, and get them whatever they need. They need to stay hydrated, fed, and probably need help going to the bathroom.
3. Don’t complain about cost. According to weddingchannel.com the average cost of being a bridesmaid is $1,695! Wedding showers, bachelor or bachelorette parties, dresses or suits, travel, lodging, and more all add up quickly. Consider this carefully before accepting the role of bridesmaid or groomsman, and don’t feel it’s out of the question to say no if you simply can’t afford it. There is no shame in that, and your friend will understand. On the other hand, he or she won’t understand having to listen to those friends who have agreed to be wedding party members complain about how much something is going to cost.
4. Don’t leave the wedding or reception. I am amazed at the number of weddings I’ve photographed in which the wedding party simply leaves without even telling the bride and groom. This is very upsetting to many couples; they have chosen you and are relying on you to help keep the party going and celebrate with them. Just up and leaving is a big no-no!
5. Be the middleman. On the day of the wedding everyone is going to need something from the bride and groom. Try to ease their stress by being a buffer; be informed about what’s going on throughout the day, and communicate any needed information to those who need to know. This can greatly alleviate the couple’s stress and will be much appreciated!
1. Remember who the day is about. For one day forget about one word: YOU. The bride and groom get a free pass to make the day all about them. If they want the bridesmaids to wear hot pink taffeta dresses or the groomsmen to wear polka dot bowties, don’t complain; just rock the outfit! When pictures are
taking longer than anticipated, and it’s cocktail hour, just be patient a little longer; remember to heighten your friend’s happiness by being an awesome and positive part of their wedding.
2. Serve, serve, serve. Another word traditionally used for bridesmaids is

Shawn and I met as students at the university of Montana as we were pursuing our teaching degrees. We were both shy, so it took awhile for us to take that first step; when Shawn finally asked me to go fishing one weekend on a river near Missoula, I agreed. The fishing wasn’t very good, but I was certain I had made a good catch.
The wedding day arrived, and the vintage chic theme we had chosen, complete with burlap and baby’s breath, was perfectly accented by the backdrop of wilderness all around us. With my beloved uncle officiating and my dear sister coaxing sweet strains from her violin, we were
wed under the billowy white clouds coursing through the blue and sunny Montana skies.
At the reception, we enjoyed succulent, juicy-smoked turkey and signature cocktails; our favorite was the cucumber- and mint-infused gin made by a friend. The music was perfectly tailored for our guests as they had chosen their favorite songs when they RSVP’d.
I’ll always remember catching that first glimpse of my handsome husband at the end of the aisle. The day was so fulfilling, but if I could do it over again, I would be sure to walk a little more slowly,
breathe more deeply, and hug more tightly.

It’s very important to hire a professional for all your bridal needs, even when considering wedding-day makeup. There are many reasons why using a makeup artist can improve your wedding day memories!
When it Comes to Makeup,Leave it to the Professionals
First of all, your wedding photo sessions are one of the most important tasks surrounding your wedding celebration. The end product – your photos – will serve as a vivid reminder of your special day for years to come; you want those
photos to be sensational! Having your makeup professionally done will make this much easier for your photographer to accomplish. you might think since you do your own makeup all the time and want to look like you normally do, that you should just do your own makeup. Well, that’s not the case. everyday makeup can look shiny in photos, and the average person doesn’t know how makeup will look in different types of lighting. A little bit of gloss and powder may look fine for everyday life, but it just won’t cut it for a special occasion like this. Did you know that the camera will take away 50 percent of makeup? even a person with flawless skin should use at least 30 percent more makeup.
Another important point to remember is that you are going to be the star of the show on that special day and all eyes will be on you. People will see you from all angles, close and far; they’ll be snapping shots and videos of you and posting them on social media. you will be in an expensive and elaborate dress that is usually white or light-colored and exposes your arms and shoulders; all this can highlight shade differences between your face and other areas of your body which will need some color correction with makeup. you don’t want to look washed out, and you want to accentuate your best features!
Furthermore, a professional makeup artist will be able to help determine the style of makeup that best suits you and that will complement the theme of your wedding. using airbrush foundation will completely blend with your skin tone, will

not leave any lines, and will give a completely natural, untouched look. Having quality makeup ensures long-lasting coverage for the entire day!
Finally, professional makeup artists are skilled and knowledgeable regarding different methods of makeup application, whether it’s blending, matching color tone, etc. For example, one very important aspect is eye shadow. When makeup artists apply eye shadow, they consider many factors, such as whether the client
has wide- or close-set eyes, the size of their eyes, and even the shape.
There are so many factors that go into doing makeup; it’s best to hire a professional! you have plenty of other things to do on your wedding day; you’ve already put in so much work. Do you really want to have to worry about doing your own makeup? Just sit back, relax, and let someone else do it for you!
Tammy Garrison works at Raj Salon and has a master’s degree in makeup with a specialty in airbrush makeup.

