Honest: British soul singer Joss Stone has spoken for the firs t time about the tw o

me n jailed for planning to kidnap and behead her - and revealed, remark ably, that

she 'fee ls sorry' for them

British soul singer Joss Stone has spoken for the first time about the two men jailed for planning tokidnap and behead her – and revealed, remarkably, that she ‘feels sorry’ for them.

In an exclusive interview with today’s Mail on Sunday Event Magazine, the 26-year-old star also admitsthat she is still baffled by what inspired the men – who plotted to kill her with a samurai sword and stealher fortune – to target her.

Joss, who has sung for rock legends and royalty, says: ‘There was a big part of me that felt sorry for them, sorry for their mums. I kept thinking, “What drives people to do something so awful as this?”

‘How do you get to a point in your life where things are so bad, so confused that this seems the rightthing to do?

‘I thought about their mums, how they must feel. Someone comes to their door and says, “Your child hastried to murder someone.”

‘They still have to love their sons. That’s the worst part for me.

‘I did actually want to ask them why. Was it because of me? Was it because I sang a song they hated?

Was it because of something I did?’

Joss came face to face with the men at Exeter Crown Court three months ago when Kevin Liverpool, 35,was given a life sentence for the plot and Junior Bradshaw, 32, was given 18 years.

In the interview she gives a candid account of the moment she was told her life was in danger as the

drama unfolded in June, 2011.

She says: ‘The day it happened I had a load of people at my house, as I pretty much always do.

‘A policeman turned up and said, “We’ve arrested some people because we think they were trying tokidnap you.”

‘It just seemed pretty weird, and then a few hours later I got a call saying someone from CID needed tocome round.

‘They turned up and told me it wasn’t a kidnap plot – they were trying to kill me. That did feel totallystrange.’

The men were apprehended, and their plot revealed, only when they crashed their car then beganasking Joss’s neighbours where she lived while brandishing a picture of the star.

Convicted: Kevin Liverpool (left) was se ntenced to life after targe ting the singer.

Junior Bradshaw (right) who suffers from 'disorganised schizophrenia' and who

claimed he w as me rely a 'foot soldier', was given 18 years

against her were discovered

She says: ‘It’s thanks to the police and my neighbours that nothing happened. That actually made mefeel really happy about where I live, the people who surround me. I didn’t even know all of them buteveryone looked out for me.’

Joss reveals how she has dealt with the after-effects of realising she could have been killed and how anunlikely friendship with war photographer Paul Conroy has given her the courage to fight for what shebelieves in.

Last year, she reportedly paid record company EMI £10 million to buy her way out of her contract.

And she says that she has now turned her back on the potential of earning millions of pounds fromrecording and touring for a life of normality in the close-knit community where she grew up.

She says it was Conroy, who was with the Sunday Times journalist Marie Colvin when she died in abomb blast in Syria last year, who backed her to leave her record label.

‘He was my strength in that. It was a massive thing to do, fight to get out of a contract that had made me,made a fortune – and it cost me a fortune,’ she says. ‘Even my dad told me I was mad to do it. But Paulwas like, “Go on, stand up and fight for what you believe in.”

Close: Joss has been good friends w ith the 48-year-old war photographer Paul

Conroy, who was w ounded in Syria, since she w as a teenager

‘I didn’t even have a lawyer, it was me against the might of EMI and a lot of the time I felt like a total idiot, but he kept encouraging me, and I did it. I’ve never looked back.’

Joss – who lives near 48-year-old Conroy in their native Devon – has known the photographer since shewas 15, when he was assigned to make a video documentary of a charity trip she made to Africa.

She says: ‘Every night for two weeks we’d sit by the side of the road and talk.

‘He’d tell me stories, talk about where he wanted to go, what he wanted to do. We just got on. After thathe came on tour with me. He’s always been my news, this guy who tells me what is going on in the world, the really important stuff – a million miles away from what I do.’

Joss has a hotly anticipated new single coming out – The Love We Had, taken from her album SoulSessions 2 – but says she no longer wants the fame she once had.

She is happy singing in the music bar her mother runs in Devon and cherishes her life away from thespotlight. She says: ‘I have a completely normal existence at home in Devon; I go to the shops, I havemates from way back.

‘It’s taken me a long time to be happy with how I live and where I live. No one looks twice at me.

'I don't think you should die for what you do':

Joss Stone's revealing interview over

terrifying plot to murder her

By Louise Gannon

On the m urder plot: 'They didn't kill me, they didn't even harm me , the whole thing

was this ridiculous, bizarre story that was in some ways like the most random black

comedy,' said Joss Stone

In the late afternoon lull of a London private members’ club Joss Stone is talking about life, death andthe risks you take to do the job you do.

