The target for 2011 is 70 000 Santa Shoeboxes, which will

be dispatched to more than 600 children’s homes,

orphanages and other child care institutions across the

country, in time to place a happy smile on many a child’s

face this festive season.

With ‘teach your child the joy of giving’ as the essence of

the project, donors are encouraged to involve their own

children in the process of personally selecting the name

of a specific child, and putting together his or her, age

appropriate Santa Shoebox gift according to the

guidelines provided. These include some practical

necessities, such as toothpaste and toothbrush, face cloth

and soap, as well as sweets, educational supplies, a toy

and an item of clothing.

Enter into the spirit of Christmas early this year and

register on-line at www.santashoebox.co.za

The gift wrapped Santa Shoeboxes need to be dropped

off at central distribution points across the country

between 20 October and 4 November.

Santa Shoebox Project

is a non-profit organization

that collects Christmas gifts

for underprivileged children

throughout South Africa,

by way of a social and

community network of

families, friends, schools and churches.

The Santa Shoebox Project is instrumental in involving

people from all walks of life, especially children together

with their parents, in giving to children from a distinctly

vulnerable social background who may never have

received a Christmas gift before. Many people have a

desire to contribute to their community or do their

‘little bit for charity’, but often don’t know where to

start.

The Santa Shoebox Project takes pride in channeling all

that positive energy into something that is credible,

makes a real difference in a specific child’s life and leaves

the donor feeling really good about him or herself.

September marked the launch of this year’s heart

warming Santa Shoebox Project, which has been

collecting Christmas gifts for thousands of under-

privileged children throughout the country since 2006

The Seychelles

A short flight from South Africa, lie 115 Coral atolls and

granite islands carved and polished by the wind and the

sea, these are the Seychelles, an archipelago of over one

hundred islands scattered in the Indian Ocean just below

the equator between 480km and 1,600 km from the

coast of East Africa.

A tropical paradise of beaches, sun and palm trees, the

Seychelles are a real nature reserve that is home to the

last virgin forests of the Indian Ocean and where

surviving plants, flowers and animals unique to the

world. It is an archipelago of rare beauty, tranquility and

harmony that is famous for its incomparable beaches

and the great diversity which rolls from lush forests

down to the crystal clear warm waters. The Seychelles are

one of the last frontiers and promises adventure and

breathtaking scenery in an unpolluted environment and

untouched by man and are the most ancient mid-oceanic

granite islands in the world.

The Seychelles have, among their treasures, no less ...

than two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the legendary

Vallée de Mai, where the amazing Coco de mer nut grows

wild and legendary Aldabra, the biggest coral atoll in the

world first seen by Arab sailors in the ninth century.

The weather is beautiful all year round and always pleasant

thanks to a constant ventilation with average temp

between 25°C and 30°C. Being outside the cyclone zone

makes the islands a year round destination for sun and

beach lovers.

From November to April the islands are touched by the

wind from the northwest, it’s warmer with rainfall and

the sea is generally calm, from May to October

temperatures are slightly cooler and drier with winds

from the southeast. In Apr - May and Oct - Nov the

weather is warm there is no wind with calm, clear seas.

When to Go:

Deep-sea fishing - from October to April

Surfing and windsurfing - from May to Sept.

Diving - from March to May and from Sept. to Nov.

The Blue Sea Divers Centre - Seychelles(certified FFESSM, CEDIP, PADI AND CMAS)

We are ideally located at the very heart of the action

right on Beau Vallon Beach,on Mahé Island near the

marine reserve, and enjoy easy access to the most

beautiful dive sites of the island.

The fully equipped boats and professional team of dive

masters will help you discover the diversity of the varied

and prolific underwater marine life.

It is possible to dive all year round but the quality of dive

sites varies depending on prevailing winds. The water

temp is 29 ºC and visibility extends beyond 30 metres.

From May to August, visibility is reduced and the water

is colder (25 °C). We suggest a wetsuit of at least 4 mm.

The depth of dives vary from 8 to 20 meters for sites

near the coast and up to 40 meters for open water dives

and wrecks.

The marine flora and fauna of the nearby islands reveal

an abundance of fish on reefs near the coast: several

species of butterfly fish, angelfish, emperor, soldier fish,

squirrel fish, parrot fish and glass fish are just some

species among many. The cliffs also hide many species of

invertebrates among which there are octopus, lobster...

and a plethora of nudibranchs such as Spanish dancers.

Sites where there is always current you will see growing

gorgonian and colorful coral formations while in more

remote sites you will find bigger species such as big

napoléons, giant groupers, reef sharks and rays. Among

the most spectacular species, whale sharks encircle the

islands from June to December, especially in September

and October

From late 2012 the Blue Sea Divers Dive Centre will offer

the chance to cruise the Seychelles on board the

amazing new Galatea with six brand new spacious cabins

on board, it has specifically being designed for diving

cruises and is equipped with all modern comforts.

