A particularly warm welcome to our 28 new Foundation students, as well as the 7 new students (5 new families) who joined the MPS community this week. It is wonderful to have you all, and it looked like a smooth and happy start which is wonderful. I really enjoyed seeing our Year 6 students embracing their roles as buddies, both in activities planned by the teachers, and also in the yard and even before school started on Monday. It is so powerful to have Year 6s taking responsibility for the younger members of our school community. Holiday Maintenance and Teacher Professional Learning We have been busy again over the break with the construction of our new kitchen/Science area in the senior building now very close to completion. It will be very exciting to utilise this space which will be purpose built for cooking and Science classes with Mrs Ihlow and Mrs Foot. All of our teachers were very busy on the two days before students returned last week. We focussed on developing our teaching practice in the key learning areas of Literacy and Numeracy, which will continue throughout the year. Teachers were also using testing and reporting data from 2018 to design individualised teaching and learning plans for your children. We are aiming for optimal learning growth for EVERY child at MPS in 2019! Congratulations! I would like to extend a big congratulations to Mr Marquand and his wife who welcomed a very tall Ruby Jean Marquand into the world on January 11 th . A wonderful time in their lives welcoming their first-born child. Mr Marquand will be taking some well-deserved paternity leave spread out across the term to enjoy time with Ruby and help with as many nappies as possible! Mrs Foot will be filling in for him on these days. Attendance The start of the year is always a good time to re-state the importance of regular attendance at school. The aim across the year is for 95%+ attendance – with much research showing the detrimental effects of poor attendance on childrens learning and social skills. We understand that illness and unforeseen circumstances can arise on occasions, but we ask that parents and carers make every effort to try and achieve this milestone across the year. When your child/ren are, or will be absent, please call in and let Karen know to ensure we have accurate roll marking. Any child who is absent without an explanation, will have someone from the school call home by 11am on that day to check on the reasoning for the absence. This is DET policy. So I ask that we have students here every day and that when absent, you take the time to let us know. Fire notification Lastly, just a note around fire notification and procedures given last weeks close call for a number of our families. The school will always act under the advice of the Department and also the CFA/Vic Emergency. We will attempt to keep families as informed as possible and this will be done via the FLEXIBUZZ app. So if you dont already have this on your phones and are signed into the school/classes please do so ASAP. We will continue to practise Fire Safety and emergency procedures with staff and students to ensure we are as well-prepared as possible should we every be impacted as a school. Looking forward to the year ahead at MPS! Foundation students with their Year 6 buddies completing a get-to-know-youactivity on Monday

WELCOME NIGHT — FOUNDATION & NEW FAMILIES

Our school will be conducting a welcome night on Thursday February 28th. The night will

commence at 5pm and conclude at 6:30pm. The night gives everyone a chance to meet all parents,

students and staff in a relaxed, informal manner. Everyone is encouraged to BYO food and drinks.

The staff will be operating the BBQ and are only too happy to cook any food you might need

cooked, in an expertise manner. Our school will be supplying, bread, tomato sauce and napkins.

Games and activities will be organised by our dedicated staff (eg: basketball, cricket etc). Everyone is

invited and we hope you can attend.

FIRST AID REQUIREMENTS If your child requires medication, short and long term, parents/guardians will need to attend the front office to fill out and sign a consent request form. NO medications, including Panadol and Ventolin, are to be kept in student’s bags or the responsibility of the classroom teacher unless arrangements have been made with your child’s teacher - forms will still need to be obtained from the front office and filled out. All medications need to have an expiry date clearly marked. Once the expiry has exceeded the school will dispose of the medication and parents/guardians will need to replace it. A note will be sent home with your child when the expiry is nearing. If your child suffers from Asthma, an up to date asthma plan is required. As part of the policy for all Victorian Schools the Department of Education guidelines state that an asthma plan needs to be completed by a Medical Practitioner. Should you have concerns, please feel free to contact the school.

FUNDRAISING - FIRST MEETING - Monday 18th Feb (after assembly) Fundraising within our school is run by volunteering parents. We meet regularly (usually once a month for 1 hour). We are looking for new parents to join our com m ittee. Our first m eeting w ill be on Monday 18th February at 9:30am where we will set our calendar for the year. The more people on board the less for everyone to do.

WE NEED EXTRA HANDS and new ideas are always welcome

Jump on board and help our children!