Her long, corn-blonde hair is trailing down her back hippy-child style, and as she speaks the slim, silver bangles on her wrist jangle and tinkle as she waves her hands to emphasise her point.

Stone has a new single to promote but right now we’re not talking about music.

Instead, Stone is telling me the full and harrowing story of how she was nearly murdered in her home bytwo strangers in June 2011, and about the court ordeal that followed. It is the first time she has spokenin any detail about the plot to kill her.

Just three months ago, Stone stood in Exeter Crown Court and faced Junior Bradshaw, 32, and KevinLiverpool, 35 – who had plotted to behead her with a samurai sword and rob her of her alleged £10million fortune.

Stone, 26, is initially remarkably sanguine about the experience, insisting she won’t alter her lifestyle.

‘I’m not going to change everything because of this,’ she tells me.

'It didn't happen. Don't give it any more powe r and just get on w ith life,' said Joss

‘They didn’t kill me, they didn’t even harm me, the whole thing was this ridiculous, bizarre story that was

in some ways like the most random black comedy. That’s how I see it.’

The plain facts of the attack were, nevertheless, horrific.

The murder plot involved two hapless, jobless, cannabis-smoking criminals from Manchester, who droveto Stone’s house in Devon in a car that was packed with balaclavas, knives, hammers, a large metalspike and a garden hose.

A search of their flats uncovered more weapons and scribbled notes about other celebrities (includingBeyoncé).

Stone (the pair called her a ‘she-devil’) was apparently targeted due to her friendship with Prince William – the singer was his guest at the Royal Wedding.

The two men were stopped by police after crashing their car and asking locals for the whereabouts of Stone’s house, flashing her photograph as identification.

The judge summed up their crime as ‘a crazy scheme from a crazy person’. Liverpool was sentenced tolife, Bradshaw (who suffers from ‘disorganised schizophrenia’ and who claimed he was merely a ‘footsoldier’) was given 18 years.

I ask Stone if she thinks it was fair the press accused her of being flip in the aftermath of the sentencingwhen she commented that the case was ‘something to tell my grandchildren, something to add to thetapestry of life’.

Did she understand the gravity of the situation?

She shakes her head: ‘Are you kidding? I totally get the gravity of the situation. I was in court. I had thepolice guarding my house. But to me the most important thing is that it didn’t actually happen.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/my-sorrow-for-men-who-plotted-to-behead-with-me-with-samurai-sword 8/17

‘They got caught, nothing happened to me. And when I speak about it, I don’t want to carry any fear about it, make this thing that didn’t actually happen affect the way I live.

‘There is more than one way to react.

'I could be devastated, scared, crying, afraid to be left on my own, I could go for a sympathy vote or Icould say… just get up, carry on.

'It didn’t happen. Don’t give it any more power and just get on with life.

‘It’s taken me a long time to be happy with how I live and where I live and that’s incredibly important tome.’

She pauses: ‘The day it happened I had a load of people at my house, as I pretty much always do. Apoliceman turned up and said, “We’ve arrested some people because we think they were trying tokidnap you.”

On the celebrity culture: 'It's just not that important to me. I always saw it as a barrier

more than anything and I don't w ant those barriers ,' said Joss (pictured at the Diana

Memorial Concert in 2007)

'It just seemed pretty weird, and then a few hours later I got a call saying someone from CID needed tocome round.

'They turned up and told me it wasn’t a kidnap plot – they were trying to kill me. That did feel totallystrange.

‘It didn’t totally sink in. The next morning I got up, opened my door and went to get my dog from thedriveway. I looked up and saw two people running towards me holding these black things – they wereactually photographers but I was just thinking, “Oh God! Are they guns?”

‘Then the whole of my road was covered in news crews. Huge great vans. It was completely surreal.

'There was this absolute feeling of complete unreality for me, and then my little cat, Vivien, went missing.I’d rescued her as a kitten – she was tossed in a hedge.

'She was really friendly and had gone up to see all the vans, but she had been run over. A policemanhad been put on my door by then, he knocked and told me what had happened. That was when I cried.’

There is a depth to Stone beneath the hippy-chick image, beyond the fame and fortune, beyond therelative lack of concern for this dreadful event. More than that, there is a groundedness.

Joss's friendship w ith the Royals w as part of Liverpool and Bradshaw's m otivation

‘I have a completely normal existence at home in Devon; I go to the shops, I have mates from way back, I

sing in my mum’s bar – no one looks twice at me. That’s how I like it,’ she says.

