MIDDLE SCHOOL TIMES-COMMUNICATION HELPS BUILD COMMUNITY

One of the fundamental concepts of the MYP is holistic learning.

MYP CORNER One of the fundamental concepts of the MYP is holistic learning. This means that we do not learn knowledge in separate subject areas but across the whole curriculum. It also means that we are not solely interested in academic learning. There are many ways in which we at MIS have experienced holistic learning. In academic terms that includes the creation of interdisciplinary units. These are units where two or more subjects will prepare students to create a product. So far Math and Science; English and Technology; Spanish and Humanities have all worked together. This very publication is the result of students working with skills being developed in both Spanish and Humanities. Profits from its sale will go to support the Fundación Defensores de la Naturaleza and World Wildlife Foundation nature focused non-profits to demonstrate that they are caring global citizens. In addition, one unit was designed to help the school community during the book fair.

The Expedition School Sometimes we need to work extra hard to get a group of students to work together. Without good communication between any group, problems can arise and work does not progress efficiently. To show our group of six graders the importance of talking to each other, we recently visited The Expedition School. It was fun field trip where through play, communication-building games and reflection, students and teachers bonded in a fun and creative way.

Students also made videos recommending books for children in Kinder, 1

st and 2

nd grades. These will be

published on the Monday of the book fair in order to help the school raise funds. During that week 6

th grade will be

involved in the fair by using barcode scanners to check out individuals buying books. This form of community service is central to the philosophy of the MYP and is fantastic to see. Sixth grade students have shown themselves to be leaders in the community. They arranged and led the Peace Day Assembly and two performed a song in Mandarin. Four members of the group formed a band and sang for the rest of the school during the Halloween celebration. Other students are highly involved with the school garden which is now looking green and beginning to give fruit. It is wonderful to see young people so involved in the life of their community. Long may it continue?

Yo vine a Austin para mejorar el Ingles y para aprender de la cultura. Yo vine a Magellan para hacer amigos y me pareció muy divertido. También ha sido muy interesante visitar la Universidad de Texas. El primer día que estuve en UT me pareció muy raro Austin pero después me fui acostumbrando. Para venir al colegio tengo que atravesar toda la ciudad desde el sureste hasta el norte. ¡Pero vale la pena! Sebastián Márquez Grado 6

Español Sebastián Márquez es un estudiante comprometido, responsable y muy educado. Vino a Austin desde Guatemala por sus vacaciones y le encanto sexto grado. Es un modelo en el uso del español y ha contribuido en clase de español compartiendo su cultura, anécdotas, experiencias y el trabajo que hace su papá en Peten, Guatemala. La semana pasada Sebastián hizo una presentación sobre el monitoreo de jaguares en Petén, Guatemala. Su papá es director de la Fundación Defensores de la naturaleza y realizan un trabajo maravilloso para proteger esta especie. Para ver su presentación visite el código QR.

Ingles Sebastián Márquez is a committed, responsible and respectful student. He came to Austin from Guatemala for vacation, visited our school, and liked sixth grade. He is a language modeler in Spanish and has contributed to our Spanish class by sharing his culture, personal anecdotes, experiences, and the work his dad does in Petén, Guatemala. Last week Sebastian delivered a presentation on how jaguars are monitored in Petén. His dad is the director of the Fundación Defensores de la Naturaleza non-profit and does a wonderful job to protect this species. To watch his presentation scan the QR code on this page.