Pint-SizeProcessionalRing bearers and flower girls can easily become the show stealers in any wedding ceremony – that is, of course, until the bride walks down the aisle! But what isn’t to love about watching those cute tykes, usually a little shy and sometimes outrageously comical, as they make their way, walking, running, screaming, crying – and sometimes even cooperating – down the aisle. To make these show stoppers even cuter, brides and grooms have begun merging their own creative fancies into this long standing tradition. Check out some of the awesome ideas from right here in northwest Montana.

The groomsmen are the groom’s best buds, his compadres; they’ve been there through his highest highs and, most importantly, his lowest lows. And now these guys are willing to stand next to him in front of family and friends as he says goodbye to bachelorhood and says “I do” to that special girl.
These groomsmen have agreed to rent tuxes, plan the bachelor party, give speeches, and help out with the big day. A simple handshake and “thank you” won’t cut it this time; they need to be shown the appreciation that every groomsman deserves with a custom gift that says thank you like a weekend in Vegas without the price tag (or regrets).
Maybe the outdoorsman in all of them can be showcased during the wedding with custom recycled 12-gauge shotgun-shell cuff links; alternatively, they can be taken on a golf outing and given monogrammed golf balls, tees, and towels.
This token of appreciation doesn’t necessarily have to be a one-time-use gift, however. Give them something they can use every Sunday during the game with a .50-caliber bullet bottle opener or a personalized, engraved beer mug.
Another option is found in the more traditional, sentimental gifts that have endured through the years. A custom engraved pocket watch, money clip, or pocket knife serves as a priceless reminder of that memorable day.
Finding the perfect groomsmen gifts can be easier than one might think. Consider all the hobbies and interests that have been shared over the years, and choose a gift that will be used and remembered during those activities. The groom knows his groomsmen better than anyone else and, chances are, he’s also better equipped to choose that uniquely perfect gift.

Troy and I are both rodeo fans, so it is quite fitting that we met at a rodeo. The second time we met was when Troy came to another rodeo he knew I would be attending; that was the beginning…
Our wedding was held on the evening of a summery meadow’s day, where wildflowers abounded, and the view of the Mission Mountains was a perfect backdrop to our brightly-colored, country chic wedding theme.
The ceremony was quite nontraditional, but we did indulge in some favorite wedding-day traditions, such as cutting the cake, toasting, and
sharing a first dance. In perfect Montana style, we allowed our dogs to play a significant role in the ceremony and reception.
My stepfather auctioned off my garter to raise money for our honeymoon. It was a blast!
I delegated as many tasks as I could, and was able to just enjoy and be fully engaged in every moment of our special day.
That first look from Troy, the smiling faces of our family and friends, and the gorgeous view of mountains and meadow will color my memories
for a lifetime.

The wedding is over and you’ve
walked down the aisle in the dress
of your dreams. you wore it a total
of 10 hours and now it’s ready to be
packaged up and stored for the rest
of your life because, let’s face it: Do
you really believe your daughter will
think your dress is as awesome as you
do? Doubtful.
Many brides are foregoing long-term
storage of their dresses and are in-
stead opting to participate in “trash
the dress” or “rock the dress” photo
sessions. Basically, these are sessions
in which you can be photographed
enjoying any chosen activity, risking
the chance of getting the dress dirty
without any of the wedding-day wor-
ry. Some brides can’t wait to jump
into the amazing Flathead Lake
in their dress, while others choose
something a little more tame, like
traipsing through a canola field.
Regardless of the activity you choose
for your dress, these sessions will pro-
vide a memorable opportunity to
rock that dress one more time!

Snow BrideWinters in northwest Montana get a bad rap. yes, it’s cold, and the sun sets a lot sooner, but there are multiple advantages to getting married in the winter. From off-season discounts to some of the most crystalline snow-capped mountain views imaginable, winter weddings are definitely something to consider. Brides can incorporate beautiful fur jackets into their wedding ensemble, and grooms can actually stay cool in their tuxedo rather than sweating all day. Don’t believe it’s possible? The groom often takes a more passive
role when it comes to wedding planning
and festivities, but we all know he is the
rock upon which the bride leans as the
big day approaches. Here are some
comments from a newly wed groom
who survived the wedding day hoopla
without losing his sense of humor.
Q: What was your part in planning?
A: I spent time meeting with vendors, visiting venues, selecting tuxes, and tasting potential meals. However, my wife planned and organized most of it. My biggest role was signing the checks.
Q: Do you have any advice for other grooms?
A: The wedding will go by quickly. Try to relax and enjoy it.
Q: What was the best decision that was made for your wedding?
A: I’m glad we chose to hire professionals. They made the wedding flow smoothly and transition nicely.
Q: What was the best part of your wedding?
A: The food was delicious, my wife was gorgeous, and the reception was a blast, but getting it all over with felt the best.
Q: What was the most stressful part of the wedding or planning of the wedding?
A: Planning in general was the most stressful. It’s unreal how much time needs to be spent preparing for a wedding.
Q: If you could change anything from your wedding, what would it be?A: I would have limited her drinking.

Øyvind and I met during a summer conference in Norway, where we quickly became good friends and corresponded through email and facebook over the course of a year. When we both took jobs in Oslo, Norway, a romantic relationship blossomed between us.
Two years after we began dating, Øyvind proposed. With my love for second-hand treasures and a desire from both of us to blend Montana and Norwegian culture in a beautiful and artistic way, we chose a simply elegant and Montana vintage theme for our wedding.
Our wedding was held under the beautiful
Montana summer sun along the shores of Flathead Lake. We enjoyed a lovely, traditional ceremony with a reception to follow. The Norwegian touches throughout the day were exciting and unique. We had to stand on chairs and kiss when guests tinged their glasses. There were speeches during dinner from my new husband and I along with family members, and our two Norwegian friends emceed the reception.
Our wedding was charming and inspiring, and
neither of us will ever forget that walk down the
aisle or the look in one another’s eyes as we
joined our hearts in the presence of loved ones.

What does it take for someone to choose a profession and dedicate their life to it? A good doctor must have a love for anatomy and a calling to nurture the human body; an architect must have a love for design and the creation of structures. So, does a wedding planner have a love for planning? Maybe, but there are hundreds of jobs that offer the opportunity to plan. No, a wedding planner has a love for planning the life-changing event in which the most romantic, important, and honest exchange of human compassion is celebrated. A wedding planner loves...LOVe. A talent for planning combined with a passionate respect for marriage makes the perfect wedding planner.
In a sense, a wedding planner is a building contractor. Does the average person know how to properly lay a foundation or correctly frame a home? Probably not, and that is why people hire a contractor to oversee the work of each
Hiring a Wedding Plannerfor Peace of Mind
subcontractor. Likewise, the biggest mistake a bride can make is to fail to hire a wedding planner, and nothing is more heartbreaking than hearing the story of a wedding day gone wrong.
A planner guides the bride through the wedding process, assisting in whatever capacity is needed. She brainstorms with the bride about her vision for the wedding, down to the smallest detail, and refines those ideas. A planner introduces the bride to the best vendors and knows how to contract each vendor efficiently. She suggests ways to use a budget wisely in order to avoid wasting or misspending money. A planner advises the bride on proper etiquette. She creates a wedding timeline and makes sure each and every detail is carried out flawlessly. In short, she is a personal assistant, designer, contractor, advisor, and cheerleader, and if allowed to do her job, can make the process easy, enjoyable and stress free.
Perhaps the most important job a professional wedding planner has is orchestrating the wedding day itself. The planner is responsible for making sure the event is set up as planned, the timeline is followed, and that vendors are doing their job. She is the ringleader, problem solver, psychologist, and friend. It is important to understand that a wedding planner has professional responsibility for the entire event and therefore has a vested interest in the overall success of the celebration.
When hiring a planner, find out how many events she coordinates each season and make sure she is not too busy. Ask how long she has been in the business and why she was inspired to start wedding planning. This will help gauge her level of experience and enthusiasm for the job. If her personality is not a good match, don’t hire her. She will become a big part of the your life and therefore must be a joy to work with.

I think most everyone in the wedding industry has chosen to dedicate their lives to the celebration of love. Whether it’s the limo driver at the grand exit, the florist making bouquets, the photographer behind the camera, the caterer preparing food, or the rental company delivering chairs, we all intensely believe in love; we have made it our business! We want every celebration to be successful. So, our advice to brides: consider hiring a wedding planner who can coordinate and organize everything in order to make your wedding day a memorable success!

Shawn and I met in high school, but didn’t become a couple until years after graduation when we met at a softball tournament. We fell in love and have been inseparable ever since.
We chose a country chic theme for our wedding, complete with cowboy boots. Although the weather had been dark and foreboding leading up to the wedding, our special day broke clear and sunny with much warmer temperatures.
I wanted guests to enter our barn venue and think, “This is Nia and Shawn’s party.” It was easy and attainable expense-wise, and fun to unfold and create. This was what I envisioned as “My Montana Wedding.”
Instead of traditional favors, we chose nontradi-tional entertainment during the reception; it was amazing! We had a mechanical bull, bonfire, midnight grilled-cheese bar, and great bartend-ers. My mom also surprised us with a larger-than-life cake with alternating mango and huckleber-ry layers; it was fantastic!
I’ll never forget the look on Shawn’s face when he saw me dressed in white and coming forward to take his hand in marriage. As he whispered, “you look absolutely gorgeous,” I knew there was no chance the rest of the evening could be any-thing but absolutely perfect -- and it was.