It is also clear that she has no real truck with celebrity culture.

‘It’s just not that important to me. I always saw it as a barrier more than anything and I don’t want thosebarriers.’

It was why she chose to give millions back to her record company in order to have genuine freedom fromthat lifestyle.

It was, ironically, Stone’s openness and the fact she is a visible presence in her close-knit communitythat saved her from her attackers. Neighbours spotted the two men behaving suspiciously and alertedthe police, who acted instantly.

She is full of praise for her neighbours, and for the police.

‘They were my knights in shining armour. They were there for me 24/7. They were kind, they wereconsiderate and they made me feel safe,’ she says.

‘It’s thanks to them and thanks to my neighbours that nothing happened.

'That actually made me feel really happy about where I live, about the people who surround me. I didn’teven know all of them but everyone looked out for me.’

It was her gratitude to the police that made her turn up in court.

‘For ages I thought I didn’t want to be there, I wasn’t a witness, I didn’t actually need to be there, but thepolice wanted me to go and I wanted to do something for them, to pay them back for protecting me withtheir full force.

‘They wanted me to go so that people would see I’m not some vague “pop star”, I’m a person. Like them.If you cut me, I bleed. I mean, I get that. I don’t want people to feel sorry for me.’

She pauses: ‘I did feel incredibly nervous when I walked into court. But I just didn’t look at the two men.

'My dad told me not to look at them, to look anywhere but at them. He said it would give them somethingif I looked at them and they didn’t deserve anything from me. I looked at the barrister, at the jury,

anywhere but at them.’

'It makes m e depresse d that people think some one who sings can't behave like a

normal pers on,' said Joss (picture with Stevie Wonder)

But Stone remains conflicted: ‘There was a big part of me that felt sorry for them, sorry for their mums. Ikept thinking, “What drives people to do something so awful as this?”

‘It’s not about whether one of them is schizophrenic or not, it’s just thinking, how do you get to a point inyour life where things are so bad, so confused that this seems the right thing to do?

‘And I don’t blame their parents. I thought about their mums, how they must feel.

'Someone comes to their door and says, “Your child has tried to murder someone.” They still have tolove their sons. That’s the worst part for me. And…’

She pauses and shakes her head: ‘I did actually want to ask them why. Was it because of me? Was it

because I sang a song they hated? Was it because of something I did?

'The police told me to stop thinking about it, that you can’t think like that, because the whole thing isabout insanity and there is no rational explanation.’

Born Jocelyn Eve Stoker, Stone was famous and extremely well-connected from an early age.

At 15 she was performing for American presidents and British Royalty, and she counts new parents KateMiddleton and Prince William among her friends (Stone sang at their wedding but won’t be drawn on anyKensington Palace gossip).

She has won Grammys, Brits and sold more than ten million albums, and in 2006 was the youngestwoman ever to appear in The Rich List.

She’s duetted with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Elton John and, in 2011, joined a supergroup –SuperHeavy – with Mick Jagger.

Jagger recently told me this about Stone: ‘She’s a throwback – Joss is old school. She knows what shedoes is her job and she is who she is. She’s in this because she loves it. Not for anything else.

'And she’s funny. She never stops talking, never stops singing these little tunes. It’s nice being around ahappy person.

Joss w ith her m other Wendy

'I do have to tell her off every now and again for smoking, though. She smokes these little roll-ups.Murder on the voice.’

Stone recalls an anecdote that sums up her take on celebrity perfectly.

‘At Elton John’s wedding I was put in diamonds. I didn’t even ask for them, but you can’t kick up a fussand say no, so you just smile and let them do it.

‘And then I’m there with these bloody diamonds on and I was on the dancefloor dancing my little butt off having a laugh and then I felt my ears and one of them was gone.

'So then I’m scrabbling on the floor under all these people’s feet looking a right idiot trying to find thisdiamond, feeling sick because if I don’t find it then I have to pay for it.

‘Thank God I did. But for me it’s just way too stressful; I’d rather wear a £2 pair I’ve got at home.

‘My life,’ she continues, ‘has never been exactly normal. Bizarre things happen to me.

'I was travelling round America at 15, standing in a room full of stars, having a cup of tea with Elton whenI was 16.

'I was fighting a (multi-million-pound) court case on my own when I was in my early 20s.

'The attack just seemed yet another twist. Another mad, crazy thing.’

Ironically, one of the most unlikely things to happen in Stone’s young life full of showbiz stars was her

friendship with a very unstarry local photographer.

