CHRISTMAS SNAPSHOTS

If there was one area which was soaking in the Christmas spirit early as the clock moved to the midnight hour on December 24 it was the San Thome

Cathedral zone.Even as the rush hour

traffic slowly dipped after 9 p.m., church-goers were filling the seats for the open-air Christmas- eve Mass at

the cathedral campus. It has rained earlier in the day and the weather looked iffy but the cathedral priests decided to go ahead with the special Mass in the open.

The English Mass started at 9.30 p.m. with the choir singing carols and hymns. A shade after 11 p.m., the Thamizh Mass began and here, the main celebrant was archbishop Rev. Dr. George Antonysamy who gave his Christmas mes-sage during the sermon. He later cut a giant cake and pieces of the cake were shared with the congregation.

By then, people dressed in Santa caps were into the festival mode: they greeted friends on the church campus and some quickly

headed home for fellowship.Other churches down the

main road – CSI St. Thomas English Church and CSI St. Thomas Tamil Church – were fully illuminated and Christmas services were held here.

Further down, youth had got a lovely crib readied on

the church campus stage at Our Lady of Guidance Church on Lazarus Church Road as people streamed in for the night Mass here. And a giant illumination of a Christmas tree caught the eye at Our Lady of the Visitation Church on St. Mary’s Road.

To educate students on Solid Waste Management (SWM), Chennai Corpora-tion has planned to introduce a new sub-ject called ‘Trashonomics’ at its schools.

Chennai-based CityWorks has collaborated with the civic body to implement the project on a pilot basis at three Corporation schools in Mylapore.

The schools are Chennai High School at Sringeri Mutt Road, Chennai High School at Veera Perumal Kovil Street and Chennai Middle School at Mundagakanni Amman Kovil Street. Kavitha Selvaraj of the CityWorks has translated the ‘Trashonomics’ book to Tamil.

The syllabus, that has five sections titled – problems, solutions, recyclable, and non-recyclable waste and reduce

waste is covered in four sessions.Says J.Dhanammal, the headmis-

tress of the school at Sringeri Mutt Road near Mandaveli MRTS station, “The students will also have practical sessions where they will be trained in composting biodegradable waste generated at their school,” and adds that they are actively involving themselves in the composting process.

A composting unit has also been set at the school’s premises. “The class 9 stu-dents have taken charge to carry out the process,” says the headmistress.

Uma Maheshwari of the NGO, Karam Korporm is one of the volunteers who takes sessions on SWM and guides students on composting. She says that the students were already well aware of the various kinds of waste. “They just need guidance on means of disposing it responsibly.”

Says Shagul Basha, a class 9 student at this school, “Every day, we collect dry leaves, the food-waste from the mid-day meal, and biodegradable waste that some teachers bring from their houses, and drop it inside the composter. In all, we feed around 2 kilos of waste into the composter daily. Then, to enhance the process, we add a powder that induces microbe generation.”

The compost generated will be given to the local units of Chennai Corpora-tion, says Dhanammal.

From Jan.1., the civic body plans to extend this to 50 city schools. Writes Kavitha Selvaraj in a Facebook post, “Volunteers with basic knowledge in SWM can help us teach at these schools.” People who wish to volunteer may write to [email protected].

Participants at the fifth edition of Thinnai Talkies were in for a pleas-ant surprise when they were offered ice-candies before watching a docu-mentary. The candies were arranged in various flavours – avocado, tender coconut, and strawberry.

Said Vignesh Arulingam, volun-teer of Thinnai Talkies, “In every edi-tion, we introduce a new concept to enhance the documentary watching experience. In this case to make peo-ple feel they were part of the film we gave them ice candies with a flavour similar to the story’s theme.”

The event was held last Friday at Studio A in P.S.Sivaswamy Road in Mylapore.

Thinnai Talkies is a monthly initiative by SPI Edge, Chennai to get people to have conversations on various aspects of a movie/documen-tary. “It is a platform to appreciate, debate and have a dialogue to under-stand the essence of the documentary that was just showcased,” he says.

The team focuses on screening documentaries as they believe like movies, documentaries too can lead to a positive change in society.

At every edition, the director of the documentary, and a group of

panel members are invited to take the idea of the movie forward. The discussions are called ‘tent kotta’ as the audience are seated close to each other on the ground similar to the olden days.

Explaining how the name Thin-nai (a platform or verandah found in traditional South Indian houses) came to be, Vignesh says, “In those days, ‘Thinnai’ used to be a place where conversations took place and new ideas were generated. We wanted to create a similar ‘transition zone’ connecting different people.”

The screenings of seven documen-taries produced by Mumbai based Memesys Culture lab took place in the evening.

It included six VR documenta-ries and the political documentary ‘An Insignificant Man’ directed by Khushboo Ranka and Vinay Shukla. Considered the largest crowd-funded documentary it is based on the for-mation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Thinnai Talkies plans to have its screenings regularly at Studio A in the following months. To know more about their upcoming documentary screenings follow their Instagram Page – Thinnai Talkies.

Rush Madras, Chennai’s first sports facility for neon cricket has recently opened at R.A.Puram.