Inmigrante de padres taiwaneses

En nuestra escuela hay padres de diferentes partes del mundo. Entreviste a un padre de Magallanes llamado Eric Tang. Eric Tang es de Queens, Nueva York y nació en 1974. Sus padres nacieron en Taiwan y emigraron a los Estados Unidos en 1968 cuando tenían 25 y 26 años. Emigraron por la terrible economía y también para experimentar algo nuevo. Otra razón por la que emigraron de Taiwan fue por que en ese año 1965, Estados Unidos pasó nuevas leyes que abrieron las puertas a emigrantes Asiáticos. Esta ley termino durante el mismo año (1965). Cuando los padres de Eric se mudaron de Taiwan a Estados Unidos, no sabían mucho Ingles pero sabían suficiente Ingles para superar el cambio Cuando sus padres decidieron mudarse a los Estados Unidos se sintieron confiados y a la vez asustados. Los padres de Eric Tang se mudaron a los Estados Unidos y fueron patrocinados por sus trabajos. Se hospedaron en un hospital en unos dormitorios. A pesar de estar tan lejos, Eric dice que el sigue preparando y comiendo comida China original. A él le gustaría irse a vivir a China y

Volunteer visited our 6th grade class to recruit

our students for CAS hours.

MIS is holding our first school year Book Fair by Scholastic. An active group of parents have been working in making this possible. Jeanine Adinaro, MIS parent and Book Fair committee volunteer came to our grade 6 class to share about our coming fair and recruit some of our students to help while obtaining CAS hours (service). Grade 6 Students decided to interview Jeanine and get more information about our Book Fair. Interview by Grade 6 students

English Interview When does the book fair start and when does it end? It starts Monday, November the 18

th and it ends Friday,

November 22nd

Where does all the money from the sale of the books go? Most of the money goes to Scholastic. We get 50% if use the money to buy books from Scholastic directly or 25% if we want cash to buy books somewhere else. Does the school earn as much as they pays to get Scholastic? We don’t have to pay to get the book fair in our school. We just get credit towards books with Scholastic or a check to buy books elsewhere. Why do we do the book fair? To raise money for the school to buy things we need. What are you doing to help the book fair? Talking to us and helping set up at Anderson Lane and Chimney Corners. Who are the people who help organize the fair? There are a lot of moms and dads who help. They make a list of how to organize the book fair and then they assign what they need to do themselves. For example; deliver the books to the fair and help the school so that it is ready so that the book fair can start and end. However, Scholastic travels from afar to deliver the books to the school. The moms and dads only help the school get organized and prepare the event.

Empieza el 18 de noviembre que es un lunes, y termina el 22 de noviembre que es un viernes. ¿A dónde va todo el dinero de los libros? El corazón del dinero de la feria de libros va a Scholastic. Puede ser un 50% si tomamos crédito de Scholastic o 25% si queremos el dinero para comprar libros en otra compañía. ¿El colegio gana igual que lo que le paga a Scholastic? No tenemos que pagar para traer la feria al colegio, solo pedimos crédito o cheque. ¿Por qué se hace feria de libros en MIS? Creativity is interpreted

Action can include not only

participation in individual and team sports but also taking part in expeditions and in local or international projects.

Service encompasses a host of

“CRAYON RESIST”……1

Fourth and Sixth Grade “Crayon Resist”

A different emphasis… A matter of perspective. Using a string, students composed at least five different shapes and traced them out with a pencil. The shapes could not touch each other. Students had to pay attention to the shapes and the spaces between the shapes. Then, using crayon, they began to make designs inside the shapes. Grade 6 and Grade 4 students left a lot of space around their designs because then they painted around them with watercolor. The watercolor does not stick to the crayon because crayons are made of wax and water and wax resist each other. In art this technique is called "crayon resist". This is the cold wax version of Batik. Students were free to use any colors they liked as long as they felt the designs would stand out from the background. Dan Kaplan – Magellan’s Art Teacher

Sacred Wolves is an American rock/pop band formed by Mateo Bolivar (lead guitarist), Sagan McCain (lead vocalist), Benjamin Johnson (vocalist), and Simón Calderón (drummer/vocalist)

This year we are proud to showcase this talented group of students who presented at our recent

Harvest Festival. They performed English rock and pop songs. Their music accompanied and

entertained students while others got their face and hair painted in the library.

Tiempo Libre !A divertirnos!