Stone has been good friends with the 48-year-old war photographer Paul Conroy since she was ateenager and it’s this relationship that has largely helped her re-frame the ordeal of the past year.

Conroy was with the journalist Marie Colvin in Syria when she was killed in February 2012 and was badlyinjured himself.

‘I don’t think you should die for what you do,’ Stone says about Conroy’s bravery in the line of duty.

‘I mean, no one is indestructible. You have to think of your family; think about the people who love you.’

She lives near Conroy in Devon. They met when she was 15 and he was assigned to make a videodocumentary of a charity trip she made to Africa.

‘Every night for two weeks we’d sit by the side of the road and talk,’ Stone says. ‘He’d tell me stories, about where he wanted to go, what he wanted to do. We just got on.

'After that he came on tour with me. He’s always been my news, this guy who tells me what is going on inthe world. The really important stuff – a million miles away from what I do.’

Conroy remained close to Stone as her career sky-rocketed from Devon schoolgirl to Grammy-winningstar performing at the White House, draped in designer clothes and diamonds.

Stone maintains she was never comfortable: ‘I always felt like a travelling freak show, this kid with the bigold voice. I always wanted just to be at home.’

When she finally kicked back at the music industry and refused to toe the line, it was Conroy whobacked her: ‘He was my strength in that. It was a massive thing to do, fight to get out of a contract thathad made me, made a fortune – and it cost me a fortune. Even my dad told me I was mad to do it.

‘But Paul was like, “Go on, stand up and fight for what you believe in.”

'I didn’t even have a lawyer, it was me against the might of EMI and a lot of the time I felt like a total idiot, but he kept encouraging me, and I did it. I’ve never looked back.’

Stone’s new single, a rich, soulful version of The Love We Have, taken from her current album SoulSessions 2, is as assured and confident a song as she has ever released.

She wants people to like it (‘love it, actually’, she laughs) but she doesn’t want the fame she once had.

‘People don’t believe me when I say it,’ she says. ‘Even people in my own family. I was very young and Ifound the whole thing really uncomfortable and embarrassing. You go into a shop and people look atyou; it makes you just feel totally self-conscious.

‘I’d be travelling round, staying in the best hotels, performing on all these shows and I just wanted to beback in Devon with my mates, going down the local shops and no one paying a blind bit of attention. That’s what I’ve got now.’

It’s not entirely true. After our lunch is over, she is off to do a shoot for Vanity Fair. In America, Stone is abona fide singing legend.

She doesn’t read magazines or daily papers; the only newspaper that she takes is her local one, TheWellington Gazette.

‘It’s full of stories about little girls and their pet guinea pigs and grannies making hats – it’s really happy,’she explains.

She knows nothing of Nigella Lawson’s divorce (‘That’s sad’) or Adele’s wedding and baby (‘I love her album though’).

She can, however, talk about Syria and Libya with some real degree of knowledge. She has – withConroy – made records for Amnesty.

‘That’s my way of doing something,’ she says.

In her own divorce from EMI she cut herself loose from the celebrity circuit.

She lives in the house she grew up in (she bought it from her parents after they divorced), remains closeto her family and has a life that involves certain extreme anecdotes.

She recalls: ‘I was in Spain living in a camper van, helping a mate scrub the barnacles off his boat. Youhave to scrub it inch by inch, then paint this blue preservative all over it.

‘I was covered in the stuff. Then we had to drain the oil from the engine.

‘I got a call from Dave Stewart asking me to work on his album. I got my mate to look after my dogs, flewto LA and then back to Spain to carry on working on the boat.’

Tell her it’s not something you expect a singer to do and she pulls a face.

‘Why not? It makes me depressed that people think someone who sings can’t behave like a normalperson.’

Stone has separated her life and her work. When she thinks of being a star, she thinks of places like America and Brazil. Meanwhile, ‘home is home’, she says.

‘I don’t do full-on tours here – it’s where I live. You can see me any night of the week in my mum’s placein Devon (Mama Stone’s). I do gigs there with artists I admire – next week I’m playing with BeverleyKnight, who I love, but that’s where I hang out with my mates, it’s where we all go to sing.‘I’ll do other one-off gigs but not big tours.

'I like the fact that I’ve pulled everything back here, I can do what I do, just get on with my life. Nothing isgoing to stop that.’

I kind of fell in love with her having seen her portray Anne of Cleves in 'The Tudors' - I assumed she was a m uch older

actress as her performance was s o amazing. She appears to be incredibly well grounded - something that is very, very

rare in the world of showbusiness. Her Mum ain't bad either :-)