Neon Cricket involves playing cricket in the dark with glowing elements. Adithya, the founder of 22Yards, a cricket-based application for sportspersons, has conceptualized the sport.

Says Allan Jose, Business Devel-opment Executive at Rush Madras, “The idea struck us in a radio show while we were discussing the Neon Run Marathon that happens in India. Later, after some research, we applied the same to cricket.”

Glowing stumps, ball, sportswear and bat coated with fluorescent green and orange colors are the only means of light in the indoor sports facility during a game of neon cricket.

Allan says that this will allow a player to focus better. “As the batsman will be able to see nothing except the ball and the other player’s top clothing, he will be able to focus better on the game,” he says.

“Often, players get affected by the glare of the artificial lights around an open ground. Here as we eliminate all forms of light, such a problem will not occur,” he says.

The game seems to have become popular among the Corporates. “We have got a number of bookings from Corporate people. As neon cricket happens after 6 p.m., it is conveni-ent for them to play after their work hours.”

However, he says as the pitch is only 14 yards, it will not be suitable for professional players. The sport-ing arena also has the infrastruc-ture for playing basketball, tennis, and badminton. A maximum of 12 players are allowed for neon cricket. It is priced at Rs 2500 per hour on weekdays and Rs.3000 per hour on weekends. For bookings contact 22Yards at 9789832541.

CK’s bakery chain that is a unit of CavinKare has opened its new outlet at Kamarajar Salai in R.A.Puram near the Apollo pharmacy.

Situated in a small nook, the shop offers a range of cakes, and snacks (sandwiches, puff, samo-sas, and rolls).

While Chocotruffle and pink velvet (topped with rose petals) top the cake menu, their grilled

They are also offering special plum cakes (in various measures) for Christmas. A 250 g plum cake is priced at Rs.150. At 73/75, Kamarajar Salai, R.A.Puram. Ph: 7823914363/ 9629943192.Photo: Swiggy.com

MYLAPORE TIMES Dec 28, 2019 - Jan 3, 202014

V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A

I woke up to images of Kuswar on Christmas eve.Evergreen carols were playing on my MacBook and

online greetings were slipping into my e-mail box. But the images of Kuswar remained and I knew I was being nostalgic.

Kuswar is the set of goodies that were/are tradi-tionally made at home in Goa and in Mangalore for Christmastime.

Nevriyos, rose cookies, kidiyos (kul-kuls), chakklis, cakes . . . They say the Kuswar tradition traces to the social heritage of Goan Catholics and much of the goodies are very Indian.

Days before Christmas, families get together in the kitchen to make these goodies, night after night.

Making the kidiyos (kul-kuls) is easy, as a team. But the nevriyos (sweet puffs) take time - the desic-cated dry coconut is prepared in advance, then mixed with kish-mish ( raisins), sesame seeds, cashew bits and sugar/jaggery, packed into the puris of maida dough: the stuffed puris are folded, sealed and fried in oil. Delicious foodstuff indeed.

Kuswars are shared with neighbours and relatives: making the goodies gets the family around the stoves - to cook and converse and sing carols.

Today, that tradition is bypassed by ‘busy’ families and Kuswars are ordered at stores. But there are still folks who make at least the kulkuls and bake a cake.

I was at the San Thome Cathedral for Christmas Mass close to midnight. Once the Mass was over, on a whim we drove off to the other side of town - to St. Thomas Mount.

I have not been in that Cantonment area of the city for a long time and I was just curious to find out what it looked like at Christmas time.

Just off Butt Road, at the base of the hill where the steps lead to its top, a small market had come up - hawkers had set up stalls and sold popcorn and snacks, candles and Santa caps, sweet-meats and bangles. Two bakeries were still open and doing great business at the midnight hour.

There are two churches in this area. The CSI church was fully illuminated for the Christmas service.

And St Patrick’s Church next door, whose history goes back to some 300 years was bursting with people attending midnight Mass.

Young men on bikes raced elsewhere though - to the top of the hill shrine of saint Thomas, where the Portuguese-era church/shrine remembers the saint’s death.

There were hundreds of cars and bikes in two parking lots. A priest thundered at sermon time as planes took off or landed at the airport beyond.

Young couples and groups of young men and women just hung around and chatted, oblivious to the Christmas service that was going on here.

The church was bathed in illumination as was the rest of the top area of the hill. And all around below, the city had gone past the midnight hour and fallen asleep.

We did not stay on long at the hill-top. I had expected a quiet Christmas service of prayer and carols. This one was loud and there was chatter all around.

Our places of prayer and meditation are loud today.

Jeth Nagar residents encourage good waste disposal practices

On Christmas day, Jeth Nagar Residents Association (JERA) honored 10 house maids in the colony with a surprise cash award of Rs. 500 for practicing waste segregation in their homes.

The day was called SEG-MENTORS Day - the local area residents had mentored the waste segregation process through their maids and sent photos of acts of segregated waste and the best efforts were recognised.

JERA intends to do this once in two months to motivate the residents.