Mi película preferida del 2013 es El Glotón. ¡Película estadounidense! Si te gustan las películas de acción, te recomiendo mucho esta película. ¡Tiene la mejor acción del mundo! El Glotón es un personaje de estudios MARVEL que nació con un poder magnifico. Salió en la película de estudios MARVEL, X-Men. Se trata de la evolución de los humanos que son mutantes. Hay unos mutantes buenos y otros malos. Durante la película El Glotón y una niña mutante, Rogue, encuentran una escuela de mutantes que tiene un maestro que se llama Profesor X. El, entrena a los mutantes para que pueden destruir a el mutante malo, Magneto. Esta película de El Glotón es sobre las aventuras de El Glotón en Japón. La película siguiente es X-Men 3. El Glotón es una película muy buena porque tiene acción con espadas, pistolas, trucos y garras de metal. El poder de El Glotón esta en sus garras de metal y su poder de curación rápida. También hay mutantes malos como una mujer de serpiente. Los japoneses quieren encontrar a una mujer que se llama Mariko, entonces le toca a El Glotón protegerla a ella, pero después encuentra la verdad de lo que quieren. El Glotón se vuelve débil porque una mujer de serpiente pone veneno adentro de él y después se da cuenta que no tiene curación rápido. Hay una parte de acción impresionante cuando los japoneses construyen un robot de metal adamantium como las garras de El Glotón. Después de que la veas, te vas a sentir como ¡W0W! que película tan impresionante. ¿Crees que El Glotón no tiene curación? . Chiles Rellenos Para una familia de 5

Ingredientes: 5 chiles poblanos

1 queso fresco 4 huevos

2 cucharadas de harina de maíz Aceite suficiente

1-Primero lavas los chiles 2-Los pones a azar para que se suden 3-Dejalos reposar 4-Quita la piel de los chiles y sácales las semillas 5-Ralla el queso y rellena los chiles y ciérralos con un palillo de dientes 6-Pasa los chiles ya rellenos por la harina de maíz 7-Bate las claras de los huevos hasta que esponje y después agrega las yemas y sigue batiendo hasta que se integre todo 8-Calienta el aceite en una sartén 9-Pasa los chiles por el huevo y después ponlos a freír en el aceite hasta que el huevo este de un color dorado. 10-Sirva con arroz y bañe los chiles con la salsa de tomate Para la salsa que va con los chiles rellenos:

Y la otra mezcla siguiendo el orden. 7-Cuando nos comunicamos es más fácil organizar algo y preparar algo en menos tiempo. 8-Ademas al preparar una receta en compañía mejoras la relación con la/las otra/s persona/s y compartes un momento especial. 9-Finalmente cuando terminen de preparar la receta, la pueden compartir y disfrutar con amigos. 10-A celebrar y disfrutar juntos cuando nos comunicamos. DIWALI in San Antonio, Texas Diwali, also called Divali or the "festival of

lights", is a five-day Hindu festival which starts

on Dhanteras, celebrated on the thirteenth

lunar day of Krishna Paksha of the Hindu

calendar month Ashvin and ends on Bhau-beej,

celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla

Paksha of the month Kartik. Dhanteras usually

falls eighteen days after Dussehra. In the

Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls between mid-

October and mid-November.

Diwali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri

Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad

and Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore

and Fiji.

For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important

inspired outfits and practiced dances. Belonging to an international school is a wonderful experience. Our diverse staff is promotes cultural awareness and understands that cultural differences exist and that we all need to be sensitive and respect these differences when interacting with people whose customs or world view may be different from our own. At MIS we examine the values, beliefs, traditions, and perceptions within our own culture and that of others. Si eres un fanático de Newcastle United une tus manos y aplaude por el jugador Loic Remy, jugador de Francia que hizo el único gol quien hizo ganar a su equipo. El juego quedo 1-0. El miércoles 13 de noviembre a las 2:30 de la tarde chocaron 2 equipos (México vs Nueva Zelanda) que definieron quien va al mundial Brasil 2014.

