My music video: Paradise – Coldplay Teenager girl who is unhappy with her life, often escapes reality and dreams of other places she wants to be Her family parents fight a lot, so she is often forgotten and is forces to listen to them argue every night while she is in her room. Throughout the beginning of the music video she is in her room playing with nic nacs that remind her of all the places she’d rather be – flashes to shots of scenery. She is shown living a dull life, she goes to school and has no friends * She comes home to her parents fighting again, runs to her room and dreams of paradise – scenes of the beach, sunsets etc… Shots of girl there – only the back of her head * The next morning her parents are still fighting so she runs away – always wants to explore. She fins the places she wanted to be – her paradise – she is happy. But soon she realises she is lonely and misses home – where she belongs with her family. She comes home later that night to find her parents have been worrying about her a lot and then they greet her warmly – group hug. * shots of reality always show girl’s face. (1) Codes and Conventions (2) Montage Cutaways – close up shots of girl’s possessions, then cutaways to shots of the place the object symbolises. This reveals to the audience the more personal aspect behind the character’s belongings, overall helping the audience understand the character better. These cutaway shots between objects and places ** Lighting – bright lighting when shooting at the beach and gardens, dark gloomy lighting when the girl is in her room and walking to school. This can create a big impact on the audience by making them feel warm and happy and sad and sympathetic during the appropriate scenes. Using the different contrast of lighting helps sets the mood * Camera work – variety of close ups, mid, wide, focusing, zooming, low and over the shoulder shots etc. This will better portray the music video through diverse shots to keep the audience interested. With the use of specific shots (close ups etc.) better clarifies the certain aspect behind it. Symbolic images – of each possession shown in the girl’s room symbolises each place she considers ‘paradise’. This can be relatable to the audience as generally many people keep objects/things that remind them of happy memories or hopes and dreams. The symbolism behind each object helps communicated the girl’s desperation to be reminded of her paradise and her need to escape often. Stereotypes: loner/misfit – the protagonist in this music video is portrayed as a misfit/loner and in all scenes (except the end scene) she is alone. This will appeal specifically to teenagers because stereotypes are common in modern society and many teenagers do feel alone and misunderstood some point. **establish what she wants and match the lyrics (‘every time she closed her eyes’) so we can see what she is thinking *between the sad, lonely reality and that the girl just wants to feel safe Locations: Props: (5) My house – my bedroom and driveway and front door Nic Nacs – seashells, jars full of sand, flowers, tickets Bus – maybe dairy? Beach Botanical gardens Costume/Hair/Make Up: (5) School uniform (winter style) – scarf, stockings Dress – summery/light/maybe floral Hair – fish tail plait/down/bun Worn out chucks Light make up throughout Casual wear – t-shirt, cardigan, leggings Setting: The setting in the beginning of the music video takes place in the character’s room and walking to school. The setting near the end of the music video takes place at the beach and gardens. The contrast between the gloomy indoor/everyday settings in the beginning to the bright, colourful and joyful settings of the gardens… (3) Tone: The tone for this music video is sad and serene with a ‘coming of age’ genre aspect to it. With the use of setting, the beach and the gardens will create the calm and beautiful aspect to the music video. We will also use close ups to clearly reveal the loneliness and sadness the girl feels and gloomy lighting to set the sad tone of the music video to make the audience feel her need to escape and the comfort she finds in her ‘paradise’ ….