This is the KTM X-BOW

These mark the entry into the fantastic world called

X-BOW and of course to some degree, it is the attributes

of these vehicles – aggressive design and sporting

potential - that transform the KTM X-BOW R into the

most outstanding super sports car available today.

The ‘Street’ and the ‘Clubsport’ can generate 240 h.p

thanks to the proven 2.0 TFSI Audi engine.

The performance is no less impressive - beginning with

the acceleration right up to the lateral acceleration in the

curves – and of course you can have a whole lot of fun

both on the road and the racetrack with both of these

cars.

For all those who regularly make at trip to the racing

circuit there is a special KTM X-BOW designed

specifically for their requirements and needs:

the ‘Clubsport’. This car perfectly combines the

requirements of a street legal vehicle with those suitable

for the racing circuit, primarily because of the many

features that directly derive from motorsports like the

suspension, which with its adjustable shock absorbers

(including preload adjuster) in pushrod arrangement is

already familiar to the technology from Formula racing

cars, and with adjustable stabilizers and more precisely

adjustable pushrods that offers both the semi-

professional and the passionate hobby driver a range of

options. The steel roll bar, fire extinguisher, side

protection drops, 6-point seat belts emergency stop

switch, racing headrest and dry cell battery round off the

list of special features.

So whether its for Sundays or Track days these are

special vehicles that will keep you smiling !

The KTM X-BOW is available in models ranging

from a street version to a full blown Ready to Race

Jules Kim of Bijules seeks to delve into rarely visited

places in the fashion and jewellery worlds.

It is this path of discovery which identifies her work.

Jules Kim, the creator of Bijules, is unapologetically

conquering the balance of art and aesthetics in jewellery.

This makes her one of those rare artists who harbour

the ability to create objects that Mirror the beautiful and

chaotic world we inhabit: with all its humour, tragedy,

ambivalence, love and hate…

To be in the company of Jules is to be in the presence of

a seer – a visionary : who calmly describes the world's

mysteries in ways never before thought or expressed.

At times it's difficult to separate the artist from the art –

overwhelmed with the beauty of a goddess, allowing you

to discover novelty within yourself. Jules doesn't just

make jewellery : she makes an experience. With an ear to

the ground of the fashion world.

“The jewelry industry is a well - mapped frontier in searchof discovery” -- Jules Kim

Jules has demonstrated her ability to transcend the

ordinary limits of vision and thoughts. It’s difficult to

know what to do with it… then you realize Jules has

given you a universal experience that adapts to your

current situation.

You allow the jewellery to emanate the confidence the

creator bestowed upon it at the moment of its creation.

Defying time, normality and traditional forms of

expression, Jules has proved that she is an artist to be

reckoned with, sought after, and cherished.

Celebrity clients are Beyonce, Fergie, Nicki Minaj,

Lindsay Lohan, Mariah Carey, Shakira,

Hai time for a “Boho” change !

Hai.bo, a proudly SA brand that will be

taking the hospitality, dining and

lifestyle industry to new heights, by

opening the first outlet soon at 18 Lillian

Ngoyi (Windermere Rd), Durban.

The site was Bean Bag Bohemia (BBB),

however will now be HAI.BO, the hottest

new restaurant / bar /café in Durban.

Post the closure of BBB earlier this year, Durbanites and

regular visitors were starved of a great place to hang out

and get to know what is going on in Durban. A group of

friends and regulars to the old establishment saw this

opportunity to offer Durban something fresh whilst

being relevant and on-trend in terms of a great dining

experience and a destination venue, something that

would work anywhere. Hai.bo, the brand, was born and

will soon be offering its clientele the hottest eatery

where the cool and on-trend set hang-out.

The 1st Hai.bo store will be opening its’ doors in October

2011, with a string a very exciting events and activities

to reignite the Florida Rd strip and create a creative

precinct between Campbell Rd and St. Mary’s Avenue.

The venue is currently being renovated and upgraded to

offer 4 different areas, in which to relax and enjoy great

food, wide selection liquid refreshments, whilst enjoying

good company from 11am – till late (2am). Hai.bo will

cater to a wide mix of visitors, thereby becoming

Durban’s only truly cosmopolitan venue.

The food styling at Hai.bo will be inspired by an

Afro-Asian Fusion, whilst catering to the diverse nature

of the local clientele’s palette.

“Our fine dining area will have a classic menu with flavour

coming from the various local and Asian influence found

in KZN and SA at large stated the Hai.bo Executive chef.

Hai.Bo will be the perfect spot to meet friends, have

business meetings, whilst enjoying a great dining

experience. Hai.bo is bound to also get tongues wagging,

not only from the quirky and unique services that will be

offered, but also from the irreverent décor and design

components that are being installed.

“We look forward to yet another great space where we

will be able to entertain and proudly host our visitors to

Durban. As SA’s warmest place to be, we are excited to

have a place that will showcase our warmth via the

diversity of our people, our cultures” Commented

Tourism Durban Marketing Manager, Dumi Mbatha.

HAIKU. A decision has been made and we'll lunch

at the “renowned” HAIKU. An Asian tapas restaurant

that has an amazingly huge bamboo steamer baskets,

woks and gas burners that sound like the firing up of a

hot air balloon !

The interior is dark with low hanging lights over the

tables and it doesn't matter whether it's day or night

once you've entered, time stands still. Sit at the counter

to be part of the frenzy as the fusion chefs create poetry.

The menu is extensive, as is the wine list with some well

known labels ... now decisions have to be made !

HaikuTel : 021 424 7000 / Shop 58 Burg Street

www.haikurestaurant.com

Then some sui mai, which are little open faced dumplings,

also with a spicy prawn filling. All excellent little bits to

share !

There are a variety of steamed, stir fried dishes, spring

rolls and even Peking duck ! At the top of my list ... the

bbq duck spring rolls served with hoisan sauce !

We loved it and will be back ...

We decide on prawn toasts, some dim sum, of which we

choose har gau. These are little dumplings some filled

with spicy prawn & some with spinach and cream cheese.

Page 33: My Town Magazine - South Africa

Cape to Cuba “A slice of old Havana” is fun,

different, and apparently (I am told) authentically Cuban.

With a touch a “mad” thrown in, and behind the

unassuming façade of trinkets and art is a restaurant that

is far more than a great dining experience. It’s a

restaurant where literally everything is for sale!

Tables are adorned with over sized ornate candle holders

that complete the mismatched chairs and tables and fit

in perfectly with the tropically hued walls that give the

restaurant a splash of everything Cuban.

The combination of food quality and festive atmosphere

The fresh Cuban bread with salsa & mango fruit to start

gets you all reved up and ready to jump into your mains

which would satisfy most tastes.

The beverage list is reasonable, however, finding the

cocktail menu was delightfully sinful ...

Cape to Cuba is a well orchestrated dance considering

the tight space and Cuban confusion… In short, we'll

return and work our way through the rest of the menu.

Cape to CubaTel : 021 788 1566 / 165 Main Rd, Kalk Bay

combined with the sublime view and rattle of the table

as trains journey past more than offsets the wait for your

lunch.

GAME RESERVES

Page 40: My Town Magazine - South Africa

Pure, Distilled Africa Returns To Authentic Safari

Singita Game Reserves has launched Singita Explore, a

transformational new travel concept that will take guests

on a private mobile safari to some of Africa’s most

remote and romantic wilderness sites. The new product

has been custom designed to meet global trends, and the

demand from discerning travellers for privacy,

exclusivity and closeness to nature. Singita Explore rolled

out in East Africa earlier this year within the 340 000

acre (142 000ha) Singita Grumeti Reserves, situated

along the Western corridor of Tanzania’s legendary

Serengeti.

A completely exclusive, true ‘mobile’ camp, Singita

Explore is a unique, modern safari experience unlike

any other. Singita Explore puts the adventure back into

‘going on safari’, offering a journey of exploration on an

exclusive-use basis for between 2 and 12 guests only.

It is an ideal component of an East African safari

itinerary within the Singita Grumeti Reserves, including

stays at its three different lodges: Singita Faru Faru,

Singita Sabora Tented Camp and flagship Singita

Sasakwa, the only Relais & Châteaux property in

East Africa.

Touching the earth lightly, everything about the mobile

camp is designed for minimal energy consumption. With

little environmental impact. Guests will return from

game drives to en-suite hideaways where canvas walls

frame contemporary details infused with the durable

textures of Africa. Designed by Cécile & Boyd’s around

a theme that is modern, robust and stylish, with

wholesome furnishings that are real, utilitarian and

comfortable - in steel, leather, timber, rubber and

natural fabrics, Singita Explore removes the clutter of

everyday life with a safari that is both luxurious and

uncomplicated.

Singita’s innovative signature style and dedication to

conservation embodies the design and purpose of

Singita Explore. Luke Bailes, CEO of Singita Game

Reserves says privacy and exclusivity too are key

signatures of the Singita Explore concept. ‘With Singita

Explore we see the return of raw authenticity to days

spent in the bush, and nights under canvas in the

wilderness. Luxury is still there, but we’re doing it

differently - comfortable and detailed, with the excess

taken out, and yet, retaining the element of luxury to

offer a very beautiful safari adventure experience.

Singita Explore is back to basics, pure distilled Africa

without modern-day distractions to guarantee closeness

to wildlife and untouched landscapes.’