Estos equipos pelearon por el último boleto para llegar al mundial. El tri con su nuevo técnico Miguel Ángel, mejor conocido como "el piojo herrera”, llevará a México al mundial según lo que dice la Federación Mexicana de Fútbol. Nueva Zelanda con su técnico Ricki Herbert , también tienen ganas de ganar. Para la selección mexicana no ha sido el mejor mundial que han tenido. México viene con la victoria ante Panamá, con la chilena que hizo Raúl Jiménez. Este gol los llevo a tener las esperanzas de clasificar al mundial. Los fanáticos dicen que el partido estuvo muy reñido por la capacidad y la profesionalidad de los dos equipos. ¿Quién gano? Gano el mejor.

The Magellan Volleyball team did an awesome job their first year. We had lots of fun and learned the basics of playing volleyball. We worked on a lot of passing, serving, and rules of the game. Everyone worked hard at every practice and game and the hard work paid off with 2 wins at the end of the season. We improved individually and as a team, I am very proud of everyone that participated and the amount of support that they received from parents and staff. El próximo verano del 2014 se organiza el mundial de fútbol numero 19. Desde 1930 se han organizado mundiales de fútbol excepto en los años 1942 y 1946 a causa de la segunda guerra mundial. Este año el país escogido es Brasil y las ciudades donde se van a jugar los partidos son Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia y Sao Paulo. Los equipos que participan son profesionales de más de 208 asociaciones de la FIFA en el mundo. Los equipos clasificados hasta ahora son:

La comunicación ha empezado a ser

más importante en los últimos años.

Eso es porque inventaron ‘world

wide web’ que hizo que se

inventaran otras maneras de

comunicarse por internet. El

navegador actual se llama Masaic.

Hay otro navegador que es Google

que es más rápido y puede hacer

mas cosas. Las personas pueden

usar Google para crear

presentaciones y compartirlas con

el mundo.

Hay muchos ejemplos de como ha

evolucionado la comunicación, pero

estos son unos ejemplos de la

evolución de la comunicación que

son interesantes e innovadores.

¿Quiénes intervinieron? En la historia de

la evolución de la comunicación en los

últimos treinta años han intervenido

muchas personas importantes y genios.

¿Quiénes fueron esos genios de los que

hoy se hablan?

Muchos vienen de diferentes partes del

mundo. Algunas de estas personas fueron

algo alocadas como; Steve Jobs, Samuel

Morse (quien invento el código morse

aunque no en las últimos treinta años) y

Tim Burners-Lee.

¿Cómo sucedió? Las personas están avanzando en la tecnología todos los días. Científicos inventan nuevos tipos de comunicación con tecnología. La tecnología esta avanzando y evolucionando a pasos agigantados con los humanos. Por ejemplo: el teléfono comenzó como un gran invento que estaba solo en casa. Este teléfono era difícil para llamar a las personas por que no todos tenían uno. Ahora casi todos tienen un teléfono móvil o de casa, entonces puedes llamar a todas las personas.

¿Por qué ocurrió? Los avances tecnológicos han ocurrido porque los humanos han evolucionado y el número de humanos esta creciendo. Esto significa que necesitamos mejorar más la comunicación. Si necesitamos comunicación, necesitamos tecnología para ayudarnos. La tecnología nos ayuda para que nos comuniquemos desde distancias muy lejanas. También para que no tome mucho tiempo mandar mensajes. Un ejemplo claro es cuando una persona necesita ayuda y puedes llamar a el policía muy rápido. ¿Dónde ocurrió? La tecnología ha evolucionado en muchos lugares del mundo. La tabla de abajo nos muestra como, cuando y donde ocurrieron algunos avances importantes en la tecnología.