Sham about LPG facility ‘inspection’ fee

We have been served with a bill for Rs.200 by our lo-cal Indane distributor towards Inspection Charges. This has become an annual feature. Last year, the amount was Rs.150 plus GST. The bill is presented by the delivery man and the amount collected.

No “inspection” of the gas connection is carried out by him. Moreover, he is not equipped to do this job. While there is no second opinion about the neces-sity for carrying out checking of the gas connection periodically as a safety measure, the dis-tributor should depute a qualified technician who will thoroughly inspect, point out deficiencies, if any, and suggest remedial measures. This will alone can justify collection of ‘Inspection charges’.

Appreciation for Bharatiya Vidya BhavanBharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s cultural festival 2019 is being conducted in a grand manner this

year as it always is. The response of rasikas response is overwhelming and often, when popular artistes performed there was not even an inch of space in the hall inside and upstairs, in the gallery.

But the Bhavan’s Chennai kendra director Ramaswamy never likes to see rasikas standing and listening to concerts. He takes personal inter-est and gives directions to the volunteers to find seats for people. At times, if the seats are free in the front rows which are occupied by special guests, Ramaswamy would ask rasikas to occupy them.

We rasikas wish him the best and that he has good health to continue his service to BVB and to us rasikas.

Section of road has caved in: online plaints not addressed

A section of the main road seems to have caved in at the intersection of St. Mary’s Road and C. P. Ramas-wamy Road and this issue has been unattended for some 3 months.

The traffic signal system here is also not working properly and there is no traffic policeman posted here and this leads to terrific congestion.

Two complaints were already raised on the Namma Chennai App but there has not been any response.

Potholed roadsMany streets and roads in the Mylapore area are

potholed after the recent rains. Here are two bad cases. The first one is in R. K. Mutt

Road, the section near the Luz Circle junction near the Bata showroom.

The second one is at the Sri Mundagakanni Amman Koil Street junction connecting Nattu Subbarayan Street, near MedPlus store. These pose a danger for drivers, especially two-wheelers.

Though many potholes have been patched up on Sri Mundagakanni Amman Koil Street, one section remains to be filled up.

Private construction creates dust pollution, affects residents

The residents of our area are facing a problem of fine dust pollution due to the construction of a residential building that is coming up at No.5, Arunachalam Street, Jeth Nagar, Mandaveli .

The existing structure was demolished some months ago without any dust barrier put in place submerging the house next door under clouds of dust. After strong protests to the owner, a make-shift cloth barrier was put up after the building was demolished. But this soon got torn and the gaping holes therein allows for the dust pollution problem to continue.

More recently, even this fig leaf of a cover was removed by the builder and the grinding of concrete walls was carried out, throwing fine dust into the kitchen / bedroom next door.

We request the owner of this property and the builder to show greater concern for those living nearby and take steps to erect a good, metal sheet dust barrier.

Representatives of Mylapore based Narasim-hapuram Residents Association (NRA) recently talked to Mylapore MLA R. Nataraj for help in addressing civic issues and support for develop-ment initiatives in the colony including drilling rain water harvesting (RWH) pits in the colony roads to prevent the water logging that happens during the rainy season.

The MLA agreed to sponsor two of the five planned RWH pits in the colony (out of the MLA fund) and work was immediately initiated. Four pits have now been installed with one more to be com-pleted soon.

This past Sunday (Dec.22), the MLA was the chief guest at the inauguration of the colony’s entrance gate held that morning. At the meet, he promised to sponsor the installation of one CCTV which is the next security initiative of the associa-tion. He also stressed on the need for a collaborative approach to develop sustainable and eco friendly societies.

Narasimhapuram, a quaint residential colony sandwiched between Marwadi Thottam and Visalakshi Thottam and comprising 65 residences is celebrating its golden jubilee this year.

To mark this, an all women’s team took over the mantle of the Narasimhapuram Residents Association (NRA) in April 2019. Since then, the all women’s team has been involved in a slew of initia-tives aimed at the betterment of the colony and in making it a secure and self sustained society. 24/7 security services, a security cabin for the guards and an entrance gate to the colony were installed with sponsorships from the residents of the colony.

Recharge wells are being constructed along the service road in Marina.

Every time it rains, a section of this road behind Gandhi statue gets flooded. To avoid this, the Chennai Corporation has sunk 5 ft deep recharge wells at six locations here.

Says a Corporation official attached to zone 9, “The recharge wells are laid as a temporary measure to avoid water stagna-tion. However, during heavy rains, the wells will not be able to take much water. We will have to suck it out through a motor.”

Earlier, the civic body dug the sandy area adjoining the road to construct recharge pits. But as cables were passing through the pits, he says, they had to stop using it.

“We are working to get a permanent solution for this issue,” he says.

Margazhi, Hanumanth jayanthi, Sri Ayyappa-swami celebrations . . . all these and the rest provide for people to host music concerts and these are happening across Mylapore. The Panchamugha Anjaneya Aradhana Trust is hosting music concerts at a hall in the Chitrakulam area and some top-notch artistes like Prof. T. N. Krishnan are listed to perform here in the evenings, with early afternoon slots meant for junior artistes. Photo here shows the Thirumylai Sisters in concert on Dec.25.