Page 41: My Town Magazine - South Africa

Unlike other camps, which are seasonal and semi-

permanent, Singita Explore will be disassembled and

moved to different locations in accordance to nature, its

rainfall patterns, vegetation, and game movements that

include the annual wildebeest migration - one of the

greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. The mobile safari

camp will be fully staffed with a private guide and game

viewing vehicle, chef and a camp host, with each

itinerary individually tailored according to guests’

personal interests, and preferred safari activities.

Within Singita Grumeti Reserves, Singita Explore will

also offer equestrian mobile tented safaris, providing an

opportunity for horse lovers to spend their days riding

on the open plains of the Serengeti, and the evenings

gathered around the campfire, sharing stories and

experiences. Equestrian group departures have been set

for specific dates to accommodate up to eight riders from

different parts of the world, brought together by their

love for riding and nature.

Elsewhere, the new Singita Explore brand may in future

extend into some of the other pristine wilderness

reserves where Singita holds exclusive concessions

The Volvo V60 makes its entry onto the car market with its sights firmly set on giving the all-new S60

sedan model a tough match over the title of "The Most Dynamic Volvo Model Ever".

A Coupe rather than estate car, from the design viewpoint the focus was on making the car as close to a

coupe as possible, while retaining that handy extra space at the rear. The sports wagon does not aim to

compete with the traditional estate car. The pronounced wedge shape and the slim coupe-like roof line

of the new V60 are accompanied by the shoulder profile along the car's sides, creating a gentle yet

powerful double wave from the headlamps at the front to the tail lamps at the rear. The dip in the middle

of the double wave visually pushes the car down. This enhances the stance and makes the car look sleeker

and lower. The sculpted bonnet and the short overhangs front and rear also emphasise the sports car feel.

R-Design with extra spice

The all-new Volvo V60 R-Design comes with a

range of specially developed design details both

outside and in. On the inside, the driver and front

passenger sit in sports seats in which the backrest

from the V60 is matched by an all-new seat

cushion with even closer side support than before.

Volvo Cars' chassis experts have taken the next

step on the road to a more and more exciting

driving experience. In the R-Design chassis they

have sharpened the steering, the agility and the

solid overall impression still further compared

with the dynamic chassis in the all-new V60.

Exciting styling pack

A styling pack gives the V60 buyer the opportunity

to boost the sporty attitude still further. Available

in the accessories range, the styling pack includes

skid plates front and rear, a front decor trim, side

scuff plates, special exhaust tailpipes and unique

18-inch wheels. The styling pack gives the car the

robust look inspired by the ruggedness of the XC60.

Exclusive quality inside

Volvo's designers obtained their inspiration from

the racing track as they pursued the sportiness

inside the all-new S60. The graphic character of the

racing track is clearly apparent in the instrument

panel and in the doors. Every detail looks like it's

in motion. The instruments and centre stack are

angled towards the driver to create a sensation of

focus and control. The new dynamic three-spoke

steering wheel and new sports seats with extra side

supports are standard. The rationality, simplicity,

clarity and functionality of Scandinavian design are

all prominent in the new V60

Every detail was refined during the development

process, the chassis team carved out a holistic

solution featuring changes and refinements for

virtually every single detail that influences a car's

driving properties. This includes improved steering,

stiffer springs and bushes as well as more damping

than in any previous Volvo

Always hot with a breeze, This is Curacao.

Once the Caribbeans slave post, Curacao is now a

bustling and colourful little island thats always

“Hopi Bon” ( happy ).

There is a strong Dutch influence and dont be surprised

if you are invited to a braai, as many South Africans now

call this island home.

This is not your typical island, it’s more devil thorns than

palms and the landscape is hard, rugged and it hosts a

piece of Botswana’s charm ! Maybe a jewel maybe a stone

but definitely a touch of mad to the eye ... “Ostriches”

how strange, in the Caribbean ?

From its warm crystal clear waters and scuba diving to

riding dirt bikes and Moet bubbles on the beach, Curacao

certainly is a special place.

Reflexology is an ancient art of holistic healing that

deals with the principle of ‘the zone theory”.

The Zone theory is - there are 10 zones in which all the

structures in the body are mirrored in the reflexes of the

feet, hands and ears. The reflexes of the feet, hands and

ears are stimulated using a “caterpillar walk” with

thumbs and fingers.

It’s a non invasive therapy which helps to bring about

homeostasis within the 9 body systems, correcting

imbalances, cleansing, revitalizing and facilitating

normal body functions.

The Benefits of Reflexology include : Reduced stress and

tension, changes in body physiology, stimulates defense

mechanism and healing potential Induces relaxation of

body and mind. It Gives you a feeling of well being and

restores homeostasis.

The first visit is generally a 1 hour treatment and will

include foot assessment and various relaxations and

treatment, including creaming and oiling meridians. You

will leave with a feeling of relaxation or higher energy.

Drink water after treatment to help the detoxifying.