During the last few weeks students have been working in their Spanish and Humanities classes on the Middle School Times Newspaper. The idea underlying the paper is that students demonstrate their knowledge about concepts explored during the trimester through a mass means of communication. To accomplish this, students had to investigate, collect information from various sources, analyze distinct events, and synthesize their research in an understandable way. The objective was to deliver a final product where they would demonstrate their understanding of what was covered in both courses in their first unit of inquiry of the year. One of the last activities of this project was a guided visit to the construction site of the new wing of the Anderson Lane campus. The visit proved to be very interesting for the students and they collected information from the construction team using a questionnaire that was developed using a framework created in their Spanish class. After obtaining the answers to their questions, the students put together individual reports using this information as well as with audiovisual content collected during the visit.

and we met with the boss. He gave

us a tour around the construction

and explained how it all worked. He

also taught us about a laser tool.

to interview the boss at the

information and facts about all the

happenings in the Magellan

community and what could be

time, but we never could go to see.

had the pleasure to go to the

“When we arrived at the

construction site we saw some

workers with sandpaper working at

the entrance wall of the “school of

the future”. We went to talk directly

with Mr. Dennis Bowman, the

construction boss. He told us that

there were twelve workers at the

construction site every day from

6:00 am to 8:00 pm. While he was

showing us the construction we saw

some workers applying a grey paste

on the wall. Simon asked, “what are

they doing?” The boss explained

that the paste was to soften the

us a tool that I did not know about.

the required level to build in an

Malasia ¡Te encantara visitar este país! Si tienes oportunidad de tener unas vacaciones largas y no sabes donde ir a visitar, te recomiendo que viajes a Malasia. ¡Te encantara visitar este país! Te prometo que es absolutamente fenomenal. ¡Estar ahí, es un milagro! Pero está en el otro lado del mundo, y si no te gusta viajar en vuelos muy largos, la línea aérea te provee de todas las cosas que necesitas para que viajes muy cómodamente. Hay apartamentos, parques, muchos lugares para caminar, bosques, centros comerciales magníficos, animales que nunca has imaginado, frutas que no puedes encontrar en Estados Unidos y mucho, mucho más.

También estarías en un continente nuevo que es 100% extraordinario. Estarías cerca de otros países como China, Tailandia, Australia, India y Singapur. En China abrieron un Nuevo Disney Land. En Singapur hay muchos parques de agua y Estudios Universal. En Malasia hay hasta un Lego Land. Creo que terminaron el nuevo hotel de Lego, también. Cuando

Junglas, animales y templos en Tailandia Te gusta despertar en la mañana con el murmullo de monos y la canción de pájaros con colores exóticos y raros. Cuando te estés poniendo la ropa puedes escuchar el ruido de los Moks en el templo cerca. Puedes tomar tu taza de te Tailandés. Este es el país para ti. Con sus playas con agua de color agua marina, templos antiguos, junglas verdes y animales de diferentes clases. Tailandia, su nombre oficial es Kingdom de Tailandia. Su bandera d colores rojo, azul y blanco, y su emblema nacional es Gruda o Krut en tai , de religión Hindú krutque significa medio hombre, media pájaro. Dicen que Krut es el vehículo de Vishnu, el rey de Tailandia. En tiempos antiguos era llamado rama, y vishnu es el rey de todos los dioses en la religión Hindú. Desde Entonces el emblema de Tailandia ha sido Krut. Las regiones de Tailandia son Theravada o Hinayana Buddhism donde estan todos los templos y estatuas de Buddah antiguo.

The Holidays are just around the corner whether you like it or not. Generally, people begin to feel a sense of urgency and

stress during these times. For tweens and teens, they are also experiencing a good deal of pressure from school and

extracurricular activities. When tweens and teens get overwhelmed, they need resilience! (Note: Parents, take heed to this as

well. Building a resilient family is paramount to positive relationships and good mental health, and it all starts with YOU!) The

definition of resilience is the process of bouncing back and getting stronger, learning from mistakes & building a foundation

for dealing with future bumps in the road. It’s not just about how well you can handle the tough stuff; it’s also about what

you learn from the experience.

Here are four dimensions of resilience that you can use to get through the tough times and set yourself up for success along

the way:

SELF-CARE: Eat well; sleep well, drink lots of water. Set SMART goals. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely)

Practice good study habits.

CONNECTION: Reach out to your peers, your family, your teachers and mentors. Remember that you're not alone, and

everyone has gone through times of stress. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

RECOVERY: Take time to recharge. Set aside break time when you need it and keep a list of things you can do to unwind. Ride

a bike, take a walk, call a friend, listen to your favorite song, write in your journal, or make a snack. The possibilities are

endless and as unique as you!

SPIRIT: Be kind to yourself. Be forgiving when you make a mistake. Remember to use positive self-talk to lift your spirits and

keep yourself motivated. Catch yourself when you hear that nagging voice in your head telling you you're not good enough,

smart enough, or talented enough. Then, create your own mantras and positive words that keep you going!

Try this Mantra*: “I will survive, I will thrive!”

Practice saying this phrase and/or other positive thoughts out loud or in your head as a reminder that you have the tools

you need to be resilient and you will not only get through the challenges, you will come out stronger!

*A mantra is a Sanskrit term for a group of words that is considered capable of “creating transformation.”

Resilience 101 Social and Emotional Learning

I love the word wallow. It’s fun to say, plus it reminds me of two totally separate things: self-pity, and pigs in mud. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard the phrase used without one of those two things attached!

Except, I often use the phrase at work in a way that is counter to its usual definition and negative connotation.

Something that we parents don’t generally do often or well is to connect with our children when they are having upset or uncomfortable emotions. Instead, we try to distract or minimize or rationalize or joke or extinguish those emotions. We do it for many different reasons, perhaps because the expression is ill-timed or inappropriate in size, or because their upset is about us and we feel defensive, or because it’s about something we can’t control and we feel helpless. But for whatever reason, we often entirely skip the step where we reflect and validate our children’s emotions. Emotionally healthy parenting requires that we give our children permission to feel their feelings, even tough feelings. Furthermore, our children need to feel connected to us even when they are feeling angry or resentful or worried or freaked out. (*)

So I use the word wallow. I don’t actually want parents to wallow in their children’s emotional states, but because we tend to err on the side of minimizing those emotions, I use a word that guides us towards the other side of the continuum.

When your child is upset or angry or worried, take a deep breath. Mentally remind yourself that you want them to know that they have your permission to feel those feelings. (This will help them internalize, for life, the important lesson that they have a right to their feelings.) Reflect to your child that you see how they are feeling. That can be done simply by saying something like: “wow, I can tell you are really feeling ___ .” Take it a step further (and borrow a page from Imago couples therapists) and validate their feelings: “It makes sense to me that you would feel upset about that. If I were in your position, I’d probably feel the same way.”

And then maybe take another deep breath. Let a little space come in to the room and in to your interaction. This is where the ‘wallowing’ happens. Just stay in that space for a moment: stay in the space of having given your child permission to feel those feelings. Let your child soak that in. Don’t rush too quickly to distract or redirect. Offering a hug, caring eye contact, or a loving touch might feel good to them right now. This all serves to help them feel less agitated, less out of control, less overwhelmed by those feelings, and often has the very appealing effect of reducing the upset. When your child has felt “heard” and even validated, it will be much easier to get them to ‘hear’ you and your perspective.

Important note: saying “I can tell that you feel mad that I am making you unload the dishwasher, and it makes perfect sense to me that you would really rather play than do chores” does NOT mean that my daughter can go back to playing and skip the chore. The limits/requests/expectations remain the same. All that’s different is that I am giving her permission to feel whatever she feels about those expectations. But, it’s an amazing, healthy, effective, loving difference. And, by the way, one of the long term payoffs is a much higher-quality relationship when your child is an adult.

Experiment with it if you are so inclined: see if you can find a place this week to give your child permission to feel their upset, angry, jealous, agitated, or anxious feelings. See what happens and how it feels to both you and your child. Good things can happen!

(*) I can’t find a citation for it, but I was taught once that the Talaris Institute studied this and found that responding in an emotionally responsive/healthy way just 30% of the time is enough to get the benefit. Yay for not needing to be perfect!
