Canteen Question: When can I advertise that the
canteen is a healthy school canteen?
Answer: In 2012, the ACT Government Education
and Training Directorate released a revised School
Canteen Policy. The Policy is legislated, meaning
that it is mandatory that all government schools
follow it. The Policy states that “canteen operators
are encouraged to become Healthy School Canteen
Providers”, with the support of the school principal
and community. The Policy also states that in order
to become a Healthy School Canteen Provider,
foods and beverages sold need to align with the
NHSCG. Nutrition Australia can help your canteen
implement the NHSCG, by providing a menu
assessment service and ongoing nutrition advice and
support.
To find out how to become a Healthy School
Canteen Provider the canteen needs to meet the
criteria outlined in the following documents:

Canteen Question: How do I find out if the canteen
menu meets the NHSCG?
Answer: Easy! Contact us for a menu assessment/
review. The menu review process provides you with
accurate and practical information in order to create
a menu that aligns with the NHSCG. This is your first
step to becoming a Healthy School Canteen
Provider. Each food and drink item on the menu will
be categorised against the NHSCG traffic light
system. The canteen will be provided with a report
which includes practical suggestions to make items
GREENer, and tips for marketing and promotion to
assist the canteen to meet the NHSCG and maintain
a healthy profit! A nutritionist from Nutrition Australia
will visit your school and identify the facilities and
capacity of your canteen. The site visit also identifies
opportunities for point of sale promotions.
To submit your canteen menu for review, contact
Nutrition Australia by phone or email. Nutrition
Australia would like to congratulate the schools that
submitted their menus for review during 2012, and
are well on their way to creating GREENer menus.
Topic in Focus… Closing up Checklist for School Canteens
With summer holidays just around the corner, is your
canteen ready to close-up shop? This months fact
sheet is designed to help you plan for a safe and
stress-free summer closure.
This fact sheet breaks up the
tasks from two weeks to one
week before closure, and in the
final day of operation.
Remember, each school will be
different in terms of closing
procedures and requirements,
so use this fact sheet as a guide
to keeping the canteen safe over
the holidays.

Food&ME Teachers Resource
Do you know a motivated
teacher who would like to
tackle nutrition in the
classroom? Would you like
the students to better
understand the relationship between their food
choices and health?
Nutrition Australia has developed Food&ME, a
nutrition education unit specifically designed for
students in Years 5 and 6. Consisting of five
integrated modules, Food&ME addresses the
Essential Learning Achievements from the ACT cur-
riculum framework ‘Every Chance to Learn’. The five
modules provide teachers with relevant background,
nutrition information, student learning activities and
interactive PowerPoint presentations.
Teacher professional development opportunities are
also available in the ACT.

Introducing Healthy Food@School,
Phase 2 - A Whole School Program
Naomi Lee - ACT Government Health
Directorate, Health Improvement Branch
As many of you know, Healthy Food@School
commenced in 2011, with a focus on school
canteens. Nutrition Australia ACT has provided free
support to ACT school canteens on the National
Healthy School Canteen Guidelines. Over
60 schools are now taking part.
28 canteen managers and staff filled out a survey in
August this year as part of the first evaluation of
Healthy Food@School. Thank you for providing input
to help improve the program.
The main message that came through from the
survey is the need for whole school commitment.
Many of you suggested that healthy food activities in
other parts of the school would support the healthy
menu changes in the canteen.
Lack of understanding from the wider school
community is a main barrier to canteen profitability
when changing to GREENer menus.
As a result of your feedback, as well as consultation
and research, Phase 2 of Healthy Food@School will
launch in 2013 as a whole school program. The aim
will be to involve students, teachers, school
executive and parents and carers.
In 2013, fifteen schools will participate in a pilot of
Phase 2. Healthy Food@School will continue until
2016 with an additional 15 schools being recruited in
each year, impacting on a total of 60 schools.
Each active school will sign a three year agreement.
Schools will be given a choice of nine modules to
work on. The modules are:
Garden to Table
Classroom Learning
Food for Sale@School
Healthy Food@School Policy
Food From Home
Healthier Work
Marketing Healthy Food
Fundraising and Rewards
Breakfast, After School Care, Veg and Fruit
Breaks
Module 3 is Food for Sale@School, which is the
canteen support provided by Nutrition Australia. This
support will continue and Nutrition Australia will keep
providing training, networking opportunities, menu
reviews and consultation support to all canteens. The
hope is that more activity and learning in all the other
parts of school life will connect with the great work
that canteens are already doing.
If you have any questions about Phase 2, or think
your school would like to be a pilot school, please
contact Naomi Lee:
